2021 September WORD 1 For the past several months, the Metropolis of San Francisco has been offering a virtual Stewardship Town Hall Series every month. On July 26, I was asked to co-present on the topic, “Fostering Community through Outreach and Evangelism.” It was a blessed opportunity to share practical and applicable examples of what I feel are critical ministries essential to any parish. In short, I presented how increased stewardship at Nativity of Christ has been achieved through two primary components: 1) Active, Christ- centered, diverse, and communicated (ACDC) ministries, and 2) Showing people that we care. On September 1 at 5pm, Bill Marianes has invited me to join him on Ancient Faith Radio to continue this conversation about stewardship. Tune in to this live discussion through https://www.ancientfaith.com/ radio/live. The Metropolis presentation, “Fostering Community through Outreach and Evangelism” can also be viewed at https:// sanfran.goarch.org/pages/coronavirus-resource- page/stewardship. My knowledge and experience on the topic of stewardship has been incredibly strengthened through witnessing and experiencing the dedication of Nativity of Christ stewards. In the past five years, I have observed numerous individuals and families dramatically increasing their involvement, and passionately displaying their desire to serve the parish and greater community. Through this increased giving of time, talent, and treasure, our parish has truly been able to foster community through outreach. At the end of the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, August 22, His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos bestowed upon me the rank of Economos; literally translated as “steward.” The primary change with this title is that I now have the blessing to wear a pectoral cross during worship services. But what is purpose of this rank? “In the Church of the fourth century, the οἰκονόμος was an official responsible for managing ecclesiastical property, under the supervision of the bishop… After the fall of the Byzantine Empire, the rank of οἰκονόμος disappeared as an active post of the Church. It remained simply an honorary title to be awarded to presbyters by the bishop for exceptional service to the Church.”– www.archons.org/ titles I continue to be humbled that Metropolitan Gerasimos felt I was worthy to be honored in this way. However I pray we all realize that it was a testament to the faithful stewardship of NOC and a blessing truly bestowed upon our entire community. Offering presentations on stewardship and now receiving the title of Economos are important reminders that we are all stewards (oikonomoi), overlooking and attending to our parish community with the blessings God has given to each of us. May we continue this sacred work in good health for the glory of God! “And the Word became flesh & dwelt among us, full of grace & truth.” ~John 1:14 NATIVITY OF CHRIST GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH The Word September 2021

Sun Sept 26 The Falling Asleep of St. John the Theologian I John 4:12-19 John 19:25-27, 21:24-25

St. Sophia and Her DaughtersThese Saints were from Italy and contested for the Faith about the year 126, during the reign of the Emperor Hadrian. Faith was 12 years old, Hope, 10, and Love, 9; each was tormented and then beheaded, from the eldest to the youngest. Their mother Sophia mourned at their grave for three days, where she also fell asleep in peace; because of her courageous endurance in the face of her daughters’ sufferings, she is also counted a martyr. The name Sophia means “wisdom” in Greek; as for her daughters’ names, Faith, Hope, and Love (Charity), they are Pistis, Elpis, and Agape in Greek, and Vera, Nadezhda, and Lyubov in Russian.

Apolytikion of Martyrs Sophia, Pistis, Elpis & AgapeO Lord Jesus, unto Thee Thy lamb doth cry with a great voice: O my Bridegroom, Thee I love; and seeking Thee, I now contest, and with Thy baptism am crucified and buried. I suffer for Thy sake, that I may reign with Thee; for Thy sake I die, that I may live in Thee: Accept me offered out of longing to Thee as a spotless sacrifice. Lord, save our souls through her intercessions, since Thou art great in mercy.

Kontakion of Martyrs Sophia, Pistis, Elpis & AgapeSince Faith and Hope and Love were in truth sacred branches of ven'rable Sophia, the namesake of wisdom by grace, they have shown all men that Greek wisdom is foolishness, and in contest, they proved to be prize-winning victors; wherefore, they received a crown that never shall perish from Christ God, the Lord of all.

