Michelle and I attended the Skijor event on February 23. It was originally scheduled for February 2. However there was 0 snow. Feb 16 was to be the new date. Too cold so it was rescheduled again, February 23. Blowing snow and -19 temperatures made us wonder if they were crazy?! But hey we are Canadians! The 2 hour drive was pretty sketchy for the first 1/2!Getting there @ 10:00 am was plenty early. Or so it seemed? Parking, saddling, getting waiver signed among other things and before I knew it, we were up. The obstacle course was first event. We managed to get through it. The veteran riders - horses made it look easy. Next up , the relay, 200 yards up, switch skier and 200 yards back. Sounds easy! It’s not won at the first half, but the exchange! Lesson learned!. Sprint— 200 yards straight away! Piece of cake. Right!? It was going great until an easy boot boot flew off the horse beside me and hit my horse!!! He jumped straight sideways and said WOW did you see that? Last was the long jump. 200 yards run then longest jump wins. After watching others, there’s quite the strategy. My skier did great! But we saw how it could be better. Strategy! The sun came out. So did a couple thousand spectators. Great event!I was preparing Sissy my mule. However she twisted her ankle and had to be sidelined. Was finally healed, but had no endurance. I would have loved to bring her. But it would not have been fair to her.
If you and your long ears might be interested we need to know ASAP
Northlands of Edmonton has extended an invitation to the Alberta Donkey and Mule Club, to come and celebrate their 30th Anniversary at K Days, July 22,23, 2019. The Parade is July 19. All members who have a Special Performance or Demonstration are invited. All members who would like to participate in Show Classes are invited. Stalls, shavings and parking are complimentary. Offsets for travel and accommodations are provided. The organizers require commitment early in 2019, for this invitation to be arranged and confirmed , if you think you and your long ears would be interested This invitation would provide a second show for members to participate at in 2019, with their Long Ears. The Show would be mixed with Demos that our members excel at. The theme behind this would be to involve entertainment for the spectators. A tremendous resource for knowledge, technique, equipment, services and shopping. The club encourages members to take advantage of the resources at this Trade Fair, Training Expertise, Equine Awareness , biggest in Western Canada If you would like to participate in a Demo, driving, riding, or in hand. Last year we had many people stop to see our animals just because they had never seen a donkey or mule in person. Can you can put in a shift or two in the booth, let us know, people love to stop and speak with owners of Long ears.As in the past, the club covers, travel, parking, stalling and your admission
at the Mane Event , there is the availability to ride with a Trainer. So if you are coming up and interested in helping with club demo, you might also consider one of the many 1 hour clinics available (under clinics on the Mane event home page)
