As is always the case, these pages are fi lled with generosity. From business sponsorships and in-kind gifts to in-dividual donors, the care and concern you show for Fulton County Medical Center is unmatched. Obviously the headlines and much of this issue focuses on the dialysis treatment area at FCMC. When Dialy-sis Care Center CEO Dr. Babajide Sala-ko met with FCMC COO Kim Slee and me prior to the Annual Fund Apprecia-tion BBQ, he joked that he was hiring our staff to start other dialysis centers. He was impressed by the fundraising, construction and overall completed timeline. Well, the funds raised for this project is a credit to you and your friends and neighbors who saw the need and an-swered the call in a big way. The con-struction/renovation is a tribute to our maintenance staff , a highly-skilled group who go above and beyond the label of maintenance men and the timeline for the overall project is a credit to Slee. She ate, slept and breathed this project from Day One. -----We are coming off a very successful Blue Jean Ball (page 4), our last event for Fiscal Year 19. It caps off a very busy year of philanthropic activities and we have you to thank for supporting our endeavors once again. -----I’m very pleased to announce our band for the Fifth Annual Bluegrass and BBQ on Jan. 18, 2020: Carolina Blue. They are award winners from the state of North Carolina. Tickets go on sale Oct. 1. Remember, this is our main scholarship fundraiser. Read about the 2019 scholarship recipients on page 9.

ure gift by our community. You answered the call for support of Fulton County Medical Center’s new dialysis center by generously donating $101,000 for the project’s construction renovation of the former Specialty Ser-vice area. “It’s about the cause and what the community has enabled us to provide to the folks on dialysis close to home,” said Mike Straley, Executive Director of the FCMC Foundation. “From the start of the fundraising campaign with a goal of $85,000, this community was in touch with what it meant to their family and friends who need dialysis to have a facility here in Fulton County. And the community responded very generously.” The three-month “Dollars for Dialysis” campaign kicked off on Dec. 25 and ran through March 15. The project was

given a boost when Community State Bank of Orbisonia (CSB) off ered a $15,000 matching grant. In all, there were 138 gifts ranging from $5 to $15,000 to sup-port the project. “We are delighted to see that over $100,000 was raised and that so many people, businesses and organizations were compelled to give in an eff ort to meet the $15,000 challenge grant,” said Trudy Everhart, CEO and President of CSB.

The renovation phase was completed in early June for the June 17 opening. “Dialysis Care Center has been busy from the get-go and we anticipated they would be based on the initial inquiries we re-ceived from the community asking when it would be open,” said Kim Slee, Chief Op-erating Offi cer at FCMC. “Part of our mission at FCMC is to contin-ually improve the health of our communi-ty by providing diagnostic and therapeu-ty by providing diagnostic and therapeu-tic services,” said Mike Makosky, FCMC CEO tic services,” said Mike Makosky, FCMC CEO and President. “We are happy to support Dialysis Care Center in their eff orts to bring dialysis to our community and help allevi-ate the need to travel outside the area for this life-saving treatment.”this life-saving treatment.”this life-saving treatment.

and DCC (Dialysis Care Center) believed in this project for Fulton County. I see these initial numbers growing in Years 2 and 3. We’re glad to be here and it will be suc-cessful.” Shirley Elbin was full of smiles in her wheelchair, as she toured the new area she will call “home” for treatment. She gets to “sleep in a little” after getting up at 3 a.m. to travel to Franklin County for her 6 a.m. treatments the past 10 years. The southern Fulton County resident is now scheduled for 6:35 a.m. treatments on the FCMC campus. “Wonderfully exciting,” she said. Dialysis Care Center is housed in the former Specialty Services area. The renovation of the area started in late fall of 2018 with much of the construction completed by the FCMC maintenance staff . A campaign to raise funds for the renovation was created by the FCMC Foundation in mid-December of 2018

that ran for three months. The com-munity responded to the “Dollars for Dialysis” initiative by donating $101,000 for the project that was buoyed by a $15,000 matching grant from Commu-nity State Bank of Orbisonia. Said Elbin, “It’s amazing how this com-munity responded (fi nancially). They recognized the need for this type of service for so many of us living in Fulton County.” “This dialysis center is a great example of a small idea turning into a big, beauti-ful project,” said Dr. Babajide Salako, CEO of DCC, as he addressed about 130 do-nors. “Eighteen months ago, there were initial talks about having such a facility in Fulton County. I’m here to say few com-munities, or even cities, can boast about the same type of dialysis treatment that now exists here. The facility is beautiful and was constructed with the patients’ needs fi rst and foremost.”

