Have you ever seen firsthand the sheer might and strength of an army 100,000 soldiers strong as they show their muscle against an inferior group? There is a sense of awe that can be felt as authority is wielded. The firepower at their disposal has the ability to completely change the face of a village, city, or nation. The capability of the person who adds fasting & prayer to their spiritual arsenal is equally as full of firepower. This comparison truly is not an overstatement. There is tremendous, and for the most part thoroughly neglected, spiritual might and authority that is added to the life of the believer that pays the price in fasting and prayer. This spiritual power is within our reach if we will but choose to walk in it. Most of us, however, have not been taught much about fasting in our churches and fellowships. It is seen as something that only the most fanatical of Christians do. Instead it is for the most common and lowly of us as followers of Jesus.

Take the computer age that we live in and the progress it has made in such a short amount of time. In about 20 years our society has progressed, due to the influx of computers and their abilities, in ways we never could have dreamt of in the 1970’s. Is there a spiritual counterpart that accelerates spiritual progress just as quickly? As with many spiritual truths that are available for every believer to take hold of, this one is not blatant but can be acquired by those who diligently search the Word of God and seek His face for revelation and understanding. The Scriptures and history bears witness that fasting and prayer is such a counterpart. Franklin Hall says, “It is prayer that is paved under the influence of fasting. Our spiritual progress will be like supersonic speed.” Hall goes on to say, “A 21 or 40 day fast will most assuredly hasten the Christian to such a deep and wonderful experience with God that 21 or 40 days can equal 21 or 40 years in spiritual progress.” Fasting seems to restore and amplify the power of prayer. Many believers today are not seeing their prayers answered. They are not seeing loved ones saved, their friends lives changed, or certain needs met and as a result end up living with a measure of unbelief and doubt regarding the power of prayer. We are sometimes given watered-down reasons for why prayer isn’t answered by those in spiritual authority. But could it be that a main reason behind this is due to a failure to follow Jesus’ complete formula. Fasting is mentioned one-third as much as prayer in the Bible, yet thought insignificant and unnecessary in relation to it by most today. Have you ever considered the increase of influence and focus that Islam is having these days? Could any of it be connected with the reality of the spiritual power unleashed as a result of

Page 3: 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting Guide

their commitment to the discipline of fasting during Ramadan and at other times? Spiritual power is spiritual power, whether it’s used for God or the enemy. Muslims have seemingly touched onto something huge that they are probably not even aware of. The enemy knows, more than most believers, the power wielded through fasting and prayer.

Generally when the Bible talks about fasting, it is referring to the abstaining from food, certain foods or meals, and even at times water (though this was only done rarely and for short periods of time). Fasting is one of the great foundation pillars of the Christian faith. It was a vital part of the practice of the early church and the great results that accompanied it were evidently seen and indisputable in those days. The apostle Paul lived a fasted lifestyle, in fact 2 Corinthians 11:27, which is a verse in the midst of his litany of experiences for the gospel’s sake, reads, “…In weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.” It wasn’t enough for him to communicate that he merely fasted, but that he did so often. Jesus fasted (Matthew 4:2). In fact His ministry did not commence until two occurrences took place. The first was His baptism by John and the Holy Spirit descending upon Him, and the second was His 40 days in the wilderness where He fasted and was tempted by the devil. No miracle or healing had taken place until after both of these events

happened. The first revealed His divinity and chosen Sonship by the Father, and the second revealed how as a common human being spiritual power can be unveiled. In the Old Testament we see that Moses fasted (Exodus 34:28). It was when he went up on the mountain to receive the 10 Commandments that he “…was there with the Lord for forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water…” The next verse describes his physical condition as he descends the mountain as having a face shining with the glory of God. In Joel 2:15 we are given a challenge that was completely normal for the Israelite community to receive. “Blow the trumpet in Zion. Consecrate a fast. Call a sacred assembly.” The Lord was communicating a lot in the whole of chapter 2, but specifically was highlighting the place and priority of the discipline of fasting, specifically in the days nearing when the Lord returns. To see our campuses impacted with a spirit of revival, to see our fellowships consumed with wholeheartedness toward Jesus, to see our churches living as if they really believed the Bible, to see people from every people group given the opportunity to respond to Jesus’ unconditional acceptance and love, we must embrace what these Biblical examples understood and lived by…the reality of God’s call to fasting and prayer. When Jesus was questioned by the disciples of John about why His disciples didn’t fast, His response speaks directly to us, “Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the

Page 4: 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting Guide

bridegroom will be taken away from them and then they will fast.” (Matthew 9:15) For whatever reason the twelve disciples were not issued the call to fasting, but Jesus clearly hints that once He was crucified and resurrected, He expected His followers to fast. When James in James 5:16-18 is seeking to use an example to embody the spiritual truth that the “…effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much,” he chose Elijah, a man intimately committed to the discipline of fasting. The list can go on and on. Anna the prophetess, King David, Daniel, and John the Baptist all fasted regularly and their lives and ministry demonstrated a spiritual authority that cannot be denied. King David recognized the importance of offering to God that which cost him something. In 2 Samuel 24:18-25 we find the story of David being offered a free piece of land by a commoner in Israel to build an altar. David rejects the free gift saying that he will pay for it stating as a reason, “Nor will I offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God with that which costs me nothing.” He had a right understanding concerning staying away from a spirituality that was easy and didn’t cost much. To him this was not worship at all. We can relate this to fasting. It is difficult, often painful, and yet if done with the right spirit, can revolutionize your spiritual life. Historically we see that Martin Luther fasted regularly. In fact while he was translating the Bible, he fasted from food. The great faith that he has become known for possessing was largely the result of encountering God, which often came through fasting and prayer. John Wesley was a man who

fasted regularly and whose prayer life took on dramatic happenings as a result.

One primary misunderstanding regarding fasting surrounds Jesus’ fast. Some might say that His 40 day fast was supernatural and that no human being can do such a thing. After His fast, the scripture says that “He hungered.” (Mathew 4:2) If it had been a supernaturally aided fast, why would He have hungered? As with Jesus’ entire life and ministry, He lived not from His divinity, but from His humanity. Had it been any different, His credibility to invite us to do seemingly impossible things would be shattered. Instead, He can call us with confidence declaring that He has led and shown the way through His own life lived in His complete humanity. Thus we can fast as He did. In fact, I have known literally countless people who have gone on 40 day fasts where they abstained entirely from food. They are regular people, like you and me. Along this line, there is a misunderstanding that food is absolutely necessary or we die. This is true overall, but our bodies can go a lot longer without food than most of us think. The first necessity in life is air, not food. Food is not even the second most necessity, it is water. And guess what, food doesn’t even come in third place as a physical necessity, but sleep does. Food is the fourth most important physical necessity of life.

Fasting has actually been proven to be quite a healthy practice. Our bodies do not need, and are actually negatively over-stimulated, by the amount of food intake we have on average. When we deny ourselves a meal or a certain type of food (meats), a full day’s worth of food, or many days of food, our bodies are cleansed and flushed of many of the unhealthy toxins we build up. This is a good thing for us. It is true that you will feel much weaker as a result of a partial fast. The first few days are always the most trying. Initially it will require much effort and focus to continue the fast. Once you get through day 3 or 4, it begins to get easier. Your body begins to adjust and it requires less effort to fast. Praying during the first few days will prove a chore as well, but as you get to day 3 and 4 and beyond, as you settle down into devoted prayer, you will begin to sense a deeper communion and intimacy with Jesus and your prayers will take on a greater dimension of power.

