FOREWORD

Dear Prognosfruit participant,

WAPA, the World Apple and Pear Association, is pleased to provide in this report the 2021 European apple and pear crop estimate. These data have been released during the Prognosfruit 2021 Online Conference, which took place on 5 August 2021.

This report is compiled upon the initiative of the apple and pear working group of COPA-COGECA. The data have been collected with the useful support of the respective representative national producer organisations of the various Member States of the European Union and beyond.

In 2021, the apple production in the EU for the 21 top producing countries contributing to this report is estimated to increase by 10% to 11.735,000 T. This year’s crop is also estimated to be 1% above than the average of 2018-2019-2020. Regarding the main varieties, Golden Delicious increased by 8% to 2.120.000 T, although this still represents a 4% decrease compared to the 3-year average. Gala, the second largest varieties increased by 8% compared to both 2020 and the 3-year average. Idared increased by 9% to 685.000 T, while Red Delicious decreased by 3% to 640.000T. The European apples crop continue its diversification to new varieties.

The EU pear crop for 2021 is estimated to decrease by 28% compared to last year and 27% compared to the 3-year average, falling to 1.604.000 T, the lowest in the last decade. This drop is due to the major decreases in Belgium (-25%), France (-57%), and Italy (-65%) . As a result, in 2021, the production of Conference is estimated to decrease by 18% to 805.000 T, while William BC is projected to half its production to 127.000 T. Rocha is the only variety set to increase its production in 2021 (+36%). Importantly, Abate is falling by 73% to 66.000 T.

This report also provides information regarding the stock trends of the last season.

Besides the information provided by the representative organisations, this report is further completed with additional data of last years’ production in the other EU Member States, as well as in several relevant countries outside the border of the European Union, including the forecasted data for the EU neighbouring countries, China, Mexico, and the USA. The Southern Hemisphere crop forecasts as initially released by WAPA (February 2021) are also presented in a summary format.
