2 | 2019 RED ANGUS SALE
Welcome to the Halfmann-Beckton Red Angus Sale!Dear Friends,
We welcome you to join us on Wednesday, October 2nd, at the ranch near Miles, Texas for the 2019 edition of our "Profit Through Experience" Sale. Combined, the Halfmann and Beckton Red Angus programs have over 130 years’ experience in supplying genetics to the beef indus-try. Our longevity is largely due to our shared focus on commercial customer profitability.
Both Beckton and Halfmann Red Angus have endeavored to develop genetics that result in more live calves, higher pregnancy rates, cows staying productive in the herd longer, more total pounds per acre - and ultimately greater profitability for our cow/calf customers. Throughout this 2019 sale catalog, you’ll find many bulls rank in the top of the breed for HerdBuilder - Red Angus' most comprehensive economic selection index that balances calving ease, pay-weight, reproductive traits, cow feed costs, and calf value traits to identify those bulls that offer the impact on profit across the entire beef supply chain. 2019 has seen the continued dominance of the Red Angus female, and Red Angus sired heifers remain the replacement of choice among commercial beef operations. Superior Livestock Auction data compiled by Kansas State Uni-versity (KSU) between 2010 and 2018 shows that Red Angus sired heifers have outsold Black Angus sired heifers by $7/cwt.
In addition to 160 Age Advantage bulls, Beckton and Halfmann Red Angus are joining together to offer over 200 head of commercial Red Angus females; which will sell from their respective ranch. These heifers result from the same matings that produced our 2019 bull offering, so they are loaded with genetics for calving ease, fertility, longevity, and low maintenance costs.
A special feature of this year’s event will be the front-end Red Angus females we’ll offer. This in-cludes high MPPA donor prospects with proven progeny records as well as some of our top-per-forming replacements – all with front pasture phenotype!
As you study the catalog if you have any questions, or need someone to assist you in bull se-lection, please feel free to give either of our operations a call. We look forward to seeing you on October 2nd!

Focusing On The Bottom LineProfit has two sides to the equation, Income & Expense. For many years, some cattlemen have concentrated on how to maximize income, while not paying attention to expense. When times get tough, businesses of all industries tend to become more efficient and focus on reducing expenses. The Red Angus Association recognized this early on and devel-oped unbiased scientific methods to measure economically relevant traits to help cattlemen become more efficient. The most economically relevant traits are Calving Ease Direct (CED), Birthweight (BW), Maintenance Energy (ME) and Stay-ability.
The Impact Of Birthweight & Calving EaseThe foundation of animal breeding is fertility and calf surviv-al. Without cows breeding up and weaning a calf every year, producers will incur an economic loss. Using low birthweight, calving-ease bulls with growth will ensure a higher per-centage of weaned calves and more total pounds of calves weaned. For example, suppose you use a higher birthweight bull that adds 20 more pounds per calf at weaning. If the calves wean at 600 pounds and you lose one calf at birth, the cost of losing one calf is equivalent to the additional 20 pounds of gain on 30 calves. Maintaining a high weaning per-centage should be a high priority. Low birth weight is highly correlated to mature cow size. An added benefit of using low birthweight bulls is the surest way of producing moder-ate-sized, efficient females for the future.
StayabilityThis predicts the ability of a bull’s daughters’ to conceive ev-ery year until the age of six. That is how long it takes a female to break even given all the expenses of development. Red Angus is the only major breed able to measure fertility in this manner due to the use of THR (Total Herd Reporting).
Maintenance EnergyThis EPD predicts the relative feed energy requirement for maintenance, for cows produced by a sire or female. 70% of cow herd feed costs are burned up in maintaining weight and condition. Feed costs make up by far the largest proportion of operating costs. The ME EPD is calculated using mature weight, milk and body condition score (BCS). Breeders collect cow weights and BCS at weaning. Maintaining moderate framed and easy keeping females is very crucial in our envi-ronment. They require less energy to maintain each year and they also breed back more consistently. Our cows must wean a high percentage of their own body weight to be considered efficient. If you can raise a 600-lb. calf each year with an 1100-lb. cow, why would you want to keep feeding that 1600-lb. cow that does the same thing with more grass & feed?
Using EPDs & RatiosA common misconception is that EPDs will tell us which animal of several being compared is ‘best.’ EPDs are merely a description of each animal’s genetic make-up. It is up to us to determine which animal is best for us. Selecting for single traits is not always the most effective choice. When selecting a bull, take into consideration all traits that are relevant for your program. By correctly using EPDs, we can each deter-mine which animal best fits our programs, or moves them in a direction we want to go. Ratios are used for comparing within a single contemporary group. Selecting between contempo-rary groups with actual data can be inaccurate and lead to selection or culling errors! Performance measurements such as growth and marbling may vary greatly between contem-porary groups depending on how they are managed and fed. For example, grain-fed animals are more likely to have higher marbling scores than forage-fed animals. However, forage-fed animals may be genetically capable of producing higher marbling scores but are not fed high-grain rations for other management reasons.