The benefits of fasting are quite extensive and the Scripture points to numerous results of the person who fasts. Here are a few of them:

Delighting ourselves in the Lord (Psalm 37:4) An increase of spiritual fervor and zeal Answered prayer – Ezra 8:23 Increase of spiritual fruit Increase of faith and belief Increase of miracles in our midst

A greater sensitivity to the things of God – Jeremiah 29:13,14

A greater revelation of the scriptures – Daniel 9:2,3,21,22

Aids us in overcoming temptations and trials Prepares us to meet and defeat the attacks of the

enemy – Jeremiah 29:10-13 It switches our basic disposition from a natural focus

to an elevated spiritual focus Can increase our humility before God and others –

Psalm 39:10

The kind of fast you choose should be based on the leading of the Holy Spirit and your particular circumstances. You are heavily encouraged to participate in what is commonly known as a “Daniel” or a partial fast. The focus here is not on a complete abstaining from all food, but on the restriction of one’s diet. Generally this highlights a fast from meat and seeks to focus instead on fruits and vegetables. Another form of the partial fast might include omitting a particular meal each day, thus limiting the quantity of food consumed. The beginning of a fast is always the toughest. Our bodies are used to a certain amount of food intake and when we change that intake, it responds. The process of a fast can be broken into 4 stages. Stage 1 is the starting portion of the fast and requires 100 % effort and will power to get started. You feel hungry often,

Page 6: 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting Guide

your mouth might dry out, you have little energy, and you might get headaches. Your body is cleaning out the toxins in your system and these can be the results. Once you get beyond the third or fourth day, hunger actually will subside and eventually leave. The headaches will also cease. This is where the fast moves into Stage 2. This stage is much easier to continue with as you actually gain a bit of strength after having lost much of it (don’t go and workout or anything, however). It takes about 30% effort and self-will to continue with the fast at this stage. Stage 3 moves you into more strength as the weakness continues to leave your body even though you are not necessarily putting a ton of food back in. The fast can actually become routine in this stage. Then Stage 4 highlights the breaking of the fast. This is an important part. Many people say it takes about as much effort (100%) to break it as it does to begin it. Our appetites for food will need to be overcome and overruled during the fast. This is only done through self will and from the assistance of the Lord. Do not think that the Lord will simply take away a desire for food. He will give strength, but we must make an active choice to fast and to remain committed to the fast. If you fail early on, give yourself grace, commit yourself again and continue on with the fast. Often it takes 2 or 3 starts to keep on a fast. The key is getting through those first few days that prove extremely difficult and coming to the place where you’ve fasted long enough for hunger to start to leave. The body craves food at stated and regular times, but the mind also becomes on edge

and reminds the body of the time for a meal. It’s both a physical and mental battle. You will find that your mind constantly tries to think of food (imagine that). This can be overcome through distracting yourself and by entering into a spirit of prayer as often as possible. It is imperative that you drink lots of water and other liquids during the fast. Hydration is very important to maintaining health. Each time a regular meal time comes around deliberately drink a glass or two of water and distract yourself in some purposeful activity. * Much of this writing has been adapted from Franklin Hall’s article “Atomic Power With God Through Prayer and Fasting”.

Our goal during this season of 21 days of prayer and fasting is to stimulate momentum within the global student mission movement that God is raising up. We want to devote ourselves to intercession focused on the emerging generation of believers around the earth and the subsequent release of vision, passion, and commitment upon them to do whatever it takes to see the gospel planted globally in our lifetime. We are asking God corporately that 2006 will be a pivotal marker year for momentum in the building of the global student mission movement. Fasting during this season will begin to increase your sensitivities to the heart of God in this realm, it will give you a greater illumination of the Scriptures resulting in the ability to use them effectively in prayer and intercession (the sword

of the spirit), and it will unveil a greater faith to believe God to do things in the student mission movement you thought otherwise impossible. In the same spirit as those five college students two hundred years ago who prayed under a haystack for their peers to catch God’s heartbeat for the nations, may we commit ourselves, with abandoned devotion to these days of prayer and fasting, asking God to do exceedingly and abundantly beyond all that we could ever ask or think (Ephesians 3:20) on our campuses, in our churches and in the corporate student mission movement during this year, 2006.

During these 21 Days, this daily guide will provide you with Scriptures to pray and prayer points related to the global student mission movement. Commit yourself to gather together daily with a small group of your friends and pray together concerning the prayer items in this guide. This will provide encouragement and accountability when the going gets tough. If you cannot do this, then tell a friend that you are fasting and will commit to a certain amount of time daily to pray. Encourage that friend to periodically hold you accountable to this daily time commitment. Each prayer point is to be seen as a launching point for prayer. There have deliberately been only a few given. You are encouraged to spend time going as deep as possible about that particular point, allowing the Holy Spirit to lead you with what to pray regarding each point as you wait upon

Him. Ask Him to show you what is on His heart regarding that particular prayer point. Then wait upon Him to speak to you and trust that He will lead you. Pray the following overarching prayer every day, multiple times a day. It is an easily memorized, easily recited prayer that prayed often and with heartfelt faith could revolutionize the student mission world. “Oh Father…Lord of the Harvest, raise up 100,000 new

message bearers who are zealous for Your name, full of humility and of the power of the Holy Spirit, and bring

forth a mighty harvest of 10 million souls from the hardest places around the world for your glory.”

Let us know that you are embarking on this season of prayer and fasting by clicking the following link and following the easy steps http://www.svm2.citymaker.com/page/page/2718333.htm May I encourage you to journal during your fast. I have found this practice to be indispensable. When the Lord is teaching me something from the Scriptures or I sense the Lord is speaking to me, I will write it down and keep a record of it. As a result I have multitudes of journals from the last 10 years that detail my spiritual history with God. Often we quickly forget what God has done or promised to do. But in this manner we can continually remind ourselves of lessons He has taught and experiences we have had with God. Guide Breakdown

Each day is broken into 2 broad categories:

1. Scriptures to pray to prepare our hearts before the Lord

2. Prayer points regarding the student mission

movement. You are encouraged to pray the Scriptures that have been provided in the following categories:

1) Praise 2) Confession 3) Petition

Each of these Scriptural prayers is vital to prepare your heart to enter into intercession. The Scriptures have been changed slightly to make them into an actual prayer format. Meditate upon each Scripture as you pray through them. Ask the Holy Spirit, who is the teacher of all truth (John 16:13) to open your eyes, to a greater degree, to grasp the deep implications of each Scriptural prayer. *These Scriptural prayers have been taken from Ken Boa’s book, Face to Face: Praying the Scriptures for Intimate Worship, by Zondervan Publishing, 1997, available through Amazon.com or Fetchbook.info or you local bookseller. Next are highlighted the prayer points for the day. These will be broken down under the following sub-categories under the broad category of prayer for the emerging generation and its involvement in reaching the nations for Christ in our lifetime:

1) The Prayer Movement for the Nations 2) The Message Bearer* Movement 3) Breaking Up Fallow Ground

Under each of these sub-categories there are two prayer points. Pray into these points asking the Lord to lead and guide you to know what to pray regarding each. *The term Message Bearer is an alternative, more relevant term for missionary among the emerging generation.. He/she is a person who commits themselves to abandoned devotion to Jesus, personal involvement in the global proclamation of the gospel, and spreading the vision of the student mission movement among their peers while still in college.

