The early emergence of civilizations, the characteristics of civilizations, and examples of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World from: Ancient Greece, Rome, Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. All have been covered in class.

Reminder This is a project where students need to learn how to be concise. Students were reminded to be direct and explicit with their evidence. This is excellent practice for students moving on to IB who will use these skills in their English Oral Assessments (IOP & IOC) and French Oral assessments.

WRAP UP/REMINDERS: If time has run out after Day 2, a concluding discussion will be held the next class to identify some of the difficulties with the research and finding contributions that came from the same time period of that civilization. This assignment is just one step to a bigger assignment where students will be further exploring their three contributions to their civilization by creating a Digital Presentation.

Modification: There are no modifications to this lesson, it is an enrichment course. An adaptation was made for a hearing

impaired student where the Screen Cast Rewind Lesson was provided as a Script to follow along with the Rewind Lesson.

Evaluation: This is a formative assessment where students are building the foundations of research and collecting information as evidence to help support the driving question. Students will use their knowledge to then showcase their civilization as a Digital Presentation.

This lesson was a way for students to explore Ancient Civilizations we will not cover in class but share common threads with the civilizations we will be studying for the duration of the semester. While the driving question has students identify the factors that make their civilization the most significant, the material we will cover on the civilizations of Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and Rome will highlight their major contributions and will be used in future assignments for points of comparison and referencing with the civilizations that students researched in class. What I enjoyed most about the two day lesson was students’ exploration of civilizations we will not have an opportunity to cover within our 4 units. Students took the activity seriously and were engaged throughout each step in the workshop model. Most common questions were: “What if my 3 contributions are not from the same time period as the other contributions from my group members?” In which I stepped in and had a discussion with the group on ways to approach finding contributions and where the significance of time period plays. The big idea students learned was that some civilizations went through important time periods of innovation and change and that identifying the time period is relevant in determining its growth and progress or if it underwent a systems collapse/or invasion and a new civilization emerged. In this instance students then make the major connections as to why these major civilizations ended, largely due to a systems collapse or invasion and that they should make those connections when identifying their contributions if need be. Students also found the rewind lesson valuable in reiterating the purpose of the assignment and where to focus their research however, many still preferred to have me discuss the purpose during our library time. As well another problem students encountered with the Screen Cast was that the link failed on the second day, so there was no longer access to the rewind lesson. We all had a great time setting up and using Padlet for the first time together (semester 2 new classes and a lot of storm days). Students were focused and serious about the information they published and shared with the class. Students were so engaged and serious that I had to remind them several times that we did not need to hear the details about the contribution (this will be elaborated on in their Mind Map assignment) but they did need to make the major connection on how it helped the civilization to advance. I also had the opportunity to teach this twice and while the results were the same, the process ran a little differently. Most group members were ready to participate however, in the second group; some used the Padlet wall as a way to type funny statements unrelated to the task. We did not use the full version of Padlet so posts were made anonymously. These posts were quickly removed. (As a side not, this Padlet group were also collaborating and posting on the day we had IB Test Run at our school for the Grade 9 students. We were constantly disrupted and some posts were directed towards the grade 9s joining Pre IB in September. It was all for fun and very good natured however, highly disruptive, so we did not experience the same flow and level of discussion that I had with the other Pre IB group.)

While the Padlet activity is a “collaborate and share” piece on Blooms Taxonomy, I also identified it as a “create and publish” piece because the board is “being designed” as a comprehensive piece to compare similarities of contributions between the civilizations. This Padlet wall will be used as a point of reference for the duration of the course as we explore the four civilizations and their similarities in contributions to other ancient civilizations from the different continents and time periods. The final step to the “create and publish” piece will be when students design a Digital Presentation of their 912 contributions to their Ancient Civilization. Why is your civilization the most significant in the Ancient World?

Demonstrate an understanding of the different regions of the ancient world and be able to explain their various contributions. Evaluate historic events and human accomplishments of the ancient civilizations. Develop an awareness of the fundamental needs of people to form groups and establish structures which validate and nurture civilizations. Part I: Research and discussion For this assignment you will be assigned one of the following civilizations to explore:

● Ancient China ● Ancient Japan ● Maya ● Inca ● Aztec ● Ancient India ● Persia (until 500 CE)

Your job is to research the accomplishments of your civilization and produce a poster that highlights the information you have researched. Only 34 people will study each civilization. Start by using your textbook as a resource. You will also be able to use the laptops and library resources. In the library, you can access useful databases including ABCCLIO and Encyclopaedia Britannica.

The time spent in the library should also include discussions with your group members on selecting the best contributions. Once you and your group members have finalized your 9 or 12 contributions list make sure that these contributions are coming from the same time in History and not a thousand years apart. You and your group will be presenting your contributions to the class using Padlet. Make sure to identify the contribution, the time period and how it helped to advance the society for the better. Ancient Civilizations Assignment – Part II The Ultimate Ancient Civilization

Now that you have had several classes to research your civilization, you should have a solid understanding of what your civilization contributed that makes it interesting and significant. You will be placed back into your group for the next part of the assignment. Presentation: You will be given time in class to develop a presentation about your civilization. The purpose of your presentation is to argue that your civilization should be recognized as the most significant in the ancient world. Your presentation must include the following:

● Introduction: overview (location, timeframe, “snapshot” of the civilization) ● Evidence: contributions made by your civilization in as many fields as

possible and explanation. Consider the following as you prepare your Digital Presentation:

▪ Time period(s) ▪ How did the contribution work (what it did)? ▪ What did your civilization gain (how it advanced)? ▪ Is the contribution still being used in today’s society? How

does it continue to benefit humanity? ● Conclusion: general summary of evidence presented that supports your

group’s thesis

Contributions can include physical structures that would help better society to make day to day tasks easier or these contributions can also relate to leisure time, education, science, writing, literature, law and spirituality, all in which display the affluence of a civilization.

When assigned your civilization, consider the time period as an important factor. Each civilization may have had periods of remarkable advancements deemed “Golden Age” and may indicate that there were many advancements during this time period.

Once you and your group members have finalized your 9 or 12 contributions list make sure that these contributions are coming from the same time in History and not a thousand years apart. This is particularly important because you need to understand and acknowledge these periods as they may not intertwine.

For example in Ancient Greece there are the following periods: Minoan, Mycenaean, the Dorian, Early Bronze Age, Classical, Hellenistic. All of these periods had a number of contributions in the advancement of their society. So you would need to pick one.
