As a result, the United States only sent athletes to 2020 Guaranteed Rate Skate America in Las Vegas. The event was held in a bubble format at The Orleans Arena with no spectators. The Athletes At the 2020 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina, Alysa Liu (ladies), Nathan Chen (men), Alexa Knierim and Chris Knierim (pairs), and Madison Chock and Evan Bates (ice dance) were crowned champions. Chen won his fourth straight title in the Championship competition. Liu became the youngest lady to win back-to-back U.S. titles at 14 years old and attempted the first ever quadruple jump in the ladies competition. Chock and Bates won their second U.S. Championships crown in Greensboro after winning in 2015. The Knierims also won back their crown for the second time in Greensboro, winning their third U.S. title (2015, ’18). Chris ultimately retired at the end of the season and Alexa paired up with 2017 U.S. pairs champion Brandon Frazier.
Ladies: Alysa Liu is the two-time reigning U.S. champion. At the 2020 U.S. Championships, she became the first U.S. woman to attempt a quadruple jump at the event and became the youngest U.S. lady to win back-to-back titles at 14 years old. Due to the impact of COVID-19, the ISU Junior Grand Prix Series was canceled and Liu has yet to compete this season. Mariah Bell had her career-best finish in Greensboro, earning silver. The California-based skater is coming off her first Grand Prix victory at Skate America earlier this fall and will look to continue to move up the podium in January. Bradie Tennell capped the 2019-20 season with a bronze medal at the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships 2020 in Seoul. She earned the bronze medal last year in Greensboro. Tennell is also the 2018 U.S. champion and was a member of the 2018 Olympic team where she was the top U.S. finisher in the ladies event, placing ninth. Karen Chen is the 2017 U.S. champion and a member of the 2018 Olympic Team. Last year, Chen grabbed the pewter medal at the U.S. Championships and competed on the Four Continents Team where she placed seventh. This fall in Vegas, she finished fourth at Skate America. Amber Glenn will look to earn her first trip to the U.S. podium after finishing fifth last year in Greensboro. She was named to the 2020 Four Continents team and finished ninth at the event. At Skate America, she placed fifth overall. The Texas-based skater is also the 2014 U.S. junior champion and finished seventh at 2019 U.S. Championships. Audrey Shin will be making her first U.S. Championships appearance at the Championship-level this January. The up-and-coming skater had a breakout performance at 2020 Guaranteed Rate Skate America, earning the bronze medal. Shin also represented the United States at the 2020 Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne, Switzerland. Men: Nathan Chen’s continues his undefeated streak since the 2018 World Championships. In Greensboro, he became the first man to win four straight U.S. titles (2017-20) since Brian Boitano (1985-88). Last December, he also became the first U.S. man to win the Grand Prix Final three times, earning his third consecutive title. Chen claimed gold at 2020 Guaranteed Rate Skate America this fall and will look for his historic fifth title in Las Vegas. Jason Brown had a strong end to the 2019-20 season, taking the silver medal at U.S. Championships as well as at Four Continents in Seoul. The Toronto-based skater was unable to travel to Skate America and will make his first appearance of the season in Las Vegas this January. Brown is also a 2014 Olympic bronze medalist in the Team Event and five-time U.S. medalist. Tomoki Hiwatashi improved on his 2019-20 campaign with a third-place finish at the 2020 U.S. Championships, and a top-10 finish at Four Continents in Seoul. Earlier this season, he finished fourth at Skate America. Hiwatashi won the World Junior title in 2019, marking his second World Junior Championships medal (also claimed bronze in 2016). After taking the majority of the 2019-20 season off, Vincent Zhou earned the pewter medal in his first competition back at the 2020 U.S. Championships. He picked up right where he left off at Skate America this fall, grabbing the silver medal. He will look to make his fifth consecutive appearance on the U.S. Championship podium this season. Pairs: Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier are in their debut season after teaming up in March 2020. Knierim, who previously competed with her husband Chris Knierim, is the reigning U.S. champion. The Knierims won the title in 2015, 2018, and 2020, and are Olympic bronze medalists (2018 Team Event). Frazier previously competed with Haven Denney and won the U.S. title in 2017. Knierim and Frazier were crowned Skate America champions in October.