A. PRAISE:

We confess that in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with You, O God, and the Word was You. The Word was in the beginning with You. (John 1:1-2) You are but one God, the Father from whom all things came and for whom I live; and there is but one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom I live. (1 Corinthians 8:6) I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify Your name forever. For great is Your love toward me, and you have delivered my soul from the depths of the grave. (Psalm 86:12-13) B. CONFESSION: Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23-24) Save me from bloodguilt, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. For you do not desire sacrifice, or I would bring it; You do not delight in burnt offerings. The sacrifices You desire are a

broken spirit; a broken spirit and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. (Psalm 51:14-17) C. PETITION: May I consider the members of my earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desires, and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, O God, Your wrath is coming. I used to walk in these ways, in the life I once lived. (Colossians 3:5-7) May I be strong and courageous and careful to obey Your Word; may I not turn from it to the right or to the left, that I may act wisely wherever I go. (Joshua 1:7)

A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Ask God to open wide the spiritual eyes of those who are involved in small groups of intercession for the nations on campuses. Pray over them that revelation from the Holy Spirit of how to pray for global circumstances would consume them.

Ask God to raise up 50,000 small groups in the

global emerging generation who are meeting and praying on campuses and in churches with a single-minded focus and purpose for God’s glory to be revealed and the nations reached for Christ.

Page 10: 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting Guide

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Ask God to break the hearts of the emerging generation with His own for the nations. Pray for a true compassion for the lost around the world to be birthed in every heart by the Holy Spirit.

Ask God for big vision to consume the emerging

generation related to reaching the world for Christ. May we move away from our small vision and small spiritual ambitions. Pray that this vision would grip and enflame hearts and motivate for personally working among the unreached.

C. BREAKING UP FALLOW GROUND

Pray for the Sundanese Indonesians, a Muslim people group numbering about 35 million who live primarily on the island of Java. They practice folk Islam, reciting the Koran for good luck and seek out witchdoctors to help them know what to do. Pray for a breaking in of the kingdom of God in their midst.

Ask God to use whatever means necessary in 2006 to

open the way for the gospel of the kingdom to be lived and declared with power in the unreached areas of the most populous Muslim nation in the world, Indonesia.

A. PRAISE:

I am unworthy of all the lovingkindness and faithfulness You have shown Your servant. (Genesis 32:10) You are the God who answered me in the day of my distress and have been with me wherever I have gone. (Genesis 35:3) God Almighty, You are the shepherd, the Rock of Israel, who helps me and blesses me with blessings from heaven above. (Genesis 49:24-25) B. CONFESSION: My trespasses are multiplied before You, and my sins testify against me. For my transgressions are with me, and I know my iniquities; transgressing and lying against You, O Lord, turning my back on You, Speaking oppression and revolt, uttering lies my heart has conceived. (Isaiah 59:12-13) We have sinned with our fathers; we have committed iniquity and have acted wickedly. (Psalm 106:6) C. PETITION:

Page 11: 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting Guide

O Lord, I pray, let Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant and to the prayer of Your servants who delight in revering Your name. (Nehemiah 1:11) Guard my soul and rescue me; let me not be ashamed, for I take refuge in You. May integrity and uprightness protect me, for I wait for You. (Psalm 25:20-21)

A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Pray for boldness to enter into the hearts of those who commit to seeking God regularly on behalf of the nations. Ask God for Spiritual boldness to come before the throne of God in Spirit-led intercession.

Ask God to show Himself strong during the “Year of

the Haystack” campaign throughout 2006. As a Haystack Night is being attempted at 120 Christian college campuses in the US and Canada, pray for God’s favor and intervention to be known with the logistics of setting each event up. Pray for His presence to prepare the ground of people’s hearts to respond by the droves with action.

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

God is on the move among the nations, preparing

them for harvest. Pray that the emerging generation might align themselves with Him in this pivotal hour,

hearing His whisper and still small voice motivating with vision to “GO.”

Ask the Lord to raise up humble servants for the

harvest. One of the greatest needs in the world is for servants who are full of true humility before those they go to serve among.

C. BREAKING UP FALLOW GROUND

Pray for the nation of the Unites Arab Emirates. Due to the oil in this country, it is vastly wealthy, housing one of the most lavish seven star hotels in the world. Pray for God’s conviction of sin that leads to repentance to replace the materialism that is rampant.

Pray for the emerging generation in the U.A.E. Ask

God to move with a sweeping revival among them, moving them from idleness and boredom to usefulness in His kingdom for the entire Arabian Peninsula region.

A. PRAISE: I will sing of Your mercies, Lord, forever; With my mouth I will make Your faithfulness known through all generations. I will declare that Your lovingkindness will be built up forever, that You will establish Your faithfulness in the heavens. And the heavens will praise Your wonders, O Lord, Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the Holy Ones. For who in the heavens can be compared with You? Who is like You among the children of the mighty? You are greatly feared in the council of the holy ones and more awesome than all who surround You. O Lord, God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty Lord? Your faithfulness also surrounds You. (Psalm 89: 1-2, 5-8) B. CONFESSION: You, O God, fashion the hearts of all and understand all their works. (Psalm 33:15) My Lord, let your power be great, just as you have spoken, saying, “The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression.” (Numbers 14:17-18) C. PETITION:

May my conscience testify that I have conducted myself in the world in the holiness and sincerity that are from You, not in fleshly wisdom but in Your grace, especially in my relationship with others. (2 Corinthians 1:12) May I not enter the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evil men. (Proverbs 4:14)

A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Ask God to fashion prayer warriors who will be vigilant, focused, and use spiritual force (Matthew 11:12) to see the in breaking of the kingdom of God in the hardest areas of the earth.

Pray for a unified prayer movement for the nations to

arise in non-western countries among the emerging generation that is fixated on seeing the gospel planted and the full implications of the kingdom of God in a locale being manifested. Ask God for tremendous fruit in the hardest nations of the world.

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Ask the Lord to break the back of the selfishness that plagues the emerging generation and human nature in general. Pray for believers to repent of this fundamental sin and embrace the life of selflessness, which only Jesus gives power to walk in.

Pray against the deception of safety and the converse

fear of danger globally today. God is calling His people to action and has promised to be with us no matter where we go or what circumstances surround us (Matthew 28:20). Pray that a selfish concern for personal safety would not undermine God’s call.

C. BREAKING UP FALLOW GROUND

Pray for the nation of Senegal. This nation of 10.5 million is highly Muslim, with the dominant people group being the Wolof. Evangelical believers are few and church planting has born little fruit. Pray against the spiritual darkness that hangs over the land and pray 2 Corinthians 4:4 over the Senegalese.

