Historic African American Migration

Approximately five million southern blacks moved to the northern and western USA regions between 1915 and 1960 in search of a higher quality of life, particularly reflected via improved economic conditions..

Major destinations included Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and New York.

Throughout the 1940s migrants shifted far west to Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle.
