Saint John’s Communities Foundation has existed quietly in the background, supporting Saint John’s On The Lake since 1982. The Organization functions without fanfare or notoriety yet sets a tone for the thoughtful planned giving which sustains our Community. Sharing the Office of Philanthropy with our operating entity, the Foundation functions on a shoestring budget yet yields meaningful results year after year. When needs present, the Foundation rises to the occasion – like in 2015-6 when Chaplaincy and Chapel Music were fully endowed as a result of a concentrated campaign. Other times, donors come to us, to create a program fund which speaks to their passion, or honors a loved one; many of our life enrichment programs came to be because generous donors wished to share their good fortune and spread joy to their fellow residents.

In the past year, our Scholarship Fund, which supports employees striving to advance their education, has been a popular choice. In total, the Foundation stewards 17 endowed funds covering a broad range of interest and activity. Endowments are variously created gradually over time, as well as quickly with a significant gift; all gifts are honored, gratefully accepted knowing they are given with intention and purpose.

As Saint John’s On The Lake grows and extends service to more older adults, both on campus and in the community, the role of the Foundation becomes increasingly vital. It is the commitment of our Board of Directors and the strength of our staff that give us confidence to embrace the next chapter knowing through their efforts and the generosity of our donors, our future is secured.

With Gratitude,

The Saint John’s Communities Foundation, Inc. (“the Foundation”) collection of funds exists to provide support to Saint John’s Communities, Inc. (“Communities”) operations for their respective stated purpose and to provide grants to agencies supporting the visually impaired in the greater Milwaukee community. Two new funds debuted in 2019: the Lewis Fellowship Fund and the Titus Scholarship Fund. One fund, the Gift Annuity fund, has sunset. Consequently, the Foundation now consists of seventeen funds, all of which actively accept cash contributions. In 2019, fifteen funds received contributions totaling approximately $269,000 – an average of $18,000 per fund – with over $69,000 directed to the Directors’ Fund for Charitable Care and $116,000 collectively to the respective Scholarship Funds. Additionally, in 2019 the Foundation completed its first distribution in support of the Annual Symposium On Aging totaling more than $33,000.

Currently, virtually one-hundred percent (100%) of the funds’ capital, valued at approximately $8.2 million as of December 31, 2019, is held in trust by U.S. Bank with portfolio investment management provided by Marquette Associates. Administrative support, including, clerical, fundraising, accounting and management is provided to the Foundation by Communities staff. All such expense is currently borne by Communities.

The annual distribution from the Marquette-invested funds is 5% of the 20-quarter rolling average portfolio market value plus discretionary, Board-designated distributions for earnings in excess of the 5%. Specific fund distribution restrictions take precedence over this general distribution rule. September 30th of each calendar year is the established measurement date in order to have a uniform procedure that facilitates Communities’ budget preparation.

The Foundation’s fiscal year is based on a calendar year-end. In addition to the $269,000 donation revenue recorded in 2019 the Foundation also realized $224,000 in investment income. Investment and treasury management fees totaled $14,000, or .17% of the fund’s net assets. Distributions to Communities for the aforementioned support totaled $308,000. Grant payments totaling $8,500 were made to three Milwaukee area agencies supporting those who are visually impaired. “Other” miscellaneous activity resulted in an additional increase in net assets of $1.1 million primarily attrib-uted to unrealized gains on the investment portfolio, reflective of the overall “boom” experienced by 2019 investment markets.

The Foundation is considered a “subsidiary” of Communities due to the fact the Communities’ Board of Directors approves all members of the Foundation’s Board. As such, the Foundation’s financial statements are required to be audited and consolidated with those of Communities. Furthermore, Wisconsin Statute § 202.11 requires a charitable organization with annual contributions over $500,000 to file an audited financial statement prepared by an independent CPA. As a result of the $269,000 in 2019 contributions an Independent Auditor’s Report is not required to be filed with the state.