Pray for a spiritual breakthrough in Senegal today

that would create a spiritual beachhead for the gospel. Ask God to perform signs and wonders that will point the way to Jesus as the only King and Savior. Pray for the capital city of Dakar, where much of the population lives, to become a beacon of light spreading to the whole country.

A. PRAISE: All who are righteous rejoice in You, O Lord, and give thanks at the remembrance of Your holy name. (Psalm 97:12) How precious are your thoughts to me, Oh God! How vast is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand.” (Psalm 139:17-18) B. CONFESSION: You, Lord my God, are gracious and compassionate, and You will not turn Your face from me if I return to You. (2 Chronicles 30:9) A person’s wickedness will punish him; his backsliding will reprove him. I know, therefore, and see that it is evil and bitter to forsake You, the Lord my God, and have no fear of You. (Jeremiah 2:19) C. PETITION: My body is a temple of Your Holy Spirit, who is in me and whom I have received from You, Lord God. I am not my own, for I was bought at a price; therefore may I glorify You in my body. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

Lord, may I not be ashamed to testify about You, but join with others in suffering for the gospel according to Your power. (2 Timothy 1:8)

A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Ask God to forgive us of our prayerlessness. Confess your own lack of prayer and ask the Lord to have mercy upon you. Offer yourself to Him to be used as a prayer warrior. Ask Him to use you as a vessel that He can pray through to see His light shine upon the nations and commit yourself to this task, by His grace.

Ask the Lord for prophetic revelation in the prayer

movement for the nations (Proverbs 29:18). We need His help and must rely upon Him to know how to pray and to know what He is doing. (John 5:19) Ask Him to clearly reveal His plans to His praying people so that they can, in turn, pray them into being.

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Pray for God’s power to fall upon the emerging

generation. We need His power to do His work. Ask the Holy Spirit to empower His children with spiritual authority, healing authority, and signs and wonders as they go forth into the Harvest fields of the

earth. The world expects those who say they know God to walk in spiritual power.

Ask the Lord to forgive our generation for

complacency and to energize and activate us for His kingdom purposes. Ask Him to guard us against the subtle lies of our culture regarding spiritual complacency. May we be willing to stand out and even be mocked (sometimes by those who call themselves Christians) as we turn from complacency to faithfulness, obedience, and radical discipleship.

C. BREAKING UP FALLOW GROUND

Pray for the Aceh people group in Northern Indonesia on the island of Sumatra. As they endured the brunt of the Tsunami last December and were shaken to the core through it, pray for the Lord to reveal Himself to many in that region, unmasking the deception of Islam.

Pray for Message Bearers who are full of love,

cultural sensitivity, and understanding regarding Islam to live and teach the gospel of the Kingdom in a compelling way that will breed devoted response. Pray for God to specifically move on 300 Message Bearers to make it their lifes work to serve the Acehnese and to see the church established there.

A. PRAISE: I will arise and bless You, Lord my God; You are from everlasting to everlasting; blessing to Your glorious name, Which is exalted above all blessing and praise. (Nehemiah 9:5) O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like You in heaven above or on earth below; You keep Your covenant and mercy with Your servants who walk before You with all their heart. (1 Kings 8:23; 2 Chronicles 6:14) B. CONFESSION: To fear You, Lord, is to hate evil; wisdom hates pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth. (Proverbs 8:13) O Lord, be gracious to me; heal my soul, for I have sinned against You. (Psalm 41:4) C. PETITION: Let me hear Your unfailing love in the morning, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should walk, for to You I lift up my soul. (Psalm 143:8)

May I not be afraid of my adversaries, but remember You, the One who is great and awesome. (Nehemiah 4:14)

A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Ask God for a tenacious spirit to fall upon those who pray for the nations. That perseverance and determination would mark the emerging generation today as they gather in small groups to cry out for the nations. Pray that the distractions of our culture would have no power to dissuade these from seeking God in intercession.

Pray for intercessors to arise who are motivated in

prayer by possessing the lifestyle of a worshipper. May these learn of and grow in an understanding of the emotions of God and be utterly fascinated by Him. Devoted worshippers are the greatest spiritual warriors and are those who will remain faithful to the end.

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Ask the Lord to protect and cover the lives of Message Bearers. Pray for growth in the abiding lifestyle unto Jesus and to be clothed with His presence wherever they go. One of the Holy Spirit’s roles is to bring conviction of sin upon the world. As Message Bearers abide in Jesus, the Spirit will

convict others through their lives. Pray for this kind of power to be increased in the lives of Message Bearers, and for conviction of sin to fall upon those whom they interact with.

C. BREAKING UP FALLOW GROUND

Pray for the nation of Egypt. This was a historically Christian nation until 640AD, which now has a dominant Islamic population. Ask the Lord to re-dig the wells of true Christianity in this county and bring forth a revival of people turning to Him for salvation. Specifically, pray for 300,000 to be brought into the kingdom in the next 10 years throughout Egypt.May the standard of spiritual Truth be held high and uncompromised and many drawn to it.

Pray for strategic ways to communicate the gospel

message in Egypt through culturally relevant ways as persecution against believer has risen in the last 10 years. Pray Acts 4:27-31 over Message Bearers in Egypt.

A. PRAISE: Lord Jesus, You are the door; whoever enters through You will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy; You have come that we may have life and have it abundantly. (John 10:9-10) Out of the north You come in golden splendor; with You is awesome majesty. You, the Almighty, are beyond our reach; You are exalted in power; and in Your justice and great righteousness, You do not oppress. (Job 37:22-23) B. CONFESSION: You, O God, will not always strive with us, nor will You harbor Your anger forever; You do not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is Your love for those who fear You; as far as the east is from the west, so far have You removed our transgression from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so You have compassion on those who fear You. (Psalm 103:9-13) C. PETITION:

May I follow Your commands and precepts and be careful to observe them, for this is my wisdom and understanding in the sight of others. (Deuteronomy 4:5-6) In You, O Lord, I have taken refuge; let me never be ashamed; deliver me in Your righteousness. Since You are my rock and fortress, for Your name’s sake lead me and guide me. Into Your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, O Lord God of truth. (Psalm 31:1,3,5)

A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Pray that the emerging generation would grasp the depths of the reality and the power of persevering prayer. Pray for a thorough internal understanding of the authority given to us through prayer. Ask God to forgive us for not using this spiritual weapon as we ought. Pray that believers would wield it with great power and effectiveness.

Ask the Lord for grace, strength and power to

overcome the subtle spirit of unbelief that so many of us carry with us. Ask God to help us take Jesus’ words in Matthew 7:7-12 to heart and ask, being led by the Spirit, with full expectation and anticipation of receiving.

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Pray for a deep and awesome heart belief in Jesus to

prevail among Message Bearers, not just intellectual assent. Pray, as a result, John 7:38 over them, “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of His heart will flow rivers of living water.” This is God’s promise for those who “believe” in Him with their hearts, not just their minds. May our lives flow with Living Water.

Pray against a spirit of greed and materialism in the

emerging generation which has grounded many would-be Message Bearers from global ministry. We are so easily distracted and satisfied with our material things. Ask God to deliver and set free many from this bondage and make us willing to give everything up and follow His leading and call upon our lives.

