• Major donors: SPCA International, Humane Society International, Marian’s Dream Foundation, Dell YourCause, ISAR Online, Charles Schwab, Mrs. Orquidea, Athen’s Pizza and MBE-Coronado. James Gunn, the American writer, actor and filmmaker donated $1,000 in memory of his beloved pet Wesley Von Spears. We lost several significant donors, however, the bulk is made up by all the small donations that come through our bank account and PayPal which compensated for lower contributions collected as many lost their jobs but still wanted to sterilize their pet.

• Income from the government is down significantly. This is attributed to the new mayor of the Municipality of Panama. With the former mayor, over 5,000 animals were sterilized annually in high-risk low-income areas. In 2020, we had three offsite spay clinics sponsored by the Junta Comunal of Don Bosco, El Aradoand Ciri Arriba.

• In 2013, we partnered with ICAM, the International Coalition for the Management of Companion Animals based in England. The coalition was formed in 2006 as a discussion forum on global cat and dog management issues and is a registered charity (CIO Association) with the Charity Commission for England and Wales (charity number 1192921).

The motivation for partnering with ICAM is simple, Spay/Panama needed to know if the work of massive sterilization was making a change/difference for animal welfare. We use the tool designed by ICAM to monitor the population of dogs that roam freely (with and without guardian) in Panama.

The surveys were conducted from 2013 to 2019. It was not conducted in 2020 because the Mayor's Office stopped activating the agreement in July 2019 and due to the pandemic and quarantine initiated in March 2020. ICAM's analysis of the data submitted annually by Spay/Panama indicates a 9.2% annual reduction in roaming animals during those years.

Unfortunately, we feel that all the advancements in Pacora, 24 de Diciembre, Las Mañanitas, Alcalde Diaz, among others has been lost.

• Due to the pandemic surgical supplies became scarce and were considerably higher, many supplies increased 300%.

• The University of Nottingham performed a study identifying priorities for research into the impact of canine surgical sterilization programs on free-roaming dog population; the study was sponsored by the Dogs Trust Foundation. A total of 152 participants from 59 countries completed one or more stages of the study. Spay/Panama was a participant. The number one ranking question was “In order to affect the size of a dog population, what proportion of the population needs to be sterilized and over what time period?”

With great satisfaction and under the mentoring of Dr. Isis Johnson-Brown and Dr. Marvin Mackey, creator of the Quick Spay Method; it was determined that the 70% rule is the appropriate proportion of the population that needs to be sterilized. For offsite spay clinics, the organizers are asked for their best guesstimate of the animal census. Reason why our clinics are massive.

• Before the pandemic, the daily staff was 9 vets and about 15 volunteers. To avoid a crowd, the staff was split to three vets and 6 volunteers daily.

• Three vets and three volunteers tested positive for COVID-19 in November and December with no further cases. The six have reintegrated the work force.

• A new Stateside non-profit organization was formed, Spay/Global and Spay/Panama is honored to be part of the board.

• Spay/Panama-Pedasi sterilized 177 animals. Spay/Panama-Chiriqui spayed 388 animals. Spay/Panama-Chitre operated 439 animals. These chapters were closed for the most part in 2020.

• Principales donantes: SPCA International, Humane Society International, Marian’s Dream Foundation, Dell YourCause, ISAR Online, Charles Schwab, Sra. Orquidea, Athen’s Pizza y MBE-Coronado. James Gunn, el escritor, actor y director estadounidense donó $ 1,000 en memoria de su amada mascota Wesley Von Spears. Perdimos varios donantes importantes, pero la mayor parte de las donaciones están compuesta por todas esas pequeñas donaciones que llegan a través de nuestra cuenta bancaria y PayPal que compensaron las contribuciones más bajas recaudadas ya que muchos perdieron sus trabajos pero aún querían esterilizar a su mascota.

• Los ingresos del gobierno se redujeron significativamente. Esto se atribuye al nuevo alcalde del Municipio de Panamá. Con el alcalde anterior, más de 5,000 animales fueron esterilizados anualmente en áreas de alto riesgo y bajos ingresos. En 2020, tuvimos tres jornadas de esterilización patrocinadas por la Junta Comunal de Don Bosco, El Arado y Ciri Arriba.

• En 2013, nos asociamos con ICAM, la Coalición Internacional para el Manejo de Animales de Compañía con sede en Inglaterra. La coalición se formó en 2006 como un foro de discusión sobre cuestiones globales de manejo de perros y gatos y es una organización benéfica registrada (Asociación CIO) con la Comisión de Caridad para Inglaterra y Gales (número de organización benéfica 1192921).

La motivación para asociarse con ICAM es simple, Spay/Panamá necesitaba saber si el trabajo de esterilización masiva estaba logrando un cambio en el bienestar animal. Utilizamos la herramienta diseñada por ICAM para monitorear la población de perros que deambulan libremente (con guardián y sin guardián) en Panamá.

Las encuestas se realizaron de 2013 a 2019. No se realizó en 2020 porque la Alcaldía dejó de activar el acuerdo en julio de 2019 y debido a la pandemia y cuarentena iniciada en marzo de 2020. El análisis de ICAM de los datos presentados anualmente por Spay/Panamá indica una reducción anual del 9.2% en animales deambulantes durante esos años.

Lamentablemente sentimos que se ha perdido todo el trabajo realizado en Pacora, 24 de Diciembre, Las Mañanitas, Alcalde Díaz, entre otros.

• Debido a la pandemia, los suministros quirúrgicos escasearon y subieron de precio considerablemente, muchos aumentaron un 300%.

• La Universidad de Nottingham realizó un estudio para identificar las prioridades de investigación sobre el impacto de los programas de esterilización quirúrgica canina en la población de perros que deambulan libremente; el estudio fue patrocinado por la Dogs Trust Foundation. Un total de 152 participantes de 59 países completaron una o más etapas del estudio. Spay/Panamá fue un participante. La pregunta de clasificación número uno fue "Para afectar el tamaño de una población de perros, ¿qué proporción de la población necesita ser esterilizada y durante qué período de tiempo?”.

Con gran satisfacción y bajo la tutoría de la Dra. Isis Johnson-Brown y el Dr. Marvin Mackey, creador del Método Quick Spay, se determinó que el 70% de la población necesita ser esterilizada. Para las clínicas de esterilización fuera de las instalaciones, se solicita a los organizadores su mejor estimación del censo de animales. Razón por la que nuestras clínicas son masivas.

• Antes de la pandemia, el personal diario era de 9 veterinarios y aproximadamente 15 voluntarios. Para evitar una aglomeración, el personal se dividió en tres veterinarios y 6 voluntarios diariamente.

• Tres veterinarios y tres voluntarios dieron positivo por COVID-19 en noviembre y diciembre sin más casos. Los seis se han reintegrado a la fuerza laboral.

• Se formó una nueva ONG Spay/Global en los Estados Unidos y Spay/Panamá se siente honrada de ser parte de su junta directiva.

• Spay/Panamá-Pedasí esterilizó 177 animales. Spay/Panamá-Chiriquí esterilizó 388 animales. Spay/Panamá-Chitré operó 439 animales. Estos capítulos estuvieron cerrados en su mayor parte en 2020.