Return ObjectivesThe primary return objective of the Fund is to exceed inflation by a minimum of 5% per year while assuming reasonable investment risk.

Risk ToleranceWhile achieving the return objectives, the Fund is able to tolerate certain levels of risk, which are:

To accept prudent levels of short and long-term volatility consistent with the near-term cash flow needs, funding level and long-term liability structure of the Fund,

To tolerate appropriate levels of downside risk relative to the Fund’s target rate of return. In doing so, the Investment Committee will attempt to minimize the probability of underperforming the Fund’s target rate of return over the long-term and to minimize the shortfall in the event such underperformance occurs,

To accept certain variances in the asset allocation structure of the Fund relative to the broad financial markets and peer groups, and

To tolerate certain levels of short-term underperformance by the Fund’s investment managers.

Constraints on the Investment ObjectivesIncluded in the cash/fixed income portion of the portfolio are the money market and high quality fixed income assets having a redemption value approximately equal to the estimated cash needs of the Fund during the trailing 3 to 4 years. The estimated cash needs of the Fund per year is the annual distribution amount of 5% of the value of the Fund utilizing the “Harvard Method” (approximately $150,000) plus other known or potential needs of Saint John’s, if any.

Portfolio returns on investment over the last five years ranged from a negative 7.7% to a positive 19.4%, with an average for the five-year period of 7.12%. The individual annual returns reflect the stock market

volatility experienced nation-wide.

The total market value of endowment assets held by Marquette Associates as of

December 31, 2019 was $8.2 million. The portfolio was allocated by

Marquette as shown in the accompanying graph. The distribution is consistent with the

Specific Investment Allocation targets as dictated by the

Saint John’s Communities Foundation, Inc. Investment Policy Statement.

Philanthropy Report by Sybil Bell

GENEROSITY. GRATITUDE. GROWTH.Visionary volunteers incorporated Saint John’s Foundation in 1982 to create a framework of charitable giving opportunities. From that historic commitment, the Foundation’s Board of Directors continue the purposeful work to grow the endow-ment, steward the funds and advance Saint John’s position as a leader in retirement services. Over the course of 37 years, the assets have grown from the initial opening balance of $100,000 to $8.25 million.

2019 YEAR-IN-REVIEW Through the many generous financial gifts to the Foundation, our donors play an essential role advancing and investing in future programs and initiatives. It is the privilege of the Office of Philanthropy to connect our donors with options to fulfill personal philanthropic goals and to align them with Saint John’s organizational needs.

A combined total of $663,616 was contributed to strengthen Communities’ operations and grow the Foundation’s Endowed Funds. Gifts to the Foundation totaled $269,242. At year-end, the Foundation’s portfolio reported an asset balance of nearly $8.25 million after distributions; this was an increase of $1.27 million from the prior year. It was, and is, a big achievement.

Contributions to Saint John’s Communities in 2019 totaled $394,374 with designations to various opera-tional programs and funds. The Annual Campaign’s focus on Capital Projects and on the Symposium On Aging resulted in gifts of nearly $154,000 to underwrite the two initiatives. In addition, $176,260 was gifted to the Employee Holiday Fund–making a powerful statement from residents, families, board members and memorial donors in appreciation for “service excellence” delivered by staff. Charitable giving has increased annually as the culture of philanthropy message continues to be fostered.

NEW FOUNDATION FUNDS IN 2019

THE ANGELA TITUS SCHOLARSHIP FUND FOR DEMENTIA EDUCATION pays homage to the memory of Angie who was a certified dementia care specialist and the Manager of LifeStreams Programs in the care neighborhoods. Opening donor, Renée Anderson, understands the importance to continue this legacy. Annual awards to qualified staff will invest in dementia care best practices.