C. BREAKING UP FALLOW GROUND

With nearly 25 million people, North Korea is one of the hardest countries in the world to establish the gospel. It is one of the highest on the global persecution index with desperate poverty and serious needs. Pray for the Lord to move on the heart of the President to open his country up to outside help.

Pray for God’s power to break down the resistance of

the people who have been taught that all foreigners are bad. Pray Matthew 10:16 and ask the Holy Spirit to make a way for Message Bearers to get into this land by being “Wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”

A. PRAISE: You, Father, love me because I have loved Jesus and have believed that He came forth from You. (John 16:27) Lord Jesus, You are the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To anyone who is thirsty, You will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who overcome will inherit all this, and You will be their God and they will be Your children. (Revelation 21:6-7) B. CONFESSION: Those whom You love, You rebuke and discipline. Therefore may I be zealous and repent. (Revelation 3:19) I return to You, Lord my God, for I have stumbled because of my iniquity. I take words with me and return to You, saying, “Take away all iniquity and receive me graciously, that I may offer the fruit of my lips.” (Hosea 14:1-2) C. PETITION: I was once darkness, but now I am light in You, Lord. May I walk as a child of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), learning what is pleasing to You. (Ephesians 5:8-10)

Just as I received You as Lord, Christ Jesus, so let me walk in You, being rooted and built up in You, and established in the faith as I was taught, and abounding in thanksgiving. (Colossians 2:6-7)

A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Pray for a burning love to abound more and more among those crying out to God on behalf of the nations. May passionate love for Jesus and enormous compassion for the lost consume those who stand in the gap as intercessor.

Pray that the Lord would teach us to not be anxious

about anything, but to pursue Him with a relentless commitment in prayer (praying without ceasing). (Philippians 4:6) As we do, we will experience the deep peace which He promises.

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Pray for the teaching on denying self and surrendering our hopes, dreams, and futures fully to the Lordship of Jesus to be raised to the forefront in ministries among the emerging generation today. Ask God to prepare the hearts of the hearers of this

Page 19: 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting Guide

message to receive and respond obediently to it immediately.

Pray against the idols among the emerging generation

of addiction to entertainment, obsession with sports, worldly fashion, fleshly indulgence, and secular academics. These five have brought havoc in our midst and currently have a strangle hold on many believers in the emerging generation, dulling many from the ability to discern anything spiritually, and robbing multitudes from responding to the call to be a Message Bearer. Pray for these lies to be crushed and for freedom to follow hard after God to ensue.

C. BREAKING UP FALLOW GROUND

Pray for the Maldives Islands just off the tip of India. This string of beautiful islands has been a stronghold of Islam for centuries. Pray for the enemy’s power to be broken enough to allow Message Bearers to creatively enter this little nation and strategically develop platforms to practically serve the people.

Pray for the establishment and sustainability of

numerous house churches throughout the islands, at least one on each inhabited island in the string of close to 1,000 islands.

A. PRAISE: You are the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy. You live in a high and Holy place but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit. You revive the spirit of the lowly and the hearts of the contrite. (Isaiah 57:15) You formed my inward parts; You wove me together in my mother’s womb. I thank You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful and my soul knows it full well. (Psalm 139: 13-15) B. CONFESSION: O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your wrath, and do not chasten me in Your anger. For Your arrows have pierced me deeply, and Your hand has pressed down upon me. There is no health in my body because of Your wrath – no peace in my bones because of my sin. For my iniquities have gone over my head; as a heavy burden, they weigh too much for me. May I be worthy of respect, not double-tongued, not addicted to wine, not fond of dishonest gain, but holding the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. (1 Timothy 3:8-9) May I put away all these things: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from my mouth. (Colossians 3:8)

A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Pray for an increase of faith to take God at His word. Ask the Holy Spirit to do whatever it takes in the lives of your friends, campuses, churches and ministries to increase a deep and breathing faith, and to cultivate a trust and dependence upon God and His Word.

Ask God to build up confidence in His people of His

tremendous power as a result of them being used by His hand to partner with Him as they pray into being the things that He wants to accomplish.

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Pray for a spirit of repentance and conviction to fall upon Message Bearers, that they would be committed to holiness as spotless vessels and mediators of His glory among the nations.

Pray against a spirit of worry, anxiety, or fret among Message Bearers which is common. Ask God to unleash His powerful peace which eases our hearts and builds confidence to trust Him in all circumstances, especially in the midst of difficulty, hardship, and pain.

C. BREAKING UP FALLOW GROUND

Pray for the city of Istanbul in Turkey. With over 15 million living in this city, it is truly a crossroads of east and west. Pray that it would be a spiritual center for the launching of the gospel into many areas of the region. Pray for spiritual fruit among the Turks, which has been slow in coming, that would multiply and affect the whole area.

Turkey is a very secular country. Pray that people’s

disillusionment with Islam would result in many opening themselves to new life in Jesus and affecting others with this life transformation.

A. PRAISE: How great are You, O sovereign Lord! There is no one like You, and there is no God besides You, according to all that I have heard with my ears. (2 Samuel 7:22, 1 Chronicles 17:20) You alone are the Lord. You made the heavens, the heaven of heavens, and all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to all that is in them, and the host of heaven worships You. (Nehemiah 9:6) B. CONFESSION: Lord, may I learn the importance of forgiveness from Jesus, who was asked by Peter; “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I tell you, not seven times, but up to seventy times seven.” (Matthew 18:21-22) C. PETITION: Guard my soul and rescue me: let me not be ashamed, for I take refuge in You. May integrity and uprightness protect me, for I wait for You. (Psalm 25:20-21)

Lord, help me to be careful and watch myself closely, lest I forget the things my eyes have seen or let them depart from my heart as long as I live. May I teach them to my children and to their children after them. (Deuteronomy 4:9)

A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Ask God to affect the motives of those who stand in prayer for the nations and for the emerging generation to reach them in our lifetime. May their motives never be selfish or stem from any base part of the sinful nature, but always focused on the centrality of bringing the most glory to Jesus Christ.

Ask God to use those praying to focus their prayer on

the will of God being unleashed. Pray for Him to use those who pray to bring breakthrough of the will of God into varying circumstances. Ask God to increase the commitment among global prayer teams to pray for the will of God to prevail.

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Pray for theological misrepresentations to be overcome which have caused some to believe that God will draw those whom He has predestined to Him all by Himself, without our involvement. Pray for the emerging generation to be taught a right understanding of God’s will and our necessary

Page 22: 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting Guide

involvement in partnering with Him to reach the world.

Pray for protection from the subtle heresy of

universalism that is growing in the hearts of many believers. Pray that the emerging generation would clearly understand and believe the full implications of the gospel message, including its exclusivity.

C. BREAKING UP FALLOW GROUND

Pray for the country of Vietnam. Still affected by persecution, specifically in the mountain country, it has been very difficult to see much fruit here. Ask God to finally break the back completely of communism in Vietnam, resulting in true religious freedoms for its peoples.

Pray for much more literature distribution in

Vietnam. There is a great need for the Scriptures to get out into the peoples hands. Much good Bible translation work has taken place and now the product needs to be better distributed to those hungry and desperate for it.