Sharing Our Kitchen for the Greater GoodSince late July, Nativity is pleased to be renting the kitchen Tuesdays through Thursdays from 12:30 – 6:30 to Ceres. Since 2008, Ceres has supported individuals dealing with serious illness with free or low-cost, nutrient-rich prepared meals, made with love and delivered to their homes by volunteers. They operate three kitchens in Marin and Sonoma counties and recently delivered their one millionth meal. Ceres is very grateful to Nativity for the opportunity to use our kitchen and we are equally thrilled to be able to share our facility to such a worthwhile organization. Below are a few key considerations:

• Nativity functions will always have priority. Please notify the Church Office of all events as soon as possible so that Ceres and/or Nativity can make the necessary adjustments. It is very important that we have a current kitchen usage calendar. NOTE: Ceres will not be using our kitchen two weeks prior to the Marin Greek festival.

• For activities such as Festival cooking preparations, we will need to be considerate of Ceres’ schedule.

• Ceres is storing things in our kitchen, refrigerators, freezer, and hall closet. Please be mindful and use only Nativity equipment and supplies.

• Ceres has wonderful volunteer opportunities for both adults and teens. Pleases see their website at www.ceresproject.org for more information.

• Being that this is a new partnership and also the first time we have rented our kitchen, we are working closely with Ceres to work out any initial challenges. Please contact Matina Seremetis (415-297-7501) with any questions, concerns, or suggestions.

How to donate to the Nativity of Christ from your IRA if you are over 72Using a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is a great way for folks over 72 with an IRA who need to withdraw funds to meet a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) to contribute to Nativity’s Beyond 50 campaign or Stewardship fund. The money you contribute to Nativity using a QCD is not included in your adjusted gross income on your tax return, which is a better option than listing the donation as a simple charitable contribution. According to the IRS:

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) is generally a nontaxable distribution made directly by the trustee of your IRA (other than a SEP or SIMPLE IRA) to an organization eligible to receive tax deductible contributions. You must be at least age 72, when the distribution was made. Also, you must have the same type of acknowledgment of your contribution that you would need to claim a deduction for charitable contribution.

A Lasting Gift for the Church – (Planned Giving)A bequest or gift through your will is one of the simplest ways to make a lasting gift to the Church. Please consult your financial advisor for advice. A suggested wording: I hereby bequeath the sum of $________ as a charitable bequest to the Nativity of Christ Greek Orthodox Church of Novato (Tax ID23-7122395) to be used for charitable purposes of the Church.

Stewardship“If I do not feel a sense of joy in God’s creation, if I forget to offer the world back to God with thankfulness, I have advanced very little upon the Way.” Metropolitan Kallistos Ware

Modern life influences us often to be consumers. We go on Amazon, shop at Costco, return to local stores we like and, of course, not to stores that we don’t like.

In matters concerning the earth though we are not consumers. As an Orthodox Christian we

know that everything belongs to God and we are stewards of this beautiful earth. God created the world and said, “It is good.” God said you are my children and my creation, as well as, the earth. We must not act then as consumers taking what we want from earth.

Imagine God saying, “This is all mine, this is our earth and these people around the world are all of our family. These are my children.” With the Spirit of God within us then we are caretakers of this earth and all the people in it.

God’s earth and God’s people – do I act as a steward or as a consumer? How do I share my resources with the church and the community?

For the past year and a half our classrooms have been rarely used due to the pandemic, but we took advantage of this time through the goals and funds of the Beyond 50 Plan. Old, stained carpet was replaced with luxury vinyl; the walls all received a fresh coat of paint; bright, blue chairs were purchased for the littlest students, and, most recently, televisions were purchased and installed in each classroom to enable teachers to strengthen their lesson plans through diversified teaching mediums.

All these renovation efforts of the Beyond 50 Plan came to life on August 15 as we celebrated the Dormition of the Theotokos and resumed in-person Sunday School. Our energetic teachers and joyful students enjoyed a clean, safe, and welcoming classroom environment to learn and grow in our Orthodox faith. It was truly a fulfillment of the vision and mission of our Beyond 50 Plan that we continue to implement in 2021!

As we continue to pray for the health of Vicki Kalabokes, I pray we are also able to share her enthusiasm in supporting the goals and objectives of the Beyond 50 Plan. Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, may we connect, engage, and grow as a community!