THE LLOYD LEWIS FELLOWSHIP FUND is a source of additional financial resources for licensed health care employees to attain certification or complete training in best health care practices. Opening donor and Foundation Board member, Lloyd Lewis, constructed the purpose with multiple benefits: awardees will attain tangible evidence of profes-sional stature, residents will have confirmation of best care practices and Saint John’s will be able to promote an enhanced organizational reputation.

We offer deep thanks to the founding donors who now enjoy the deep satisfaction in knowing their contribution has made a difference in our community both now and in our future.

Thank You!Your generosity helps sustain our mission to enrich the livesof older adults.

2019 ACTIVITIESThe 3rd Annual Symposium On Aging with its theme, CREATIVE AGE: Imagination. Insight. Wisdom. was hosted on our campus for a week in March. The audience of professionals from the field of aging services, as well as our staff and residents, gained perspectives on transfor-mational thinking about aging and aging well. Noted faculty and authors from across the coun-try imparted new knowledge and encourage-ment of the unique lessons of longevity.

The Annual Campaign in May had strong results, giving testimony to our community’s engage-ment in a culture of philanthropy. The chart below reflects gifts to both Communities and Foundation, exclusive of the Employee Holiday Fund:

• The 35th Scholarship Award Program in August celebrated twelve applicants who were awarded a total of $25,000 in tuition assistance to earn future degrees and cer-certifications. We continue to be amazed at each student’s commitment to balance work, family, home and studies. Over the last five years, combined scholarships have totaled $163,000 to student awardees—WOW!

• September’s Volunteer Appreciation Event acknowledged the gift of time from the many hands and hearts that give daily support to our community. There are no less than 55 committees, representing about 83% resident involvement in volunteering and

in just as many different ways.

• In October, we partnered with United Way to promote their annual campaign to staff and residents. In 2019, giving totaled nearly $70,000 from residents and employees.

• Impressive! Volunteer Resident Ambassadors Pat and Allen Rieselbach were Saint John’s cheerleaders. We couldn’t have done it without them and all the many givers.

GRANT AWARDSThe Foundation Board reviewed grant applications in 2018 for its annual award distributions from the Fund for the Visually-Impaired. The applicants represented local organizations whose mission provides supportive services to older adults with vision challenges. The Board approved three grants totaling $8,500 to be distributed in the first quarter 2019, to these worthy recipients:

• ABLE: Audio & Braille Literacy Enhance-ment that provides alternative ways for people with print-disabilities to read.

• The Center for Deaf-Blind Persons that provides services needed to minimize the devastating effects of a combined vision and hearing loss upon the individual and family.

• VisionFORWARD that serves to empower, educate, and enhance the lives of individuals impacted by vision loss through all of life’s transitions.

Since the inception of this Fund in 2005, a total of $121,456 has been awarded to support operations of qualifying service agencies.

9

• In late October, the annual Legacy Society Event paid homage to those donors who believe in the extraordinary–the impact a planned gift makes on Saint John’s ability to be an unrivaled provider of premier retirement living.

• Tribute and memorial gifts totaling $44,261 were designated to various funds in honor or in memory of a loved one or neighbor—these are blessed gestures.

• Throughout the year, donors were gratefully acknowledged in three editions of the Enriching Lives newsletter to celebrate joyful giving.

Saint John's Legacy Society

SAINT JOHN’S LEGACY SOCIETYIndividuals who have named Saint John’s as a beneficiary in their estate plans, assigned a portion of their residency refund to the Foundation or contributed to the opening of an endowment fund are members of our Legacy Society. Future or planned gifts at year-end totaled $1,093,657, holding steady at the 2018 value. Two gifts were added and two gifts were distributed in 2019. The new donors are residents who designated a combined total of $62,000 to the Foundation through simple beneficiary refund assignments; both were welcomed in as members. The two estate disbursements received totaled $38,589. We extend thanks to all our members.

SAINT JOHN'S MISSION STATEMENT

Saint John's mission is to enrich the lives of older adults through gracious retirement living, spiritual growth,

cultural and educational opportunities and health care services.
