Congressional Foster Youth Shadow Experience This opportunity brings foster youth and policymakers to the same table. Over the course of three days, participants attend young leader training focusing on federal foster care policy, strategic sharing and team-building exercises. The program concludes with the foster youth participants shadowing congressional members, allowing them to share their #FosterYouthVoices to give the representative a well-rounded understanding of the experiences of youth in foster care, which will help as they pursue policies that impact all foster youth.

A trusted camp cousin has charge of just two campers and each camper also has a surrogate grandma and grandpa, as well as a large support staff of aunts and uncles. Tthe ratio of staff-to-campers is high to ensure success and safety. During the week there is a birthday bash with cake, games and presents to celebrate each child’s birthday. Through quality time with each child and encouragement, each child leaves camp with a positive outlook on life. Campers will experience outdoor activities, hiking, archery, zipline, fishing, canoes and participate in a low-level challenge course that helps them recognize the importance of self-respect, teamwork and communication while having fun! Life 360 Life 360 is a year-round life skills mentoring program for Arizona foster children who are at least 15 years old and builds on the successful relationships established during our summer camp programs (however, there is no requirement that participants have gone to camp). The program focuses on basic skills like money management, household management, planning for college, budgeting, interviewing for jobs, job skills, nutrition and meal planning. This program is primarily for Maricopa County.

Best for Babies: CJ James | Email: [email protected] This program provides both training and support to court and DCS personnel in establishing best practices for dealing with foster children ages 0-3 years. Issues addressed include prenatal exposure to maternal substance abuse and low birth weight, which are associated with an increased likelihood of behavioral problems, chronic health conditions and developmental delays. The goals of Best for Babies are: (1) to increase shared knowledge of the unique needs of maltreated infants and toddlers; and (2) to increase community collaboration in the child welfare system to improve outcomes. A particular concern is that the unique and immediate needs of infants and toddlers in the child welfare system are often overlooked, since the focus of ongoing services is likely to be the more visible legal and mental health issues of their birth parents. Never Shake a Baby: Beth Eggers-Sedlet | Email: [email protected] This program is an evidence-based program aimed at providing parents information and skills to prevent shaken baby syndrome (SBS). NSBAZ is available throughout the state to all parents who have just given birth. The NSBAZ program is offered by the nurse to new parents just prior to discharge with their newborn. Parents who voluntarily participate are given a tip sheet on how to handle a crying infant, watch a video on shaken baby syndrome and are asked to sign a commitment form that states that they were educated on the dangers of shaking babies. They also make a plan to handle their crying child and inform all who take care of their child about their plan and about SBS. Triple P Positive Parenting Program©: Cricket Mitchell | Email: [email protected] The Triple P – Positive Parenting Program© is one of the world’s most effective parenting programs. Triple builds upon parents’ existing strength and teaches them simple and practical strategies they can adapt to suit their own values, beliefs and needs.

Executive Director: Linda Hollis, Ph.D.

As part of the Arizona Partnership for Children, Catholic Community Services of Southern Arizona recruits and prepares families to welcome children into their homes and care for them. They offer ongoing supportive services to enhance the foster family experience, as well as medically complex training for families wishing to foster infants/children who need a higher level of care. FREE ARTS OF ARIZONA (cont.)

Weekly Mentor This program pairs adult volunteer mentors with groups of children from one of Free Arts’ partner child social service agencies for weekly, hour-long art sessions. Using our mindfully-crafted arts curriculum, mentors help children begin to process their trauma, build trusting relationships and freely express themselves. Mentors are trained in youth development and therapeutic art techniques, as well as provide resources and best practices to encourage strength-based communication and empowerment.

Professional Artist Series Free Arts commissions professional artists to teach children specific art skills and introduce them to career opportunities in the arts. Past workshops have covered a range of topics and mediums including dancing, acting, creative writing, painting, welding, drumming, photography and more. Artists lead sessions designed to teach transferable art, social, and coping skills. Most series conclude with a public exhibit or performance. These opportunities to develop and showcase skills vastly improve children’s self-esteem.

Free Arts Days Free Arts Days connect children to their community by creating meaningful, one-day, creative programs in collaboration with local arts and culture organizations, including Ballet Arizona, Children’s Museum of Phoenix, Desert Botanical Garden, Herberger Theater Center, Phoenix Art Museum, The Phoenix Symphony and Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. Children of all ages come together from different shelters and foster care group homes to participate in Free Arts Days. Surrounded by caring volunteers in a community setting, children experience a sense of connection, value and self-worth.

Camp Series Free Arts offers three different camp experiences. Through the program, children explore various art forms with the guidance of professional teaching artists, experienced staff and caring volunteers. Each week-long, therapeutically-intense art camp concludes with a final performance where participants share their art with the public.

Youth Leadership and Alumni The Youth Leadership Team provides a safe space for program participants to continue to access Free Arts and connect to each other, even after they leave the foster care or shelter system. These young adults continue to build the skills needed to increase self-efficacy and resilience.

YAVAPAI CASA FOR KIDS FOUNDATION (cont.) Yavapai CASA for Kids Foundation (YC4KF) is the Prescott-area Yavapai County CASA support council. In addition to funding the unmet needs of children in foster care in Yavapai County, the Foundation has expanded to include many other types of services such as a family visitation center, training, and transportation expenses for CASAs. Their programs include:

Adoption Mailbox Exchange YC4KF operates a mailbox for confidential letter and gift exchanges between adoptive and birth families (when approved by the Court and when both the birth and the adoptive families agree to participate). The mailbox ensures that the birth family can receive news about their children who have been adopted in a way that respects the confidentiality of all parties. Celebration Cards YC4KF provides celebration cards – gift cards from local stores that are given to children in foster care when they experience a milestone, such as a birthday, improving grades in school, getting along better in the foster home, not wetting the bed for a week, or sleeping through the night in their own bed, in order to provide much-needed positive reinforcement. Christmas Gifts The Foundation coordinates holiday gift trees to collect holiday gifts for children in foster care at a number of retailers in their area. A list can be found on the group’s website. Clothing Initiative YC4KF’s Clothing Initiative ensures every child in foster care under the Prescott Courts has adequate and appropriate clothing through two programs. Through the Emergency Clothing fund, they provide DCS funds so children can be properly clothed immediately upon removal from the parents. To make sure every kid in care has adequate clothing, Yavapai CASA for Kids Foundation provides a bi-annual clothing supplement for all youth in foster care under the jurisdiction of the Prescott Courts. Family Visitation Center YC4KF provides a clean, safe and child-friendly environment for biological parents and their children in foster care to have supervised visits. Grants YC4KF provides grants of goods and services through their application form available online at their website. Their form specifically asks if the applicant has first applied to AFFCF. Anyone involved in the life of a foster child can apply.
