Spiritual watchfulness and alertness. “Watch, there-fore, for
you do not know what hour your Lord is coming” (Matthew 24:42)
Every year (for the past three years), I celebrate the Divine
Liturgy for the feast of St. Basil - which is on January 1 -
completely in Greek. It's not an easy task, I start practicing on
the day after Thanksgiving so I'm ready. But why make the effort? I
want to tell you, in the hopes that you will make the effort to
attend.
Remember that we celebrate the Divine Liturgy of St. John
Chrysostom almost all the time. The only time we celebrate the
Liturgy of St. Basil (basically) is on the Sundays of Lent. St.
Basil's Liturgy is longer than St. John's, mostly because the
prayers of the priest are different - more descriptive, poetic, and
intense. And longer! Consequently, on the Sundays of Lent I don't
do any of the prayers in Greek. It's too much for most people, and
very few have any idea what the words mean. And the words are the
point! So I do almost the whole liturgy in English on the Sundays
in Lent.
But there are some who can tell what's being said in Greek, and
there is a day when you're going to hear every single word - on the
feast of St. Basil, January 1!
I love the prayers of the Basil Liturgy. You've heard me talk
about my objections to some English translations, how the real
meaning is sometimes obscured. This is the case with the Basil
Liturgy in several parts. I'll mention two.
There is a line in the long prayer after the "Holy, holy, holy,
Lord of Sabaoth," that says: νεκρωθέντα τε τοῖς οἰκείοις αὐτοῦ
παραπτώμασιν. This is translated "becoming subject to death through
his own transgressions." The first word, νεκρωθέντα, means "to make
dead." The last, παραπτώμασιν, is "through (or, "in")
transgressions." But all English translations leave the middle
words untranslated. What do they say? οἰκείοις means "household,"
and "τοῖς" is a dative article, so it makes "household" into the
indirect object of the verb. Since the sentence is describing the
disobedience of Adam, specifically, how he was tricked by the
serpent, those middle words refer to us. You and me. They say that
Adam was made dead by his transgressions, and he passed that
process - being tricked by the devil and subject to death because
of it - onto us.
When I hear that, I say to myself: don't blame Adam, Fr. David.
You do the same thing he did every single day.
Secondly, in Greek, the difference between a present imperative
and an aorist imperative adds meaning to a sentence, a difference
which is very awkward to translate. The present indicates
continuing action and the aorist indicates a one time command. With
this in mind, the phrase Τοῦτο ποιεῖτε εἰς τὴν ἐμὴν ἀνάμνησιν (at
the sanctification of the wine) is not simply "do this in
remembrance of me," but "do this continually in remembrance of
me."
We all need to hear this. Communion is something that must be
prepared for and received often, often, often.
Come to Church on January 1, bless the New Year with prayer and
worship, with the beautiful original language of St. Basil's Divine
Liturgy. Your affectionate servant, Father David

P R E S I D E N T ’S M E S S A G E
Dear Parish, As we enter the new year we are all hoping that the
vaccines will break the back of COVID 19. Seeing the end to the
pandemic based on what the "experts" say, however, is really very
hard to do. There are, at least as of this writing, no reliable
estimates as to when the vaccine will be available to all.
Furthermore, many people appear to be wary of rushing to get into
the vaccine line. While I am optimistic that COVID will be
vanquished in 2021, the uncertainty of when "normal" life begins
makes it very difficult for the Parish Council to determine how to
operationally and financially plan for the year 2021. The Festival
is our largest social gathering event and revenue generator and we
all want to have a "normal" festival this year. We (as all of you)
will be monitoring the situation very carefully. We are fortunate
to have medical expertise on the council to whom we turn for calm
and systematic interpretation of the archdiocese and public health
directives. As we diligently focus on ensuring the continued health
and safety of all our parishioners, we must also focus on the
financial "health" of the parish. All of which brings me to the
Carry Us Across Campaign. First, the parish council thanks all of
you who have contributed to this effort. We appreciate every
donation. And we understand that these are difficult times, with
many of you allocating resources to family, friends, and the
community at large who are in serious need. St Sophia's is only one
of many worthy institutions that are asking for your support. Our
campaign is going well, but we have a way to go to reach our goal.
With these uncertain times, a strong balance sheet not dependent on
Festival revenue is necessary. The Festival may, after all, have to
be canceled again. We are planning for the worst and hoping for the
best. Hope, however, is not a plan. Given this difficult
environment, your parish council is doing its best to make sure
that this pandemic does not seriously weaken us financially. This
is a duty which we take very seriously and, again, we thank all who
have stepped up to help us fulfill that duty. For those who have
yet to contribute, donations to the Carry Us Across Campaign will
be accepted until January 31, 2021. We pray that COVID abates to
the point where more of you will feel safe and comfortable
returning to church services. But, of course, each in his or her
own time. Meanwhile we will continue our efforts to protect those
who are coming to church. As we enter the new year, the parish
council prays that all remain safe and well. From the Parish
Council, Happy New Year to all.
Yours in Christ, Peter Manolakos Parish Council President

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
Hope everyone had a safe and joyous Christmas holiday. Going
into 2021, we are all looking forward to a more healthy and happy
New Year. Sunday School will continue with our current program of
our monthly children sermons and associated activities. For
January, we are scheduling our Children’s sermon on January 17th.
Father David will focus the children’s sermon on the Samaritan
woman who Jesus met at the well. Samaritans lived in Samaria which
was a region north of Jerusalem between Judea and Galilee. The
Samaritans were a mixed race and traditional enemies of the Jewish
people. While they worshipped the God of Israel they were
different.
Happy to see the on-line attendance of these sermons as well as
for the families who do come and participate at church. Activities
to follow the sermon. I will also be following up with 7-12 grade
students regarding the Saint John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival. I
will first check with the Metropolis to see if we will be moving
forward with the program.
In the meantime, I encourage new families and/or families with
pre-school children, if you have not registered for Sunday School
please reach out to me. In addition, I welcome any suggestions or
ideas on how we can improve on our religious education program.
Yours in Christ, Liz Steinberg (315) 447-4445

AHEPA News Chapter #37 ~ Syracuse, NY
Greetings and a Happy New Year to all and with the vaccine and
blessings of our Lord, 2021 will be a better year for all mankind.
We mourn the passing of two more AHEPAN Brothers in 2020, Dr. Fotis
Poulos and Chris Lemonides, life members of our AHEPA Chapter. May
their memory be eternal. When we lose someone, it is sad and tough
but their contributions remain eternally in our memory. The parish
council and our local AHEPA 37 Chapter have formed the Bicentennial
Committee, which includes non AHEPA parishioners, for the upcoming
200 Year Anniversary of Hellenic/Greek Independence Day. The
meetings will be every Saturday at 2:00 pm by Zoom App. We need you
to volunteer to help to make it a success. If you would like to
participate or just listen to our meetings, all we need is your
name and email address and we will be glad to send you an
invitation by email. You may contact:
