Chapter 2 notes2.1 Elements

A little vocabChemical symbol international symbol for each element consisting of one or two lettersPhysical properties characteristics like state and colourChemical properties a substances ability to react chemically with other substances to form new products (reactivity)Metals usually hard, shiny, malleable, ductile and good conductors of heat and electricityNon-metals usually gasses or brittle solids at room temperature

Hydrogen (H)Colourless, odourless, tasteless and highly flammable gasHighly reactive and lighter than air

iron (Fe)- Very strong metal and ductile but can rust when exposed to water and oxygen

Oxygen (O)Non-metal gas that reacts with most other elements

Sodium (na)Shiny soft metal that is highly reactive in water and air

Chlorine (cl)Pale, yellow-green gas that is deadly and highly reactive

Mercury (hg)A liquid metal that is poisonous and carcinogenic

Silver (ag)White metallic element that can be polished, moulded, stretched, and is malleable and ductileAlso reflective and has great thermal conductivity

Silicon (si)Brittle, grey and has a metallic lustre although it is not a metalUsed as a semi-conductor
