Dear Friends,

My name is Natalie Watkins and on behalf of my husband, Jeff, and our children, Owen and Celia, we are honored to be the

chairs for the 2020-2021 Annual Giving campaign. We are parishioners at Our Lady of the Visitation parish and have been

members of the Mary of Nazareth School community for nine years.

In the summer of 2011, my husband and I were making the stressful decision of where to send our first child to school. Neither of us

grew up in Maryland so we did not have any experience with schools in the area. So we began the process of taking school tours.

We toured our local elementary school and have to admit that we were impressed with what the school could offer. The following

day we had a tour scheduled at Mary of Nazareth. From the minute we stepped through those doors, we felt welcomed and knew

this was a special place. We were so blown away by the feeling we had that we immediately knew Owen was going to be a Mary

of Nazareth Mustang! Fast forward to March of 2020. Owen was in 8th grade and looking forward to wrapping up his MoN

career as all the classes had done in the years before him. There was so much to look forward to! When Owen came home from

school on March 12th, he never imagined that would be the last time he would walk out of Mary of Nazareth as a student. He did

not say “good-bye” to his friends and teachers knowing he would not see them again before he ended his 8th grade year in June.

As the days and months went on, it was very apparent that all of the excitement of the last few weeks of 8th grade was not going

to become a reality for Owen and his classmates; he would not have the chance for his official “good-bye”.

During these most challenging times, the love and spirit of the Mary of Nazareth community has shone through and proved yet

again why that decision we made so many years ago was the correct one. Despite the obstacles, the Mary of Nazareth

administrators and teachers made Owen and his entire 8th grade class feel special throughout the graduation events in early

June. From a unique 8th grade car parade to the “Banquet” night and then finally Graduation – Mary of Nazareth had proved yet

again why this is such a special place to educate and develop our children in order to prepare them for the next phase of life.

As wonderful as our teachers, administrators and facilities are, this school would not be complete without the support of all the

families that are currently reading this letter that provides financial support through the Annual Giving campaign. Our Annual

Giving Campaign funds directly support the school’s operating budget, staff development and compensation, instructional

materials, maintenance of our beautiful campus which our children are enjoying fully this year, and most importantly these days,

educational technology. The staff is doing an amazing job navigating this new school environment, the leadership team continues

to provide direction that is sound and based on science, and I am confident Mary of Nazareth will be able to navigate our

community through more challenging days to come, but we need your support!

As a community we also realize that financial hardship during these times is a reality for many families. As you can see Mary of

Nazareth has had a lasting impact on our family and we are honored to give back to our school especially at this time. More than

ever we need to do what we can to help ensure that Mary of Nazareth School can continue to educate, grow, and nurture our

children whether within the physical walls of the school or virtually.

When we look back at the past 9 years at Mary of Nazareth, one word comes to mind: Gratitude. And with a grateful heart we

are honored to be part of this community. In these trying times that our world is experiencing, it shows how important it is for this

community to continue to rally around Mary of Nazareth to ensure that it is well positioned to continue to deliver the education

and support that will allow our children to succeed in the future.

To the parents, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of Mary ofNazareth School:

Last year, our Annual Giving theme was “There is No Placelike MoN”.  If you are a returning family or new to ourcommunity, you have had the opportunity to witness this foryourselves, especially reflected in our school's response tothe COVID-19 pandemic.  Upon the closure of schools inMarch, our teachers, administrators and staff jumped intoaction and delivered distance learning from day one ofquarantine.  Since then, they have worked non-stop to makesure Mary of Nazareth is prepared to meet all the challengesCOVID-19 may put in front of us as we move forward into anew school year.  Teacher readiness, the continuum ofstudent learning, and the planning from the administrationand the Board of Directors has solidified my confidence thatwe will be prepared for whatever comes our way this Fall. 

This past Spring, our community came together and raisedover $30,000 specifically for COVID-19 relief as well as over$95,000 towards our Annual Giving Campaign.  Thegenerosity of our families and their commitment to ourschool, even during these extraordinary times, has made merealize how blessed I am to be a part of the Mary ofNazareth School community.  The Annual Giving Campaigndirectly impacts our ability to offer competitive faculty andstaff compensation, maintain low student to teacher ratios,provide small-group instruction in math and reading, andinvest in the latest educational technology.  The realizationof these goals have been possible because of yourunwavering support.

Participation in the Annual Giving Campaign is ademonstration of your commitment to the continued successof Mary of Nazareth School. This year, we hope that you willagain be generous in your support of the Annual GivingCampaign. Please help us meet our goal of achieving 100%participation in our campaign so we can continue to offer arigorous, innovative, and distinctively Catholic educationalexperience for our children. Karen Vassallo has been an effective, dedicated, and productive

two-term Mary of Nazareth School board member. During her

leadership, our school published two three year strategic plans

and implemented one. Her expertise in strategic planning has

led to tremendous growth in our academic programs and facility

improvements. Karen was also an active parent volunteer while

her kids attended MoN. She is a true steward and leader: always

generous with her time, talent, and treasure.

Empire Financial Services Inc. in Rockville, Maryland has provided outstanding service

to Mary of Nazareth School. Empire Financial Inc. has sponsored many community

events such as our Annual Benefit Gala and HSA events. Owner, Louis Farago, has

generously donated his time to school events. Mr. Farago is pleasant to work with and is

always willing to help in whatever manner is needed. Our school community sincerely

appreciates the generous support we receive from Empire Financial Services Inc.

2019-2020 CBN Grant

I M P R O V I N G S A F E T Y A T M O N

For the 2019-2020 school year, we will be using this grant to enhance safety and security

at Mary of Nazareth. Each classroom will now have lock down shades, which will

blackout the windows during a lock down event. We are purchasing more walkie talkies

that will be compatible with our current ones. This will allow for increase

communication without relying on a cell tower and in case, our PA system is inoperable/

inaccessible.

Maria Sofia

Maria was elected as the new Chairman of the Maryland Young

Republicans this past year - an organization that needed to be revamped.

With her leadership, the organization was voted as the 2019 Red Maryland

Award Winner for the Conservative Organization of the Year. This is

certainly a great accomplishment! Further, Maria was nominated for the

2019 Red Maryland Award for Conservative of the Year which is an award

that in the past was won by our MD Governor, Larry Hogan. This year,

Maria was a nominee along with two MD Senators , a MD Congressman,

and Governor Larry Hogan.

Alumni Spotlight

Peter Rosa

CLASS OF 2009

Peter attended St. John’s College High School where he was a member of the JROTC

program and the football team. After graduating, he attended the Catholic University of

America for his undergraduate studies where he majored in Psychology and received his

Bachelor of Art’s degree. Peter was also a four-year collegiate student-athlete where he

was the starting kicker for the football team. After completing his undergraduate studies,

he attend New York Chiropractic College and is currently completing his clinical rotation

in Long Island, New York. This coming December, Peter will be receiving his doctorate

degree and is looking forward to returning to Maryland to work alongside my father in an

integrative medicine practice. Peter attributes the Mary of Nazareth community for

shaping who he is today. Specifically, he thanks Mrs. Luongo and the resource

department which supported him in building foundational learning strategies and study

habits that allowed him to manage and support his learning disability. Mary of Nazareth

taught him time management, how to build relationships with peers and teachers, and

most importantly how to trust God through each stage of his life. Peter feels extremely

fortunate to have had the opportunity to receive a Catholic education that has helped him

build a close relationship with God. His heart and soul is filled with gratitude to Mary of

Nazareth for giving him life long friendships, timeless mentors, and the foundation for

success.
