Popcorn Terminology
Case – How the Popcorn is shipped: A Case holds several Containers from one to twelve. For
Show & Sell, Popcorn must be ordered by the Case.
Commission – Money earned by and kept by the Unit. Commission is up to 35% without Prizes,
OR 33% with Prizes. This must be a unit-wide decision. Units must choose one commission
option for both Show & Sell and Take Order. Please communicate Commission Options clearly
to all members of your Unit.
Container – Individual Popcorn items. For Take Order, Popcorn may be ordered by the
Container.
Delivery Site – Location where Units pick up their Popcorn order. Show & Sell and Take Order
Delivery Sites may be at different locations.
IYOS – Ideal Year of Scouting, or IYOS, is a planning and budgeting process tool.
Wagon Sales – Scouts go door-to-door and sell popcorn. As a sale is made, if the Scout has that
item, they deliver it on the spot.
Show n’ Sell – Sales occur in front of stores and restaurants that have agreed to participate.
Locations should be available to all units in a District and must be within the district boundaries. Units will then sign up for locations and times to sell. The scouts selling will have boxes and bags of popcorn to sell people at their location. Show n’ Sell starts on ?????????
Take Order – can be best described at door-to-door sales of popcorn except the scouts will typically not have any popcorn with them. Scouts will have an order form and will deliver the popcorn about a month later. Checks should ALWAYS be made out to the Unit, not an individual. Take Order starts on July 13th.
Online Sales – Sales are made online through Trails-End.com, the company that produces Boy
Scout popcorn. Each scout, with parental guidance, sets up an online account that friends,
family, and complete strangers can order from. Once the popcorn is ordered, the popcorn is
delivered directly to the person by mail, which makes this the easiest sales your scout could
ever make. Online sales are available year-round. Sales made from Friday, August 1st to
Tuesday, October 28th will be included in individual scout sales towards prizes.
Unit Popcorn Team Task List
1. Attend the Council Popcorn Kickoff!!
2. Obtain the “Ideal Year of Scouting” (IYOS) budget from Unit Committee
The most important step in this process is setting a UNIT and a SCOUT sales goal.
3. Get the Word Out!
Use your unit meetings, newsletters, and websites to let Scouts and parents know the
importance of the Popcorn Sale. Keep them posted about important dates.
4. Create Your Own Unit Incentive Program
In addition to the Prize Program provided by the Trails End, develop your own
Incentive Program. Recognize top selling Scouts and Dens/Patrols. Be creative, maybe
the top selling Scout gets to pie the Cub Master or Den Leader. Have Scouts and
Dens/Patrols report how they are doing at meetings. This will help keep the momentum
going.
5. Plan and run your Unit Popcorn Kickoff
This is a critical step. This is where you ensure everyone has the information they need
for a successful sale, and it gets your Scouts and Parents pumped up. Make this event
fun!
6. Place Unit Show n’ Sell Order and Arrange for Pick Up
Show n’ Sell Orders are placed in the Popcorn System on the Trails End website,
www.trails-end.com. Show & Sell Orders are by the case.
✓ First you must determine when and where your unit is going to sell. Coordinate
with your District Popcorn Kernel for sales locations. If you or someone in
your pack has a new sales location, contact your District Popcorn Kernel.
✓ Next, determine how much Popcorn to order.
✓ Order your Show & Sell Order Popcorn. Place the order on www.trails-
end.com. You will need to set up a login using an email address different than
your son’s Trails-End account.
✓ Arrange for Show & Sell Pick Up at the Delivery Site through your District
Kernel
7. Communicate with your District Kernel and District Executive about any Excess
Show and Sell Product you may have.
✓ We will be limiting returns to the Council to 10% of your original order in
2020. The deadline for returning product will be October 10th. Often, the unit
next door will be able to take your excess product off your hands to limit your
returns. COMMUNICATE WITH US!!!
8. Ensure all Scouts have Take Order Forms
Make sure all Scouts and their Families have Take Order Popcorn Sales Forms,
and that they understand the importance of the Sale.
9. Collect and Consolidate Scouts Take Order Forms and Prize Forms
On your Unit Calendar have a date, time and place for all Scouts to turn in their
Take Order forms and what prizes they want. Consolidate all the Scout Forms
onto a Unit Master Order Form.
10. Place Unit Take Order
Take Order orders are placed in the Popcorn System on the Trails End
website, www.trails-end.com. Take Order orders are by the case and/or
container. Be sure to deduct any product left over from Show n’ Sell from
your order.
11. Place Unit Prize Order
If you will be participating in the prize program, we will be using the Amazon Gift Card program through Trails-End Exclusively this year. More information on the Gift Card Program will follow.
12. Arrange for Pick Up of Your Unit Take Order from the District Distribution
Location, and Distribute to Scouts
Sign up for a pick up time to receive your product through your District Kernel.
Vehicle Load Guidelines
Mid-Size Car…….20 Cases
Mid-Size SUV….. 40 Cases
Mini-Van…………60 Cases
Large SUV……….70 Cases
Arrange for a time and place for distribution to your Scouts as quickly after the
Popcorn is picked up as possible. The fewer times the Popcorn is moved, the less
the chance of damage. Do not store the popcorn in a hot location.
13. Collect all Checks and Cash from Your Scouts
Arrange for a time and location to collect the Scouts money and checks. All Checks
should be made out to the Unit (i.e. Pack 999, NOT the Scout or Parent). Make sure this
date is on your Unit Popcorn Calendar.
14. Payment to Council (For Show & Sell and Take Order)
Units SHOULD pay for their Unit Popcorn (Show and Sell and Take Order) with a Unit Check at the Scout Office by the deadline. Payment may be made early. Payment is required in full before a prize order may be placed. Any balance left from your units 2019 sale will carry over to the 2020 invoice. Contact the Scout Office if you have questions.
15. Trails End $2,500 Sales Scholarship
Scholarship Retirement
