2019 BRAVURA BRUNCHWhat a celebration members and friends of

TFO/North Suncoast Associates enjoyed at the 25th Anniversary Bravura Brunch on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at the Innisbrook Golf and Spa Resort, Palm Harbor. Stuart Malina, Principal Guest Conductor of The Florida Orchestra, gave an exciting performance that dazzled the record crowd of 370 guests.

An accomplished classical pianist, Malina commenced his special musical presentation with an inspiring rendition of Chopin’s Polonaise in C# Minor. He then transitioned into a rousing version of Albeniz’ Tango in D Major. For the middle portion of his program, he played his own arrangement of Gilbert and Sullivan’s When I Was a Lad from the comic opera, HMS Pinafore. He concluded his spectacular solo performance with two ragtime songs from American composer Scott Joplin – Solace: A Mexican Serenade and one of the most famous of all ragtime pieces, Maple Leaf Rag. Longtime Bravura supporter, The Music Gallery of Clearwater, exclusive agents for Steinway & Sons, provided the Steinway piano for the occasion.

Jason Alpert in his role as Master of Ceremonies, Host for the “live chat” with Stuart and auctioneer, oversaw a fast-paced and entertaining program, including a very successful Live Auction that featured A Dinner with the Maestro at Café Ponte, a 7-day/6-Night Photo Safari for two in South Africa and a Wine Pull of 30 donated bottles of wine, including 3 grand prize bottles by Bella Vino, Belleair Bluffs.

We are proud that TFO’s Community Engagement and Education programs will benefit from the Bravura Brunch net proceeds. Remarks by Rad Bolt, Orchestra and Band Director at Dunedin High School, added important context as they preceded the Bid from the Heart bidding. The opportunity to work with TFO’s two Teaching Artists, Kristin Baird (violin) and Kaitlin Springer (viola), through the TFO Teaching Artist Program partnership with Pinellas County Schools has had a dramatic impact on his professional development, as a first year orchestra director (whose background/training was not in strings), and on his students. 4

All of the above leads to our special thanks to the following individuals who played such an important role in the success of the 25th Anniversary Bravura Brunch.

Our Gold Sponsor, Debbie Stone, is to be thanked for her generosity, as her lead gift inspired another special gift from A Friend of the Orchestra and other Bronze and Brass Sponsors which helped total sponsorship reach $25,000 in donations in honor of the 25th Anniversary celebration.

The Silent Auction Co-Chairs Ron and Dale Anderson, with the excellent assistance of Acquisition Manager Eleanor Cicerchi and Table Manager Marilou van Zanten were very successful in creating the highest revenue for this celebration with their subcommittee of

solicitors. The Silent Auction team was assisted the day of the event by their posse: Eleanor Cicerchi, John and Beth Getker, Eric and Merle Herz, Jean Rascher, Martin and Marilou van Zanaten, Rick Tetrick, and Bruce and Mary Plummer. Table Host Chair Nancy Dietrich and her subcommittee enlisted the aid of a wonderful team of 33 hosts who helped bring Bravura its highest attendance to date. This effort has been key to introducing new friends to The Florida Orchestra and supporting growing financial support.

Reservations Chair Sally Trotter for her supreme dedication in recording all our reservations and donations and to Treasurer Rick Tetrick who did a superb job in our final reconciliation. Mailing List/ Payment Station Manager Diane Myers for keeping all our technology needs in order.

Publicity Chair Veronica Kolze for her efforts and for the wonderful PowerPoint presentation Celebrating the Bravura Brunch Chairmen, which we will have the opportunity to view again at the Annual Meeting.

The Live Auction Bid Spotters: Pat Allen, Jane Cadwallader, Kimberly Cass, Jodi Johnston, Ann Kennedy, Pat King, Laura Longo and Corrine Potts. The Payment Station volunteers: Rachel Alexander, Cheryl Hurst, Kim Payne, Rick Tetrick, Heather Trotter, and Dr. Betsy Walsh.

FLORIDA ORCHESTRA MUSICIANS ASSOCIATION (FOMA)

JUSTINE LEBARON YOUNG ARTISTS COMPETITION

Announces the winners of the annual Justine LeBaron Young Artists Competition. The overall grand prize goes to pianist Marco Jimenez, 16, of St. Petersburg, who will perform the first movement of his winning competition piece, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, with The Florida Orchestra on a Coffee Concert in March 2020. Marco is second from the left in the montage above.

The competition is directed by Bill Mickelsen on

behalf of the FOMA, assisted by NSA’s Laura Longo. There was a record number of contestants with amazingly high artistic standards exhibited by all. The competition is named in remembrance of the former Principal French Horn of The Florida Orchestra, Justine LeBaron. This year, 37 classical music students from Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco counties competed in the senior and junior divisions in piano and instrumental categories. Ages ranged from 8 to 22 years old. Cash prizes totaling about $4,600 was distributed among the winners. NSA supports this competition through a cash grant and with volunteer help.

SING OUT TAMPA BAY

The fourth annual Sing Out! Tampa Bay concert took place on Thursday, February 7, at Mahaffey Theater. 177 people from the greater Tampa Bay area joined TFO on stage to sing a variety of songs, from This is Me from The Greatest Showman to classics like Singin’ in the Rain. The audience had a great time with surprises like a guest appearance from Captain Fear, mascot of the Buccaneers, during The Pirate Song and the opportunity to create the cannon blasts in the 1812 Overture by popping paper bags.

“My participation in Sing Out has been a joyous and sensational experience. I’ve had so much fun interacting with talented community members and musicians. The Sing Out journey prompted me to join both TFO Volunteer Guilds.” Patricia Allen, NSA member
