2020 TERM 1 WEEK 4 Dear North Fremantle Community, It is hard to believe that we are already nearly finished Week 4. Thank you to everyone who was able to come to our P&C Welcome Picnic last Friday. Many of us were concerned for the first few minutes that the rain might set in but in the end the weather was perfect. It was a lovely night of conversations, relaxation and sharing. PARENT INFORMATION SESSIONS It was great to see the many parents who attended the parent information meetings across the school. If you were not able to be at the meeting, please contact your classroom teacher for the class handout. Some of this information is the same across the school, other information is classroom specific. We are close to having a full complement of Parent Representatives from each class which is fantastic. If you have not sent in your contact details (slip at the bottom of the parent information note) this would be appreciated so that your Parent Representative can communicate with you during the year. SCHOOL LEADERS We would like to recognise the outstanding effort of the Year 6 students who delivered well-crafted and thoughtful speeches as part of the selection process for leadership roles at North Fremantle Primary School this year. Everyone was very impressed with the quality of the speeches and the students’ willingness to have a go. Throughout all of the speeches we particularly appreciated hearing about the school values and how students are demonstrating these both within and outside of the school. All of our Year 6 students are valuable role models and leaders across the school. Our younger students are continually looking to our senior students for leadership and assistance. A date has been set for our next P&C Busy Bee which will focus on finishing the upgrade to the garden beds up the back and sorting our new servery area. Please mark Saturday 21st March on your calendar and stay tuned for more details about ways that you can be involved on this day.

AC/DC HIGHWAY TO HELL – Sunday 1st March Last newsletter I mentioned that North Fremantle Primary School Community has been invited to be part of the Perth Festival - Highway to Hell, Sunday 1st March. It has been great to see the number of adults who are joining our students for this performance. It is important that all children remain in the care of their parent/carer at all times. The meeting/call time is 4.45pm and our performance is 5.50pm-6.00pm on the grass at 80 Canning Highway, East Fremantle (next to the Pregnancy and Childbirth Centre). Please note that Canning Highway will be closed and parking may be challenging. Please plan accordingly and give yourself time. There will be a number of performers in this area, food stalls at the rainbow containers and ‘The Trucks Passing’ has been advertised from 7.00 – 8.30pm in this area.

In newsletters throughout the year each class will have the opportunity to share their educational journey with the school community. In this fortnight’s edition of the newsletter we will shine the spotlight on Room 7. Our Year 5 and 6 students have had a very busy start to the year. I am very pleased with the way in which they are taking on responsibilities and demonstrating our school values. Thank you to Mrs Thomas and their parents/carers for supporting their successful start to the year.

Thank you for your ongoing support of North Fremantle Primary School.

SPOTLIGHT ON . . . Classrooms

Room 7 Mrs Carolynne Thomas

What a whirlwind start to the year for our wonderful Year 5/6 students. Talk about hitting the ground running. We have had a focus on our HASS Curriculum this term firstly focusing on Civics and Citizenship discussing Australia’s democratic rights, electoral procedures and laws. This led perfectly into our Leadership Elections where students had to prepare a speech to present to their teachers, peers and parents. Students applied a great deal of thought and effort into their speeches taking into account the needs and expectations of voters. We were lucky enough to have the Australian Electoral Commission conduct our Faction Captain voting. They developed a AEC ballot paper, set up polling booths, explained the process of voting and then took ballots away to count based on the preferential system, this giving our students a taste of what it is like to be part of a democracy that allows voting by its citizens.

To follow this Room 7 have been studying Economics and Business in HASS. This links to the Magpie Cafe held today to raise funds for the upcoming Year 6/7 camp at Bickley. Students have been discussing the issues of needs and wants in today’s society and how these have dramatically changed in the past 50 years. They have also been looking at choices and how consumers can influence change and how different groups of people have different needs and wants and make choices based on these. Our Magpie Café used a trybooking site this year and we will be able to use information gathered to look at consumer choice that will influence menu and purchases for the 2021 Magpie Café. Next, we will be looking at Immigration, Australian and Global Citizenship with a visit

from the Red Cross who will run a presentation ‘In Search of Safety’ to build awareness and understanding about people impacted by migration. The program aims to improve critical thinking skills and develop empathy while challenging the common misunderstandings around the movement of people in our world.

This along with our focus on the impact of the recent Australian bushfires, the introduction of Senior School Sports on a Wednesday afternoon and the new Boy’s Club run by our Chaplain are just a few of the great learning activities that our class have been involved in. And guess what, it is only Week 4, Term 1!

Clean Up Australia Schools Day

This Friday the 28th is Clean Up Australia Schools Day and North Fremantle Primary School will once again take part in this event to inspire our students to learn about the impact of rubbish on their local environment while playing an active role in their community.

It's a day when students and teachers work together to clean up an area which is special to us – our school environment. We will be one of over 2,240+ preschools and primary schools throughout Australia working together to make Australian’s aware of the impact of rubbish on our community and country.

Some interesting facts:

17.7 Million+ Australians have donated their time as part of Clean Up Australia over the last 30 years.

35 million hours of volunteer time has been donated to Clean Up activities to benefit our environment.

365 000+ ute loafs of rubbish have been removed as part of Clean Up Australia activities.

Don’t forget you and your family can also participate in Clean Up Australia official day on Sunday the 1st March.
