CORE: ENGLISH

Studies in English aim to develop and extend students’ language competencies in reading, writing, speaking and listening. At this level, students are beginning to explore and respond to more complex ideas and issues through reading and viewing a wide range of texts. Students study the effect of audience and purpose on texts and start to apply this knowledge when constructing appropriate written and spoken texts of their own. Some emphasis is also placed on the development of skills and work habits which will assist students in future VCE and VCAL studies. In Year 9 English, students will also be expected to participate in Independent reading on a consistent basis.

Current areas of study include the following*:

• Theme unit: Australian Voices • Using language to persuade: Analyse This • Film as text: Romeo and Juliet (directed by Baz Luhrmann) • Close analysis of a text: Of Mice and Men (by John Steinbeck) • Genre study: Dystopian Fiction

*Please be advised that this list was correct at the time of printing, but may change in 2019.

Common Assessment Tasks and associated marking rubrics are used across all classes, with tasks being both written and verbal in nature.

ASSESSMENT TASKS

Assessment tasks may include:

• Creative response to a text • TEEL structured formal text response essay • Oral presentation • Issues analysis • Film as Text analysis

CORE: INQUIRY - HUMANITIES & SCIENCE (Personal Inquiry)

Students will study Humanities (History and Geography) and Science in the Inquiry Centre combined with Personal Learning studies in a subject called Personal Inquiry. Throughout the year, students will spend half their time exploring areas of interest in Science and half exploring areas of interest in Humanities through an inquiry learning approach. Science develops skills and knowledge in Chemistry, Biology and Physics and a variety of new sciences that have been developing over time. They will learn the ways in which these areas of science are interrelated and have an impact on our daily lives. Students explore Science Understanding, Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Inquiry Skills. There is a focus on developing skills in practical activities and report writing and on understanding science as a way of seeing the world. Humanities involves completing an inquiry into a major geographical and historical topic. Students inquire into many different local and global issues from historical and geographical perspectives. An exploration of the historical influences on Australia form the focus of the History component of Personal Inquiry. An exploration of how people interact and use Melbourne for a variety of purposes and look at sustainable ways of food production and this may impact on our future. This will form the focus of the Geography component of Personal Inquiry. Students will attend City Classroom Experience as part of their Geography studies. This will cost students $30 and can be paid at the start of the year as part of their booklist. The Personal Inquiry approach will develop skills in the management of independent learning skills. This approach will enable students to pursue their own interests and develop deeper understandings of topics and of themselves as learners.

ASSESSMENT TASKS

Students will be assessed on a range of activities and in a range of ways. This will include:

• Managing Personal Learning • Being an Independent Learner • Responding to Teacher generated questions • Personal Learning Journey • Presenting and Sharing Learning

CORE: INQUIRY - THE REAL THING

The Real Thing is an integrated studies subject that focuses on learning for real life and real outcomes. It incorporates a range of learning areas including literacy, numeracy, economics, civics and citizenship, health, interpersonal development and personal learning. The Real Thing has a strong emphasis on active, hands-on learning and student negotiation. Throughout the year, students will participate in three main areas of inquiry: Real Roles – an inquiry into economics and reasoning based on The Real Game. ELECTIVE: L.O.T.E.

Students acquire communication skills in Hindi. They develop understanding about the role of language and culture in communication. Their reflections on language use and language learning are applied in other learning contexts. Learning languages broadens students’ horizons about the personal, social, cultural and employment opportunities that are available in an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world. The interdependence of countries and communities requires people to negotiate experiences and meanings across languages and cultures. A bilingual or plurilingual capability is the norm in most parts of the world. Learning languages:

• contributes to the strengthening of the community’s social, economic and international development capabilities

• extends literacy repertoires and the capacity to communicate; strengthens understanding of the nature of language, of culture, and of the processes of communication

• develops intercultural capability, including understanding of and respect for diversity and difference, and an openness to different experiences and perspectives

• develops understanding of how culture shapes and extends learners’ understanding of themselves, their own heritage, values, beliefs, culture and identity

• strengthens intellectual, analytical and reflective capabilities, and enhances creative and critical thinking.

The Languages curriculum aims to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to ensure that students:

• communicate in the language they are learning • understand the relationship between language, culture and learning • develop intercultural capabilities • understand themselves as communicators