FCMC CEO and President Mike Ma-kosky said: “We want to provide local services for our community and this was truly a needed service. We are very pleased that Dialysis Care Center has made a commitment to Fulton County Medical Center.”

Turn Your Annual Fund Gift Into A Forever Gift

nnual gifts are a critical lifeline to our organization. Without them, we

couldn’t fund our work. If you’re an annual donor, you know fi rsthand the satisfaction that comes from making a diff erence—and we deeply appreciate your generos-ity. But as you look to the future, you may wonder what will happen to the programs made possible through your gifts once you’re gone. How can you make sure your generosity continues forever? One option is to make a gift in your will or trust to establish an en-dowment. Here’s an example of how that could work. Let’s say Jerry makes an annual donation of $1,000 and would like to continue his support after his lifetime. His estate plan-ning attorney suggests that Jerry include a provision in his will to fund an endowment with a gift of $25,000. Once funded, we will use a portion of the endowment each year to fund the program of Jerry’s choice. The remainder is reinvested, which allows it to grow and support annual payouts indefi -nitely. This generous arrangement replaces Jerry’s $1,000 annual gift after his lifetime.

As a result, our organization receives the benefi t of Jerry’s generosity forever. *assum-*assum-*ing 4 percent ($1,000) is used by the fund annually . You can use an endowment gift to honor someone important to you who appreciates the work we do. Consider designating your endowment in his or her name as a way to celebrate the connection to the FCMC Foun-dation.The information is not intended as legal or tax advice. InTheirOwnWords“Recently my husband (Carrol) and I went to the Wound Clinic at Fulton County Medical Center. What a delightful experi-ence. We never waited for our appointments and never felt rushed. We were treated as persons and not a ‘wound.’ The wound clinic staff should be commended for their ser-vice. This was my fi rst experience at the Medical Center and I would highly recommend it. Dr. Ellis and her staff went above and beyond.”

George Roper was at a crossroads. Should he travel seven miles west or 25 miles east to get cardio care. The Mercersburg, PA resident head-ed west and hasn’t looked back. “When I fi rst came to Fulton Coun-ty Medical Center in November of 2017, naturally, I knew something was wrong with my heart, and I’m thinking I might be dead in two weeks,” said Roper with a wry laugh. “I walked into the (Cardio) department and felt welcomed from the fi rst minute. The ladies are welcoming.” And Dr. Mandak is very accommodating, according to Roper. “I heard great things about Dr. Mandak,” said Roper. “Once we started talk-ing, I knew I made the right decision. There is a ‘can-do’ attitude. As patients, we have questions. I can tell you without any hesitation, their team is very helpful. They put you at ease and explain everything in a way you can under-stand. They talk with you, not at you.” For Roper, it was a trip worth making.

InAppreciationInRecognitionChris Boryan, Grants and Donors Relations Manager for the FCMC Foun-dation, was awarded the “Business Person of the Year” by the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce in March. Boryan has written and/or managed grants that have yielded over

$1.2 million, includ-ing $800,000 for the access road, while building relation-ships with grantors such as Susan G. Ko-men, Southern Al-leghenies, Valley Ru-ral and FirstEnergy. Other grants have assisted with pro-grams and equip-

ment needs, including the Greenhouse, Therapies department and IT department. In addition, he directs the Foundation’s Development Council, the volun-teer group that makes up the Annual Giving, Planned Giving and Business & Industry committees. He coordinates the scholarship program. As a result of helping plan speakers and free offerings through the De-velopment Committees, he was responsible for researching and getting Pennsylvania Downtown Center to speak at one of last year’s Business & Industry morning meetings that was attended by over 30 community-minded business folks. It spawned an interest in establishing McCon-nellsburg’s very own Main Street Program that now has taken root. He continues to be an active volunteer in those endeavors.