RED ANGUS BULLS LOTS 1-2
This Defender son will fix Gain & Grade - ranking in the top 10% for both traits, and, he'll add as much rib and hindquarter as any bull in the offering. HIs 6-yr-old Impressive dam is a top producer maintaining a 106 MPPA. His 123 gain ratio demonstrates his ability to convert a
high-forage diet into high-quality protein.
Here's the perfect herd sire for ranchers who want best 12% calving ease, but don't want to sacrifice balanced EPDs, profit indices or phenotype. Long-bodied, deep quartered and wide-based, F178 is sound, athletic and masculine and has 12 EPDs and indices in the top third of the breed. F178 bested his herdmates by 11% at weaning, 9% at yearling, 6% for
gain and 10% for ribeye. His dam 3-year-old dam is an ideal female - under 1100 lbs and has already earned a 106 MPPA as a 3-year-old.
This Top 1% HerdBuilder son of Likable predicts to produce daughters that require less feed to maintain body condition and have increased longevity and fertility - which combines to predict greater cow herd profitability.
Synergy was injured this summer in the breeding pasture as a 9-yr-old bull; an age where most sires have long since been sent to the packer. Year in and year out, Synergy sons are our most
popular thanks to the tremendous longevity, calving ease and cow herd building traits he delivers. This Top 5% HerdBuilder is no exception and predicts to produce heifers that breed
early, calve unassisted and remain productive in the herd.
Lot 3
Synergy consistently produced reliable calving ease with exceptional perfor-mance and F145 is an excellent example. Remember, Red Angus had a base
adjustment for calving ease this time last year, so if in previous years your CED number was a 9 or 10 to use on heifers - you'll want to be around 15 or higher
to have the same degree of calving ease. F145 gets that done with exceptional performance ratios of: 129 WW, 122 YW, 110 ADG, 107 Marbling, and 110 REA.

If you like buying bulls out of cows that have stood the test of time - here's your bull! His moderate-sized dam has been producing at the top of our herd for a decade and this might be her best effort yet. If you need to wind row some calving ease bulls with excellent HerdBuilder ranks, here's another bull that should be on your list. Best 3% calving ease with 9 traits in the top 22% of the breed. His 4-yr-old dam only weighs 1055 but weaned off more pounds as indicated by her 107 MPPA.
These Accent sons just keep getting better. F079 is one of the most powerful individuals in the sale yet he's still a sleep all night heifer bull and predicts top 3% Herdbuilder profitability. Pair him up with his half brother lot 11, and turn them out on your #1 keeper replacements.
Wow...this Likable ranks in the top 20% or better for both rapid Gain and low dry matter intake (DMI) - that means more pounds of carcass with less pounds of feed - Just one of many calving ease bulls in this sale that offer way more than just low birth weight.
Similar to lot 13, F089 combines Likable and Accent to produce reliable calving ease with excellent predictions to improve profits through reduced dry matter intake (DMI) and lower mature cow maintenance energy requirements (ME).
This Best 2% HerdBuilder by Accent W180 stacks profitability through improved calf survival (CED & CEM) reduced feed bill (DMI and ME) and better reproductive efficiency (HPG and STAY).
Our calving ease bulls will keep you between the white lines for all areas of production. For example, F934 ranks in the top 1/3 (or better) of the breed for low feed intake, low mature cow maintenance energy requirement, cow herd longevity, average daily gain, and end product merit.

Profit is all about Balancing expense traits against revenue traits. This front-pasture Synergy son does that as well as any bull in the sale. His EPDs for CED, CEM, HPG, STAY and MARB predict you'll get higher breed up, more live calves, a higher percentage of calves weaned and higher quality grades, while his ME and DMI predict your grass and feed resources will go a lot further.
Running more cows per unit of land is key to ranch profitability and F135 can help in that regard. His dam weighs just over 1000 lbs and still produces more pounds of calf per her 105 MPPA.

F101 ends a run of four elite calving ease bulls that are outcross sires on most of the daughters of the most popular Red Angus calving ease sires of the last decade. F101 not only ranks in the top 3% for calving ease but is loaded with tremendous maternal genetics.
Here we are halfway through the sale and we find one of the best-balanced individuals in the offering - no surprise F100 is combining Synergy and Accent in his first two generations and has 10 traits in the top third of the breed.
Linebred Accent that ranks in the top 1% for both HerdBuilder and Calving Ease - more live calves is the beginning of bigger profits. He is also one of the best scanning bulls in the entire sale with a 139 IMF ratio.

BREEDING GUARANTEEAll animals sold are guaranteed breeders by the Seller. All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing within six months of the sale date. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the purchaser may return the animal to the ranch of the seller if in good condition, free of disease, and complying with the health requirements of the Seller’s state. The Seller will be entitled to six months trial following the return of the animal in which to prove that the animal is a breeder. If at the end of six months, the Seller shall be obligated, at his option, to refund the purchase price, replace the animal with another of equal value, or grant the buyer credit for use on cattle marketed by the seller. The return of the full purchase price shall, in any case, be deemed full satisfaction and settlement. If the Seller proved the animal to be a breeder, it shall be the obligation of the purchaser to take delivery of the animal at the purchaser’s expense. All animals are guaranteed to be breeders, with the exception of a) calves under twelve months of age; or b) animals shown by Purchaser after sale; or c) gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the Purchaser.
SELLER’S SEMEN RIGHTSSeller keeps a 50% revenue-sharing breeding interest without possession, in every bull in this catalog unless otherwise noted in this catalog or in the sale day supplement. In the event Seller elects to collect semen from a des-ignated bull, it will be done at Seller’s expense and during such time when purchaser is not using the bull for breeding. Future semen collections of the bull must be made known to all owners prior to collecting. These collections and costs will be divided according to each owner’s interest unless other-wise agreed upon mutually by all owners.