In Christ,Fr. John

“Go and make Disciples” was our Lord’s clear instruction. And at the end of His parable where the Good Samaritan helped an injured Jewish stranger, He advised us to “Go and do likewise” and help our brothers and sisters in need.

So how can we do that critical work in our lives and our communities (i.e., “our Jerusalem”)? We will explore practical ideas you and your Parish can implement to answer this critical question with Fr. John Kocolas, the Proistamenos at Nativity of Christ Orthodox Church in Novato, California.

Nativity of Christ’s Community Outreach Ministry is a light of goodness in its community that does so much to help so many. For example, they prepare meals for the St. Vincent de Paul food ministry. But that is only the tip of the iceberg that runs deep in this community of faithful Disciples of Christ.

Join us for a discussion of creative ways you and your Parish can “go and do likewise.” And we would especially love for you to call in and share some ways you and your parish is making Disciples and serving others.

Updates Around the CampusFrom the direction of the local fire marshal, the junipers in front of the church were removed in July. The area has received new rocks that give attention to the now more visible, beautiful view. In August, the driveway and parking lot were resealed, as is the necessary maintenance practice for the space. These improvements are possible through the Parish Budget and the remaining Maintenance Fund.

President's CommentaryI think all of us are looking forward to gathering again as a community, working with other ministries, and helping build a Philoptochos that is inclusive, multigenerational, and engaged in good works we all feel passionate about. However, it is also important that we balance self-care while being engaged in good works. I hope we can keep this in mind as we enter the busiest season of the year. In the wise words of my Papou, “If you do not take care of yourself, you cannot take care of others.”

Adopt-a-SeminarianWe are in search of a new Seminarian to adopt since Fr. Nick Metrakos graduated from Holy Cross with a Masters in Divinity. A new list of Seminarians from San Francisco Metropolis Philoptochos will be published this month, and hopefully we will be telling you about our new Seminarian in the October Word!

Harvest LuncheonA date for the Harvest Luncheon has been set for November 7 and details for reservations, etc., will be published in October.

YAL UpdateIn July, our group enjoyed a trip to the Marin Headlands for a picnic and a beautiful hike. In August, we teamed up with Annunciation in Modesto for an Escape Room adventure and Vespers! This month, we will be doing a service project with Beyond Differences, packing activity kits for their back-to-school program. Stay tuned for a date announcement, and contact Mary Mellas ([email protected]) with any questions.

Beyond Differences’ mission is to inspire students nationwide to end social isolation and create cultures of belonging for everyone. They   work directly with middle and high school students, on campuses and online, to help disrupt social isolation and promote inclusion in their schools. They also provide schools with Social Emotional Learning tools to help tackle loneliness and foster a sense of community and complementary professional development for educators.

Project Mexico at the MonasteryOn  Saturday August 7, volunteers from our parish spent their day at the Holy Assumption Monastery in Calistoga performing a service project benefitting both the monastery and Project Mexico.  Project Mexico interns along with the sisters from the monastery guided our group towards completing various projects, including polishing candle holders and chalice sets, cleaning screens, cutting up and bagging fresh fruit for the freezer, and tending to the beautiful gardens. Our volunteers enjoyed a wonderful lunch and beautiful participatory service of gratitude led by Mother Macrina’s melodic voice. It was truly a spiritually uplifting day. Many thanks to the Thomatos, Gagas, Fotinos, and Messner families, along with Sophia Stathis for participating in this service project. Much gratitude also goes out to the talented college students who volunteer as Project Mexico interns. They showed great dedication as Orthodox youth to their summer service projects in Mexico and throughout Northern and Southern California.Donations are still being collected and can be sent to the Church Office with a note “Project Mexico.” Donations help to support both the orphanage and the home-building projects in Tijuana.

It is the practice of our Church to give the name of a Saint to a newborn child. By assuming the name of a Saint, we honor the Saint, and we also provide the new Christian with an example worthy of emulation. The Saint then becomes the Patron of the child, and we pray that through the Saint’s intercessions, God will guide and protect the child throughout the child’s life. Each month, we will be acknowledging in our monthly bulletin, those celebrating their name day.If by chance we accidentally missed someone’s name day, we ask that you please contact the Church Office so that we may correct our records. We extend our prayers to all those celebrating their name day this month and beseech our heavenly Father to grant them many years!
