January 2020

2019 was a great year for Intrinsic Introductions. Our Rudbeckia x ‘American Gold Rush’ won the All American Selection award just in time to meet the growing supply chain including, four tissue culture labs and URC availability from Darwin Perennials. In 2020 we will begin to trial another Rudbeckia with yellow flowers and begin to license Rudbeckia x ‘Glitters like Gold’ in July and at the same time our 2008 intro Polemonium x ‘Heaven Scent’ will become our fifth Proven Winners perennial.

Our top selling introductions were Rudbeckia x ‘American Gold Rush’, Allium x ‘Windy City’, Andropogon gerardii ‘Blackhawks’ and ‘Red October’, and Penstemon digitalis ‘Pocahontas’ which sold out for the first time since we introduced it in 2012 and will be featured on QVC along with Rudbeckia x ‘American Gold Rush’, which is really exciting.

As far as new Introductions, 2020 will be a reserved year as we focus on supply chain for already current intros. Amsonia x ‘Bases Loaded’ is our most refined halfway type foliage yet. Extra dark green foliage shows off the heavy clusters of light blue on 18-24” stems. Reserved growth keeps these 30” plus plants wider than tall. And we have lot more Amsonia hits on deck where that came from. Bouteloua gracilis ‘Honey Blonde’ PPAF is a larger Grama grass selected for uniform growth, good vigor and upright stems standing up to winter. Dianthus x ‘Fuchsia Fire’ PPAF is the first plant introduction from breeder Jake Letmanski who I’ve been lucky enough to mentor since he joined our team in 2017 at 15 years old. This has all the great attributes of ‘Firewitch’ but is half the size and has Kahori in its background which helps its sporadic rebloom. Matting silver plants spread instead of opening up in the middle. A portion of the royalty will go to Jake as he pursues horticulture in college fall of 2020. Eupatorium x ‘Polished Brass’ is an absolute pollinator and butterfly magnet. The 4’ tall hybrid plants emerge with glossy bronze red foliage and bloom like a cloud in August with creamy white flowers. For the future we have Joe pye weed with purple foliage.

After 19 years breeding Pennisetum ‘Love and Rockets’ is a dwarf red flowering fountain grass close in size and stature to ‘Hameln’. It combines nicely with the dark green foliage with red tips. ‘Yellow Ribbons’ our 2019 intro looked great at every trial site I saw it in. Next year we will introduce a broad leaved form with yellow foliage. Think ‘All Gold’ for full sun. Salvia nemorosa ‘Sixteen Candles’ PPAF has less branched upright flowers. The pink color flowers gets backed up by purple and violet calyxs and stems adding depth and contrast. Sedum album ‘Nerds’ is a great groundcover and has interesting orange to russet red color in winter into spring. Sedum sexangulare ‘Yellowstone’ PPAF is a more robust and bright improvement on ‘Golddigger’. I’m pleased Sedum x ‘Pride and Joy’ PPAF will become our fourth Proven Winners perennial. It’s a deeper pink sport of ‘Pure Joy’ and has the same great dome shaped habit, 1’ tall by 15-20” wide. Finally, Veronicastrum virginicum ‘Queen of Diamonds’ was selected for extra clean, dark green foliage. After the soft pink flowers in late summer, the upright 4’ plants stand chocolate brown all winter long.

Our 6th annual ornamental Grasses day, Friday September 18th, 2020. Come see our ornamental grasses at their peak.

Brent Horvath- Breeder

p Our Breeding Philosophy POur plants are bred and selected in the tough conditions of the Midwest with hot humid summers and cold wet winters. We strive to breed plants not as a means,

but with an end in mind. Our goals are simple- improved, durable, ornamental garden plants for our own climate and the rest of the world! Our plants are bred to stand the test of time, if

they don’t survive or thrive in the garden why bother.
