REACHING IN, REACHING OUT, REACHING GOD

Fr. Jim’s Jottings One of the issues confronting the church today is the shortage of vocations to the priesthood. It is a growing challenge to be able to assign a priest to pastor our parishes. Because of this shortage, a

number of priests are assigned to multiple parishes. Some priests who had hoped to retire are being asked to “help out” every weekend. And our Diocese has asked and received help from other Dioceses in India, Africa, Philippines etc. Bishop Ricken has asked all of us to pray for more young men to answer God’s call to serve the Church as priests. The hope is that by 2025 we will have 30 seminarians studying for the priesthood. And our prayer is that this will be the norm for maintaining sufficient priests to staff our parishes. Besides praying, there is a need for financial help for our seminarians. This past week every parishioner should have received a letter and envelope asking for your help. Please be generous with our Annual Seminarian Collection. This weekend is the kick off of the 15th year of this collection. Your donation provides tuition, room and board, insurance, a small stipend for our seminarians and will support the Vocation Office’s efforts to call forth more candidates. The total annual cost for our 14 seminarians is around $1,000,000. As friends and followers of Jesus, we support each other. Thank you for your generosity!

CHURCH RENOVATIONS…CONTINUING Our terrazzo and tile Church floors have come back to life. Thank you for accommodating our schedule for the past two weeks of no Masses. You have been very helpful in going along with the inconveniences. This weekend we get back to our “normal” Mass schedule.

Sat (4:00 pm) and Sun (8:00 am & 10:00 am). During the week we have Mass at 12:05 pm on Mon, Tues, & Fri. Then next weekend (Aug 8/9) we go back to our “normal-normal” weekend Masses which are Sat (4:00 pm) and Sun (8:00 am, 10:00 am, & 6:30 pm). Please spread the word to friends and other parishioners that we are back to our usual weekend schedule. We begin to put in the new sanctuary platform in the week of August 10th. And the new carpeting will be installed the week of August 17th. The final stage is re-installing the pews. Keep praying that we can complete that in early September.

Bishop’s Annual Appeal…We Made It! Thank you to everyone who responded to this year’s Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Last week we met our goal of $77,175 with two more contributions totaling $77,274. You did it in spite of the covid-19 and even after our successful “one by One” campaign. Thank you again. May God reward your generosity!

Faith Formation Update The School Year is creeping up on us. Registration forms for Faith Formation Classes are available on the St. Joseph Parish Website under the Education Tab. Please contact Dana with questions at 920-738-7413 or email her at: [email protected].

Thank you!

A Story of Compassion & Generosity This should make you proud of St Joe’s! We received this thank you letter from Molly (Fargo, ND) “It was 2 weeks ago when my father

had a heart attack, pneumonia and a blood infection. There were no beds in Stevens Point, the community he called home. The doctors were forced to send him by ambulance to Appleton, WI. I drove to Appleton from where I live in Fargo, ND to be with him, but after a few days, once he was stable and in “good hands” at the hospital I had to return to Fargo to work. Once Dad was on his way to recovery; he got chilled and even though they tried to keep him covered in blankets—his only wish was for a warm flannel shirt. He said he was shivering, and that he couldn’t get warm. He was scared and alone, and he was in tears. I was 10 hours away. We have no family or friends anywhere near the Appleton Community. I felt helpless. Then I thought of how my church here in Fargo often reaches out into the community to help people in need, and I opened the internet and searched for Catholic Churches in Appleton. The first thing I saw was St Joseph’s. It was a “God” moment, because my brother and I used to go to St Joseph’s in Stevens Point together when we were kids. My brother died 17 years ago, but he “guided me” to your phone number. You found a warm cozy shirt for Dad. You found a volunteer to take it to St Elizabeth’s Hospital. You saved a man from pain and sadness and loneliness and from the cold. God worked through you to help my Dad. I can’t even begin to tell you how much that shirt, that act of kindness meant to him, and to me. Thank you to the person who answered my phone call. Thank you to the person who brought him the shirt. Thank you very much!”

Can the Parish Help?

These are difficult days for some families in trying to make ends meet. Some have lost their job or have had their hours cut back. If St Joe’s can help in some way, please call the Parish Office and let us talk with you.

Non-Raffle Raffle Thank you to those who have already returned their “Non-Raffle Raffle” donation. It continues to be impressive to see the quick and generous response from so many. So far we have received $22,321! If you can, we are asking parishioners to return the raffle envelope with a donation of $35 or more. This raffle is very helpful in getting us through the summer months and especially as our contributions have slipped with the coronavirus. Again, thanks!

Church Chuckle A bored young man decided life would be more fun if he had a pet. So he went to the pet store and told the owner he wanted to

buy an unusual pet. After some discussion, he bought a talking centipede, (100-legged bug), which came in a little white box to use as his house. He took the box home, found a good spot for it, and decided he would start off by taking his new pet to church with him. So he asked the centipede in the box, "Would you like to go to church with me today? We’ll have a good time." But there was no answer from his new pet. This bothered him a bit, but he waited a few minutes and then asked again, "How about going to church with me and receive blessings?" But again, there was no answer from his new friend and pet. So he waited a few minutes more, thinking about the situation, and then decided to invite the centipede one last time. This time he put his face up against the centipede's house and shouted, "Hey, in there! Would you like to go to church with me and learn about God?" This time, a little voice came out of the box, "I heard you the first time! I'm putting on my shoes!"
