This project runs mid-February each year (20 places) in Way Kambas National Park (Southern Sumatra). Way Kambas covers 1,300 square kilometres in Lampung province and consists of swamp forest and lowland rainforest. The park still has a few critically endangered Sumatran Tigers, Sumatran Elephants and Sumatran Rhinoceroses. It also provides excellent bird watching, with the rare White-winged Wood Duck among the over 400 species present in the park. Activities include: Help the Elephant Conservation Centre in the park develop an education/interpretive program. Raising funds to help with conservation projects. Deploy and analyse the data from camera traps and help design a system to protect them from poachers, elephants and fire.

Students will conduct field projects, participate in workshops and lectures, and visit marine science facilities to explore the challenges of protecting globally valuable natural marine resources in Eastern Indonesia. Field trips will include coral reef studies, mine site impact assessment, fisheries resource use and considerations of food safety and food security. Integration with students and staff at the University of Pattimura will provide a rich knowledge-sharing experience.

This program involves a structured series of field trips complemented by lectures and project work to provide a deep insight into the importance of seafood in the Vietnamese culture, and experience the livelihood challenges in remote fishing villages, floating fish farms, land-based aquaculture farms, fishing ports, wet-markets, shipbuilding and a seafood-processing factory. Based on the coast in Central Vietnam we visit a range of marine habitats including snorkelling on coral reefs and seagrass. Integration with Masters students at Nha Trang University enables knowledge sharing on a range of marine management issues from a Vietnamese and Australian perspective.

Northwest Vietnam is a mountainous region, originally covered with rainforests rich in flora and fauna. The region is undergoing pressure from deforestation by a growing population that often engages in annual cropping on very steep slopes, leading to declining incomes and soil erosion, as well as loss of biodiversity. The Southern Cross University trip focuses on work being done by us in collaboration with agroforestry and forest science institutions, in developing more sustainable agroforestry land uses and strategies for forest restoration.

This project explores marine sustainability in northern Bali with a focus on marine biodiversity and marine debris. Participants will have the opportunity to view a range of environmental issues through the lens of local Balinese culture and participate in activities to help address key challenges.

7 – 20 JANUARY, 2019 Credits: 10 days’ industry experience

This is a study tour in which students learn about human-centred design (focuses on communication and empathy) while being immersed in Nepal. Participants don’t need to have any prior knowledge and the summit welcomes students who just want to give something new a go. There are a few days of workshops and activities and then students will live in a Nepali community with a family for about five days to learn about their lives. Students will work in small teams to develop a presentation to deliver back to the community members.

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2019 (TBC) Credits: 10 days’ industry experience

This fantastic two-week Engineering Study Tour of Japan aims to provide students with practical engineering experience, cultural exposure and professional engagement. They will gain an understanding of the relationship between Japan and Australia in terms of industry and engineering by visiting various engineering companies, cultural events and attractions in three different major cities: Tokyo, Osaka and Hiroshima.

Some of these include Fuji TV, Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, Hiroshima Shipping Dock, Mazda Factory and more.

Students will improve their cultural awareness and have the opportunity to talk with fellow engineering students at Tokyo, Kobe and Kindai universities to share views, outlooks, study experiences, and learn from each other in doing so.

Japan is synonymous with technology and the country’s reputation for robotics, electronics and the automotive industry positions them as international leader. Japan has some of the biggest electronics conglomerates in the world, is renowned for cutting-edge innovation, and is among world leaders in its number of Nobel Prize scientists. The tour also includes free days for students to do their own sightseeing in this beautiful country.