In just their third season as a pair, Jessica Calalang and Brian Johnson look to cement themselves as the top U.S. pairs team. The duo burst onto the scene at the 2020 U.S. Championships in Greensboro with a second-place finish and record-breaking free skate. The California-based pair, who finished second at Skate America earlier this season, earned a fourth-place finish at 2020 Four Continents, the team’s first ISU Championship event. Ashley Cain-Gribble and Timothy LeDuc are coming off a fourth-place finish at the 2020 U.S. Championships. In October, the duo finished fourth at Skate America. Based in Dallas, the pair are 2019 U.S. champions, and finished ninth at the 2019 World Championships. Audrey Lu and Misha Mitrofanov will look to move up the ranks in Las Vegas. Relocating to Boston during the offseason and beginning part of the 2020-21 season, the duo finished third at 2020 Guaranteed Rate Skate America. The tandem finished sixth at the 2020 and 2019 U.S. Championships. Ice dance: Madison Chock and Evan Bates are the reigning U.S. champions having won their second U.S. title in 2020 (Ironically, the duo’s first U.S. title was also won in Greensboro in 2015). The duo finished second at the 2019 Grand Prix Final and won their second consecutive Four Continents title in Seoul last February. The tandem has yet to compete this season. Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue look to get back atop the U.S. podium after a second-place finish in 2020. The Montreal-based team won the U.S. title in 2018 and 2019. The pair won 2020 Guaranteed Rate Skate America, after finishing third at 2020 Four Continents. Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker have earned the bronze medal at the previous two U.S. Championships. The duo claimed the silver medal at Skate America earlier this season. Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko will be making their third appearance at the championship level in Las Vegas. The Michigan-based team finished third at Skate America in 2020, and a career-best fourth at last year’s U.S. Championships. Ponomarenko is the son of Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomerenko, the only ice dance team to win an Olympic medal of every color. Caroline Green and Michael Parsons made their debut on the senior ice dance circuit last year at the 2020 U.S. Championships with a fifth-place finish. After competing with their siblings for many years, the two paired up in June of 2019. The tandem finished fourth at Skate America earlier this season.
Storylines In addition to the ample field of play storylines, this major event has many other off-ice or event-related stories worth telling.
• Centennial Celebration: U.S. Figure Skating recently launched its Centennial Celebration. Founded in 1921, U.S. Figure Skating is one of the first U.S. Olympic sport governing bodies to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Throughout the year and culminating with the 2022 Toyota U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Nashville, Tennessee, the Centennial Celebration will spotlight figure skating’s everyday heroes, its iconic and inspirational athletes, the vital networks that support skaters and members clubs across the nation. The campaign focuses on three core areas of engagement: content, experiences and philanthropy, with a strong focus on digital and virtual interactions during the first half of 2021. Learn more about the Centennial Celebration at Usfigureskating100.org.
• The Bubble: U.S. Figure Skating successfully staged 2020 Guaranteed Rate Skate America in a bubble-type environment at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas in October. For January’s U.S. Championships in Las Vegas, U.S. Figure Skating will be able to use Skate America’s operational plan, which had been approved by the Nevada Gaming Control Board, streamlining both the preparation and on-site execution of the competition. Championship-level competition will take place from Jan. 14–17, 2021, and junior-level competition from Jan.
20–21, 2021. As with Skate America, no spectators will be permitted, though fans will be able to watch extensive coverage on NBC, NBCSN and Peacock Premium.
• Virtual Fan Experience: Fans can get an inside look at The Orleans Arena from the comfort of their own home with the 2021 Toyota U.S. Figure Skating Championships Virtual Fan Experience. Check out the site for quick access to everything you need to know about the event, including TV and streaming schedules, feature stories, Fantasy Skating presented by Xfinity, HomeLight Home Ice Bingo and more.
