Gathering the ingredients…• How did you begin your planning for technology staff

development?

• What were your goals? How were they developed?

• Explain the role of staff development in a professional learning community?

• Did you have a time line for development and implementation?

• How did you find the trainers….from where do they come?

• What were the skill sets or learning opportunities you wanted staff to understand, operationalize and master? How did you know that?

• How do you handle the time challenge?• How are professional organizations supportive of

professional growth?• How does research factor into staff development?

Defining adult learners…

Who are they? Will we know them when we see

them?

Page 12: 21 Century Staff Dev

Teachers as adult learners

– Teachers have a vested interest in what they learning… how it will connect in their classroom and beyond….

– Provide support, anticipate questions and issues

– Recognize different learning styles…– Understand opportunity costs — what

is being given up to participate?

Blazing a Trail to Staff Development

Trail Mix:Pretzels - Early Adopters

Raisins - Adult Learners

Nuts – High Flyers

M & Ms – Best Practices

Page 15: 21 Century Staff Dev

Adult Learners (raisins)• Nobody is born knowing this stuff

— although some staff arrive with a chip!

How to help someone use a computer:• A computer is a means to an end. The person you're helping probably cares

mostly about the end. This is reasonable.

• The best way to learn is through apprenticeship -- that is, by doing some real task together with someone who has a different set of skills or uses.

• Knowledge lives in communities, not individuals. A computer user who's part of a community of computer users will have an easier time than one who isn't.

• Take a long-term view. Who do users in this community get help from? If you focus on building that person's skills, the skills will diffuse to everyone else.

• Session’s expectations/outcomes identified and ever present

• Interactive approach (what does that look like in a lab setting?)

• Everyone’s a learner…

Page 18: 21 Century Staff Dev

• Technology tools: tested, prepared, and ready

• Address all expectations and outcomes for the program

• Provide lots of communication before, during and after…

• Provide clear directions (print, tutorial, visual)

• Provide Peopleware (Support staff available)
