Welcome to Fort Lauderdale!

History & BackgroundIncorporated on March 27, 1911, Fort Lauderdale is one of the ten largest cities in Florida. Its 23 miles of beachfront – shaped by the Atlantic Ocean, New River, and inland waterways – has earned it the nickname the “Venice of America.” Fort Lauderdale is named for a Second Seminole War fortification built on the banks of the New River in 1838, which was itself named for Major William Lauderdale, who led the detachment responsible for the fort’s construction. It is located on the southeast coast of Florida, in Broward County, and boasts a good blend of businesses and outstanding quality of life.

On behalf of the NLC-RISC Board of Directors, thank you for joining us at the 2019 NLC-RISC Trustees Conference. As a member of the governing body for your pool, you are critical to helping your pool achieve its mission. The goal of this conference is to provide you with information and contacts that will help you fulfill your responsibilities.

The NLC-RISC staff has developed an excellent agenda for you this year, with the goal of ensuring that whatever your background or focus, you can find a session of interest in every time slot. The sessions address technology, organizational wellbeing, PTSD, healthcare, qualified immunity, bias, and more, with especially robust pool finance sessions and strong preparation for new trustees. Along the way, there will be plenty of networking opportunities.

We owe a special thanks to the 2019 Conference Planning Committee members, who make this conference a success. The members are: Joe Damiata (Vermont), David Demchak (Connecticut), Dan Greensweig (Minnesota), Bob Haynes (Texas), Jeff Hovey (Iowa), Chris Krepcho (Florida), Paul Meyer (North Carolina), and Carol Wilmes (Washington). They helped RISC staff envision sessions that address the areas of greatest interest to pools, and also support the conference by devoting their own time and that of their staff as presenters. We also want to express our thanks to the


Florida League of Cities, its Executive Director-Designate, Jeannie Garner, and its Director of Insurance Services, Chris Krepcho, for providing feedback and suggestions during the planning of the conference.

We are providing you with a streamlined brochure and convenient conference app. The brochure provides essential session and scheduling information, as well as maps. You will find the session descriptions, bios, and attendee information in the app. The app is loaded with the session slideshows and the conference evaluation form. Please complete the conference evaluation before you leave the conference. You can also evaluate individual sessions in the app as soon as you attend them. Step-by-step guidance is available at the registration desk and in your materials, and any NLC staff member will be happy to help.