• Hall of Fame Induction: In late December, U.S. Figure Skating announced that U.S. champion Johnny Weir, as well as Gale Tanger and the late Sandy (Schwometer) Lamb have been elected to the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame. Due to the ongoing COVD-19 pandemic, their induction ceremony will be postponed until the 2022 Toyota U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Nashville, Tennessee. Johnny Weir, who now is on NBC’s broadcast team for figure skating, is a two-time Olympian, three-time consecutive U.S. champion, 2008 World bronze medalist, two-time Grand Prix Final bronze medalist and the 2001 World Junior champion. Sandy (Schwomeyer) Lamb was a fixture of the Special Olympics Skating Program and the first female president of the Professional Skaters Association. Lamb developed the Special Olympics Skating Program in 1985 and served as its longtime skating director. She passed away in June. Gale Tanger has served as a figure skating judge and official for over 50 years. The recipient of the International Skating Union’s prestigious Gold Medal of Honor for outstanding contribution and distinguished service, she is a three-time PSA Official of the Year (2017, ’10, ’06). Tanger has served on the U.S. Olympic Committee and was the first female Chair of the Winter Sports Organizations. She has served at six Olympic Games.
• Adjusted Qualifying Structure: Athletes qualified for the U.S. Championships by receiving byes, or qualifying through the U.S. Figure Skating Championship Series presented by Toyota. Announced in August as an alternative to U.S. Figure Skating's traditional qualifying season, the 2021 U.S. Championship Series presented by Toyota was scheduled to begin the week of Nov. 9 in Norwood, Mass.; Blaine, Minn.; and Spokane, Wash. Due to COVID-19, the competition transitioned to a virtual format. Byes were awarded to senior athletes who placed in the top-five in the same event at the 2020 Toyota U.S. Figure Skating Championships per the U.S. Figure Skating Rulebook, or finished in the top-four in U.S. Figure Skating's International Selection Pool (ISP) Points Challenge.
• Virtual Training Format: Due to the impact of COVID-19, athletes had to make adjustments to their off-season training. Many athletes learned their programs over Zoom and FaceTime, and started their choreographing process off the ice. Additionally, with the majority of in-person competitions canceled, athletes utilized virtual competitions such as the Peggy Fleming Trophy and the International Selection Pool (ISP) Points Challenge.
• Music/Announce: In additional to judges and officials, those who play the music and announce the competition are appointed through U.S. Figure Skating and work on a volunteer basis. Many of these people have worked since the time of vinyl records.
• Bright Future for Team USA: Following Team USA’s success at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, the red, white and blue entered the new quad this season with a new momentum. Now one year out from the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, the U.S. contingent has had 18 World and World Junior medalists since the Olympic Winter Games Sochi 2014, including Nathan Chen (2019, gold; 2018, gold), Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue (2019, bronze; 2018, silver), Madison Chock and Evan Bates (2016, bronze; 2015, silver), Vincent Zhou (2019, bronze; 2017, junior, gold), Tomoki Hiwatashi (2019, junior, gold; 2016, junior, bronze), Avonley Nguyen and Vadim Kolesnik (2020, junior, gold); Alysa Liu (2020, junior, bronze); Ting Cui (2019, junior, bronze), Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko (2018, junior, silver; 2017, junior, bronze), Michael Parsons (2017, junior, gold; 2016, junior, silver – all with sister Rachel Parsons), Lorraine McNamara and Quinn Carpenter (2016, junior, gold; 2015, junior, silver), and Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker (2014, junior, gold). Team USA looks to cement their growing success next February in China.
• Time Commitment: Skaters at the highest levels of the U.S. Figure Skating competitive structure train 5-6 days a week and often put in hours most Americans dedicate to a full-time job.
• Off-ice Training: In addition to time spent training on the ice (averaging between 3-6 hours a day depending on discipline), skaters work with personal trainers, physical and massage therapists and attend camps, yoga, Pilates classes, etc.
• The Team: Athletes are supported by their coaches, choreographers, trainers, families and friends. Many coaches work with several elite athletes and work as part of a coaching team to ensure each athlete gets the proper attention.
• NBC: NBC Sports carries coverage of the U.S. Championships. NBC and NBCSN will broadcast over 16 hours of live coverage during championship weekend and also broadcast the Skating Spectacular during a two-hour show on Sunday, Feb. 14. Additionally, all Championship and junior-level competition can be watched on Peacock Premium.
