All Welcome.

On Sunday 21 September collect your

Parish Community Novena Prayer card for

our Parish Community Dedication.

Last Sunday we celebrated the conirmation of over 70 young

members of our community. Both ceremonies were prayerful

and joyful and in my 37 years of being a priest were amongst

the best experiences. I hope this was the same for all those

involved. We had many visiting sponsors and family

members from all over Australia. I have been on annual leave

and this was a wonderful occasion to return to and be part of.

I thank all those involved in the preparation and celebration.

I pray the young people will be enriched by this spiritual

occasion and be impowered to take their place in the Church

community and contribute to the life of this community using

the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Retired Bishop of Wollongong

Peter Ingham through his words and gestures was

inspirational. We thank him for his presence and generosity.

It is great to be back home. Thank you to Fr Denis and the

parish staff for all they did while I was away.

The Gospel this weekend is very demanding. It is about

discipleship and the priorities in our lives. Nothing is more

important than our relationship with God. Where our heart is

there is our God. We can all become caught up with so many

things that our priorities become skewed and the least

important things become the most important to us. We need

to have perspective in our lives and this perspective needs to

be God’s perspective. If you were God looking at our lives

what would be most important? What we need is wisdom

and this comes from God. The Holy Spirit is given to us to

help us discern. We need to take our big and little decisions

to God invoking the Holy Spirit, the spirit of Wisdom to

inform our relection and our decision making. Our earthly

perspective needs to be informed by the heavenly

perspective.

We need to develop and extend our spiritual lives so that

they can inform our thoughts and actions. Prayer and

spiritual readings help us inform our minds and hearts. I

always include in my reading some spiritual texts as well as

the scriptures – and I always have a novel or two on the go at

the same time. With daily prayers, some thoughtful reading

and relecting on life experience we can live a thoughtful and

informed life in the midst of all the busyness. Many people

ind podcast a great way to inform themselves and to help

them keep some perspective in daily life.

The Gospel acclamation invites God into the midst of our

lives “Let your face shine upon your servant; and teach me

your laws.” Ps 119;135.

I believe in God,

the Father almighty,

Creator of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our

Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was cruciied, died and was buried;

he descended into hell;

on the third day he rose again from

the dead;

he ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of God

the Father almighty;

from there he will come to judge the

living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and life everlasting.

Amen.

Australia marks Child Protection Sunday, on

which we pray for those who have been

We recognise the harm done by priests,

the Catholic Church and its ministries the

Ever generous God,

You inspired Saint Mary MacKillop

to live her life faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ,

and to be constant in bringing hope and encouragement

to those who were disheartened, lonely, sick or needy.

With conidence in Your generous providence

we join with Saint Mary MacKillop

and ask that You grant our request for [name]

We ask that our faith and hope be ired afresh

by the Holy Spirit so that we too, like

Mary MacKillop, may live with courage, trust and

openness. Ever generous God hear our prayer.

We ask this through Jesus Christ. Amen

Second Reading: Pope St Leo the Great (- 461) Leo was born in Etruria and became Pope in 440. He was a true shepherd and father of souls. He constantly strove to keep the faith whole and strenuously defended the unity of the Church. He repelled the invasions of the barbarians or alleviated their effects, famously persuading Attila the Hun not to march on Rome in 452, and preventing the invading Vandals from massacring the population in 455. Leo left many doctrinal and spiritual writings behind and a number of them are included in the Office of Readings to this day. He died in 461.