A. PRAISE: The heavens shout for joy! The earth rejoices! The mountains break out into singing! For You have comforted Your people and will have compassion on Your afflicted ones. (Isaiah 49:13) I will greatly rejoice in You, O Lord; my soul will be joyful in You, my God. For You have clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. (Isaiah 61:10) B. CONFESSION: Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for You are the One I praise. (Jeremiah 17:14) For You, the Lord God, have said, “I, even I, am He who blots out Your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember Your sins.” (Isaiah 43:25) C. PETITION: May I not say, “Today or tomorrow I will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business, and make a profit.” For I do not even know what my life will be

Page 23: 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting Guide

tomorrow. I am a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, let me say, “If the Lord wills, I will live and do this or that.” Otherwise I boast in my arrogance, and all such boasting is evil. (James 3:13-16)

A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Ask the Lord for a burning vision for prayer and intercession to arise among the emerging generation. Pray that it might rival and be greater then the student mission movements of the past where small groups by the hundreds met for prayer focused on the nations on campuses.

Pray that the “turf” mentality might be torn down on

campuses between campus ministries for the sake of seeing a united prayer vision for the campus, city, nations, and the unreached developed, nurtured, and achieved.

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Pray for the endurance of those who are serving around the world at this moment. Pray that God would grant them supernatural grace and that they would maintain spiritual glad-heartedness and a grateful and thankful outlook in all they do.

One primary hindrance to people embracing the call to the nations is a feeling of unworthiness and inadequacy. Pray that this lying accusation of the enemy would be revealed for exactly what it is. Pray for a receiving of the breadth of the grace of God and a sense of adequacy, not in who we are, but in Whose we are.

C. BREAKING UP FALLOW GROUND

Pray for children at risk around the earth today. The numbers are staggering of those who today suffer in brutal poverty or are orphaned and unloved. Pray for workers to go, live among these precious ones, and plant churches among children at risk around the world.

Pray for children who are forced into violent warfare,

forced into prostitution, and countless other exploitative roles. Pray for physical and spiritual freedom and ask God to burden and raise up those who will fight on their behalf for justice.

A. PRAISE: For those who revere Your name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And they will go out and leap like calves released from the stall. (Malachi 4:2) Lord Jesus, we rejoice that You fulfilled the words of the prophet Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim freedom to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to s et free those who are downtrodden, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” (Luke 4:18-19) B. CONFESSION: Your eyes are everywhere, O Lord, keeping watch on the evil and the good. (Proverbs 15:3) Who may ascend Your holy hill, O Lord? Who may stand in Your holy place? Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who have not lifted up their souls to idols or sworn by what is false. (Psalm 24:3-4) C. PETITION:

May I not take revenge, but leave room for Your wrath, O God. For You have said, “Vengeance is mine: I will repay.” May I not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Deuteronomy 32:35; Romans 12:19,21)

A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Pray for an attitude of preferring others to arise during prayer meetings. There is an art to cultivating prayer meetings (see Global Prayer Teams Guide available for download at SVM2.net). Pray for God’s people to urgently initiate small groups for weekly prayer and to take leadership of seeing them continue to meet throughout a semester or year.

Ask God for radical devotion to capture the hearts of

those who get involved in small groups of prayer for the nations. May they be people marked by a spirit of sacrifice; getting up early to seek His face, living a lifestyle of fasting, holding partial-night or all-night prayer watches, and much more.

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Pray for Message Bearers to epitomize a thankful heart for their trials and hardships and see them as an opportunity to grow and mature in becoming more like Jesus (James 1:2-5). Pray for these to be grateful for the people God has put around them, even the

Page 25: 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting Guide

people they might struggle with relationally, knowing that through embracing these with love and dying to self, they are growing in character and usefulness in the hands of the Father.

Pray that Message Bearers would behave wisely and

prudently, exercising discretion in order to make the most of every opportunity they have to share the gospel in a relevant manner for the hearer. (Colossians 4:5)

C. BREAKING UP FALLOW GROUND

Ask God for the planting of 100,000 house churches in the next 5 years in the 10/40 window. Pray for God’s power to be known and manifested, as believers gather together in homes and learn to follow Jesus.

Pray that the stereotype of Christianity in the Muslim

world might be done away and that truth would prevail, through the holy and blameless lives of Message Bearers, and the lies and misunderstandings minimized.

A. PRAISE: A great multitude, which no one could number, from all nations and tribes and peoples and languages will stand before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and will cry out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to You, our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” (Revelation 7:9-10) Blessed are You, Jesus, the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! (Luke 19:38) B. CONFESSION: You have been just in all that has happened to me, O God; You have acted faithfully, while I did wrong. (Nehemiah 9:33) When I sin against You, Lord, I can be sure that my sin will find me out. (Numbers 32:23) C. PETITION: Lord, may I learn the divine perspective Joseph learned when he said to his brothers, “Do not be grieved or angry with Yourselves for selling me here, for God sent me before

A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Pray for a new depth of desire and love to consume those who are seeking God for the nations. God’s feelings and emotions for those living in idolatry around the earth are strong and He longs to manifest those same desires in those who are His intercessors. Ask the Holy Spirit to excite His people with His deep desire, sparking a greater commitment to prevail in prayer for the nations and the lost.

Pray that those seeking God would pray “prophetic

declarations.” When the Scripture clearly states that some event or happening is to come, make it the grounds of a special prayer, trusting the Promise Keeper to bring it to fruition. Daniel understood, through studying the Scripture, that the Babylonian captivity would last seventy years and then set himself to pray to the Lord to bring this outcome to pass and God answered (Daniel 9:2). This is our model as intercessors.

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Pray for those considering involvement in global ministry, but are shying away because of the need to raise finances. Ask God to unveil a revelation to them of the joy and Scriptural backing of living by faith and depending upon God for sustenance. Jesus did it and countless others have done it. It is a blessing and spiritual joy and the emerging generation need a grasp of this wonderful calling.

God has ordained that the primary means of bringing

humanity to Himself is through the preaching of His Word and through the speaking of Truth. Yet, most of the body of Jesus Christ rarely witness of God’s goodness and character to the lost. Pray for the activation into evangelism of the emerging generation on a daily basis.

C. BREAKING UP FALLOW GROUND

Ask God for the nation of Turkmenistan as your inheritance (Psalms 2:8). The president has built a personality cult around himself in the likeness of Stalin and the Muslim caliphs of old. Ask God to bring him down for the purpose of opening the people to truth.

Hostility against believers has increased of late. It is

very difficult to be a foreigner in Turkmenistan. Pray for favor for Message Bearers to get visas and remain in the country long enough to see viable fruit brought forth.

(Lamentations 3:24-26) You, O Lord, are good, a refuge in times of trouble; You know those who trust in You. (Nahum 1:7) B. CONFESSION: You, the Lord our redeemer, have said, “For a brief moment I forsook you, but with great compassion I will gather you. In a flood of anger I hid my face from you for a moment, but I will have compassion on you with everlasting kindness. (Isaiah 54:7-8) C. PETITION: O God, be gracious to us and bless us, and make Your face shine upon us, that your way may be known on earth, Your salvation among all nations. A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Pray for a renewed depth of dependence upon the Holy Spirit in the prayer movement for the nations. Apart from the Spirit, who makes intercession for us and through us, nothing will be accomplished in prayer that is of any lasting worth.

Ask God for a greater degree of discernment

regarding what God wants to do, to grip His praying people. That we might become like the “Sons of Issachar” (1 Chronicle 12:32) in Israel who knew the times and what Israel should do.

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Pray that the church of Jesus Christ might align itself fully with the heart throbbing call of Jesus to go forth and reach all people’s, and that the advancement of His kingdom around the globe would become the church’s priority in the categories of finances, our energies, and our time.

Pray that God would use the community focused

nature of the emerging generation today to call forth multitudes of teams who would arise together out of college and go into an unreached people group to live and serve long-term.

A. PRAISE: I enter into the worship and adoration John witnessed when he heard the voice of many angels encircling the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and their number was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice: “Worthy are You, the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.” (Revelation 5:11-12) You, Lord Jesus Christ, received glory and honor from God the Father when the voice came to You from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” (2 Peter 1:17) B. CONFESSION: Surely Your hand is not too short to save, nor Your ear too dull to hear. But our iniquities have separated us from You, our God; our sins have hidden Your face from us, so that You will not hear. Yet You saw that there was no one to intervene; so Your own arm worked salvation for You, and righteousness sustained You. (Isaiah 59:1-2) C. PETITION:

Like Ezra, I want to set my heart to study Your Word, to obey it and to do it, and to teach it to others. (Ezra 7:10) Give me understanding, and I will keep Your law and observe it with all my heart. Make me walk in the path of Your commands, for there I find delight. Incline my heart to Your testimonies and not to selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things, and revive me in Your way. (Psalm 119:34-37)

A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Ask the Lord to teach us how to pray. He is the author of this medium that He has set up to bring forth His purposes in the earth. Will He not teach His people how to function in prayer at the highest levels of effectiveness, if we will but ask Him, listen, and respond to Him.

Pray for utter fascination with the person of Jesus to

consume those who pray. If we are caught up in the splendor of Jesus we will soon be on our way to praying His heart and for His purposes to be birthed in our churches, campuses, and ministries.

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Pray for the character level in today’s emerging generation. Pray for God to build His character deep

into lives. Unless we are people who are above reproach in all we do, we will not be credible to an unbelieving world.

Pray for a greater revelation of what it cost Jesus to

purchase us with His blood, to fall upon the church today and that we would break out of our comfortable lives. Most are sitting on the sidelines, instead of actively participating in the in-breaking of the kingdom of God in the earth today.

C. BREAKING UP FALLOW GROUND

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. (Psalms 122:6) There is no peace for this troubled region through politics, but only through the transformation that comes through the gospel. Ask God to move with power in the Israel-Palestinian situation and bring about reconciliation from both sides.

God has big plans for the city of Jerusalem and Israel

in the end times. Pray that they may act justly now and cease the oppression that has been wielded against others in their vicinity, provoking them to violent action.

A. PRAISE: Lord God of hosts – You who touch the earth and it melts, and all who live in it mourn; You who build Your staircase in the heavens and set its foundation on the earth; You who call for the waters of the sea and pour them out over the face of the earth – The Lord is Your name. (Amos 9:5-6)

All flesh is silent before You, O Lord, for You are aroused from Your holy dwelling place. (Zechariah 2:13) B. CONFESSION: How can I discern my errors? Cleanse me from hidden faults. Keep Your servant also from presumptuous sins: Let them not rule over me. Then I will be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. (Psalm 19:12-13) C. PETITION: Since I died with You, Jesus, to the basic principles of this world, may I not submit to the world’s regulations as though I still belonged to it. (Colossians 2:20) Rise up, O Lord! May Your enemies be scattered, and may those who hate You flee before You. (Numbers 10:35)

A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Pray for humility to mark those who seek the face of God. Pride has prevailed for far too long and affects the prayer movement for the nations. Pray that we might repent and ask Jesus to clothe His people with His humility (1 Peter 5:5).

Pray for those who pray to grasp the history of the

student mission movement and the missionary movement as a whole, to know what God has done so that they can seek His face to, “Do it again, Lord!” There is nothing new under the sun with God. (Ecclesiastes 1:9)

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Pray for a move of the Holy Spirit among the emerging generation towards extravagant giving materially to work among the unreached. May we embrace the radical giving spirit that the Father possessed in giving of His own Son for us.

Ask God to protect the hope of Message Bearers as

they serve in difficult regions of the earth. Pray against despair and oppression from the enemy (Romans 15:13) and may they remain vibrant in spirit and renewed by the Holy Spirit constantly.

C. BREAKING UP FALLOW GROUND

Ask God to move in power and bring forth justice in the earth as He has promised. So many injustices are taking place globally and God’s heart is to break down these walls of injustice and to establish His justice and rule in the hearts of men.

May message bearers take up the call of Micah 6:8

which declares, “He has shown you, o man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God?” Pray for God’s people to become vessels and mediators of God’s loving justice in the earth.

A. PRAISE: You will keep me strong to the end, so that I will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. You are faithful; You have called me into fellowship with Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. ( I Corinthians 1:8-9) No eye has seen, nor ear has heard, no mind has conceived, O God, what You have prepared for those who love You. (1 Corinthians 2:9) B. CONFESSION:

If I claim to be without sin, I deceive myself and the truth is not in me. If I confess my sins, You are faithful and just and will forgive my sins and purify me from all unrighteousness. If I claim that I have not sinned, I make You out to be a liar and Your Word is not in me. (1 John 8-10)

No temptation has overtaken me except what is common to all people. You are faithful; You will not let me tempted beyond what I am able, but with the temptation, You will also provide a way out, so that I will be able to endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13) C. PETITION:

Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; May Your good spirit lead me on level ground. (Psalm 143:10) Hear, O Lord, my voice when I call; be merciful to me and answer me. My heart said of You, “Seek His face!” Your face, Lord, will I seek. (Psalm 27:7-8)

A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Pray for an excitement, zeal, and fervency to consume those who commit to stand in the gap as intercessor. May the cloud of God surround them and captivate them with spiritual drive to birth His plans for the student mission movement.

Pray for the spiritual environment on your campus

and on campuses in your nation to be conducive to multitudes of small groups of global prayer, who are dedicated and who produce spiritual fruit, being established and sustained.

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Pray that the challenge and call to long-term involvement in global ministry would be cast consistently and with spiritual authority in the student world and that hundreds and thousands would have their hearts prepared beforehand to respond and proactively sign themselves up for service.

Ask the Lord to raise up His army, like the prophet

C. BREAKING UP FALLOW GROUND

Pray for physical protection of the people of God from the coming bird flu pandemic that most say isn’t a matter of if it will come, but when and to what severity. Seek God to turn back this pandemic that could kill multitudes of people. If God’s people pray, this problem could be averted.

Pray Isaiah 61:1-3 over the 10/40 window. Stop at

each section and pray for specific breakthrough to come in the Muslim world and for a move of God to prevail with the result of multitudes of Muslims turning to Christ.

A. PRAISE: O Lord, You reign; You are clothed with majesty; You are robed in majesty and are armed with strength. Indeed, the world is firmly established; it cannot be moved. Your throne is established of old; You are form everlasting. Your testimonies stand firm. Holiness adorns Your house, O Lord, forever. (Psalm 93:1-2,5) You are close to the brokenhearted, Lord, and save those who are crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but You deliver the righteous out of them all. (Psalm 34:18-19) B. CONFESSION: You, Lord God, declared this assurance to Jeremiah: “I will cleanse them from all of the sin they have committed against me, and I will forgive all of the sin they committed when they turned away from me. (Jeremiah 33:8) C. PETITION: May I not wear myself out to get rich; give me the understanding to cease. May I not set my desire on what flies away, for wealth surely sprouts wings and flies into the heavens like an eagle. (Proverbs 23:4-5)

I look to You for my daily bread, to forgive my debts as I have also forgiven my debtors. Do not lead me into temptation, but deliver me from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom an the power and the glory forever. (Matthew 6:11-13)

A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Ask God to breathe upon small groups who pray for the nations on campuses. Pray that they would seek His face continually and not lose heart. (Luke 18:1)

Pray for a turning from religiosity and having a form

of godliness but lacking true power (2 Timothy 3:5), to intimate heart to heart communion with Jesus. (Isaiah 29:13) Intimacy with Jesus is at the core of the prayer movement being sustained for the long haul.

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Pray for an overcoming of the spirit of fear that plagues the people of God today. Ask the Holy Spirit to give people a selfless love that thinks of others and their needs before themselves.

Pray for the new mission structures, movements,

ministries and training schools that need to be

C. BREAKING UP FALLOW GROUND

Pray for the spiritually needy country of Japan. It has seen a number of disasters that have rocked the people’s confidence. Japan has been a historically hard and barren ground producing little fruit. Pray for fruit that remains to be known.

Ask the Lord to raise up 200 new Message Bearers to

go and serve Him in Japan, who are meek and gentle, yet full of spiritual authority. Pray for favor in the eyes of the Japanese and for the funding necessary to live among the wealth of the nation. Pray also that the Holy Spirit would give creative ideas for how to go about serving, reaching out, and planting churches in this nation.

A. PRAISE: Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but the one who trusts in You, O Lord, will be surrounded by Your lovingkindness (Psalm 32:10) I know that You can do all things and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted. (Job 42:2) Every word that You speak is flawless, O God; You are a shield to those who take refuge in You. (Proverbs 30:5) B. CONFESSION: I know, O Lord, that my life is not my own; it is not for me to direct my steps. O Lord, correct me, but with justice – not in Your anger, lest You reduce me to nothing. (Jeremiah 10:23-24) C. PETITION: May I discipline myself to godliness. For physical exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for both the present life and the life to come. (1 Timothy 4:7-8)

A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Pray Isaiah 54:2-3 over the student world and ask God to expand the prayer movement for the nations to every campus, cultivating global prayer teams, night and day prayer rooms, and focused intercession for the advancing student mission movement.

Pray for hearts to be captivated with the spiritual

truth that God has privileged us to be alive in one of the greatest hours of Christian history and has brought us into the kingdom “for such a time as this!” (Esther 4:14)

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Pray for Message Bearers to be conformed to the image of Christ, not only through His victory in the resurrection, but also through His suffering and humiliation on the cross. (Isaiah 3)

Ask God to give Message Bearers the critical

understanding and comprehension of the exceedingly great power of God that is at their disposal. (Ephesians 1:19-20)

(Job 23:10-11) B. A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Ask God to give students patient hearts as they expectantly wait, before the Lord, for answers to prayer. Pray that He will teach them the “waiting in faith” lifestyle. (Psalm 40:1)

Pray for God to set His people free on campuses from

the lie that prayer doesn’t work. It does work if we submit ourselves to doing it His way. (1 John 5:14)

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Pray that God would unveil spiritual giftedness to the emerging generation and that they would come to the realization of how God has wired them spiritually and know how these gifts can be stewarded for His kingdom purposes. (1 Peter 4:10)

Pray over the emerging generation who will be

C. BREAKING UP FALLOW GROUND

Pray for the urban poor in the mega-cities of Africa and Asia. These are collectively the greatest unreached people group in the world. They live in stark poverty, many barely able to keep themselves alive and yet very few laborers are going to them and serving in their midst because of how extremely difficult it is. Pray for God to raise up the right kind of Message Bearers who are ready physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually to immerse themselves in this difficult setting.

Ask God to prepare the spiritual ground among the

urban poor and that those who serve them would contextualize the gospel message to meet them where they are at. Pray also for the physical needs to be met in these places and for work to be commenced to break the spiritual cycles of poverty in these regions.

A. PRAISE: You, O Lord of Hosts, will be exalted in judgment, and You, Holy God, will show Yourself holy in righteousness. (Is. 5:16) I greatly rejoice in my salvation, even though now, for a little while, I grieve because of various trials. They come so that my faith, though much more precious than gold that perishes, even though it is refined by fire, may be proved genuine and that it may result in praise, glory, and honor when You are revealed, O Jesus Christ. (1Peter 1:6-7) B. CONFESSION: Lord, there are six things You hate, seven that are detestable: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that she innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that run swiftly to evil, a false witness breathes lies, and one who causes strife among brothers and sisters. (Proverbs 6:16-19) C. PETITION: May I obey those who are in authority over me in all things, not with external service as one who pleases people, but with sincerity of heart, fearing You, Lord. A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Pray for staff leaders on campuses to empower and equip students to create prayer ministries focused on the nations. May they give students tremendous freedom with accountability in this realm.

Ask God to pour out a spirit of joy on these students

that as they labor in prayer and intercession for the nations, they will be assured in the depths of their hearts, that they do not labor in vain.

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

Pray for Message Bearers serving around the world currently and who will be raised up and “GO” for long- term during 2006. Pray that their sustenance would come from a daily encounter with the Lord and not from mere physical food.

Pray that Message Bearers would be marked by a

We are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. A. THE PRAYER MOVEMENT FOR THE NATIONS

Pray that God would prepare the hearts of students on campuses that will host a Haystack Night as part of “The Year of the Haystack” campaign during 2006. Ask the Holy Spirit to breathe on each campus and spark into a flame the prayer movement for the nations that would be carefully cultivated and cared for and brought forth as a mighty wildfire. Pray for revival fire to break out that would motivate 30-40% of students on campuses to become involved in small groups for global prayer.

Pray for a new sense of urgency to be released upon

administrators of Christian colleges and universities related to the prayer movement for the nations. Knowing that this is the bedrock God uses to move in the earth with power, may we never cease to pray and intercede for the nations.

B. THE MESSAGE BEARER MOVEMENT

As students are challenged to become Message Bearers during “The Year of the Haystack” campaign, pray that their hearts might be quickened by the Spirit to respond and be vigilant with that commitment, carrying them through the remainder of college and into the nations upon graduation.

In this postmodern generation that balks at making

firm decisions and “commitments,” desiring instead to keep all options open and then often failing to do anything, pray that the Holy Spirit would move upon the emerging generation to make faith-filled, Spirit- led commitments before the Lord and others and faithfully walk them out, unless the Lord clearly leads otherwise.
