General Campus Information Birch Creek is located on a beautiful
125-year-old rural property. Dorms and many rehearsal spaces
are
contemporary, with air conditioning. Concert Performances are
scheduled in the historic Dutton barn!

• From Chicago: I-94 North to Milwaukee (90 mi.)
• From Milwaukee: I-43 North to Green Bay (118 mi.), Hwy 57 East
to Sturgeon Bay (38 mi.)
• From Sturgeon Bay: Hwy 42 North to Egg Harbor (16 mi.)
o Note: Hwy 42 (continue straight) splits from Hwy 57 (curves to
right) north of Sturgeon Bay
• From Egg Harbor: Turn right onto County Road E (3 mi.): 3821
County Road E
o Turn right into East (second) driveway; Registration will be
in Rehearsal Center, Juniper Hall
By airplane or bus
• The nearest commercial airport and Greyhound Bus station are
in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
• Shuttle service is available:
Shuttle Service
o Sunday, June 16 and Sunday, June 30 only.
o Please notify the Birch Creek Registrar of your confirmed
travel itinerary as soon as possible
(not later than June 1), to arrange shuttle pick-up and/or
drop-off.
o We ask that flight/bus arrivals and departures be scheduled
for the middle of the day
(between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.) if at all possible, through
Green Bay’s Austin Straubel
Airport or Greyhound Bus station in Green Bay.
o Shuttle Service Fee is $40.00 per trip (each person, one
way).
o Please use the online Shuttle Service Request Form to reserve
your place in the van.

Arrival on Campus • Registration/Check-In will be held on Sunday
afternoon, June 16, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
o Please notify the office if you will need to arrive outside of
regular Registration hours.
Departure from Campus • Students are to leave after the evening
concert on Saturday, June 29.
o Camp counselors will be available Saturday evening to assist
with student check-out. The student dorm must be left clean and in
good repair, or a damage fee will be assessed.
o Students are required to attend the final concert of the
session on Saturday evening, and should depart following the
concert. Saturday evening check-out is available until 11:00PM.
o TIP: Parents/students may check out after the family concert
and before the 7:30 evening concert.
• Off-campus outings o Students may leave the Birch Creek campus
with advance written permission:
▪ Only during free time. ▪ Only with a parent, grandparent or
responsible adult as approved and signed off by the
parents within the Liability Waivers & Permissions form. ▪
Students leaving campus must sign out & back in with the
Counselor on duty. ▪ All curfews must be observed.
Sleeping Arrangements • On-campus residency is required.
• Male and female students stay in separate, air-conditioned
dormitories by gender.
• Dormitories are open-concept; grouped into "pods" of four
bunks each.
• Each bunk has a corresponding dresser and lockable storage
compartment.
• Please bring your own pillow, bed linens (standard twin)
and/or sleeping bag.
• One counselor remains in each dormitory overnight to supervise
students.
Lockers • Instrument Lockers: Students can choose an instrument
locker (if needed) at Registration.
• Dorm Lockers: Each student is provided with a locker in the
dorm area for storage of personal belongings.
• Students are asked to bring one combination lock for their
dorm locker. Students may also rent a combination lock from Birch
Creek for $5.00.
• NOTE: Birch Creek is not responsible for personal possessions.
Please utilize the lockers provided and do not leave electronics
and other valuables unattended.
Private Lessons • Private lessons are available with faculty
members at the rate of $25 - $50 per 30-minute lesson.
• Students are to make arrangements for lessons directly with
the faculty member(s) following the Monday afternoon Student
Orientation Meeting.
• Payment is made directly to the faculty member, at the time of
the lesson.
Out-of-Pocket Expenses • Students may wish to bring spending
money for incidental/optional expenses.
o These may include: snacks, private lessons, shopping, laundry,
and miscellaneous items. Recreational outings are pay-as-you-go and
may include go-carts, mini-golf, ice cream, kayaking.
o We suggest in the range of $50 - $100 depending on the lessons
and activities in which your student plans to participate while
here.
• An ATM machine is not available on campus, and may not be
readily accessible on off-campus outings. Cash and personal checks
should be stored in the dorm locker area.

Typical Student's Day at Birch Creek
Dining
Meals • Three healthful buffet-style meals are prepared daily by
our kitchen staff.
o The kitchen provides vegetarian and nut-free options at every
meal. Other dietary needs will be accommodated. ▪ Please note any
special dietary restrictions/food allergies on the Health &
Medications form.
Snacks • Between meals, limited snacks are available in the
dining room throughout the day (i.e., water,
juice, fruit and granola bars). • Students may bring/purchase
their own snacks to keep in their dorm area.
o Refrigeration is not available. o Please be sure to provide
airtight containers for the storage of any snacks, so as not to
attract
ants. Improperly stored food items may be confiscated.
Schedule
Daily 7:30 – 8:30 Breakfast
8:30 Warm Up. The entire student body warms up together on snare
drum, mallets, or steel pans for the day ahead.
9:00 – 12:00 Class Sessions. Students are broken into 3 groups
which then rotate in small class sessions of 8-10 students. Classes
are hands-on and cover 2 and 4 mallets, snare and orchestral, drum
set, vibraphone and jazz improvisation, marching percussion, hand
drumming, MIDI and electronics, Brazilian and African drumming,
Afro-Cuban Percussion, and Steel Pan. Seminars and master classes
occasionally rotate with small group classes.
12:00 – 12:45 Lunch
1:00 – 3:30 Rehearsals of the steel bands, percussion ensembles,
mallet groups, Latin Percussion groups, Brazilian samba band,
African Ensemble, jazz combos, etc.
3:30 Private lessons, free time (a recreational activity is
usually planned). Additional master classes, focus groups, and
listening sessions, as well as faculty, TA, and guest recitals are
interspersed throughout the week.
Focus groups meet at various times throughout the two weeks.
5:00 Dinner
Non-Concert Nights 6:30 – 9:00 Additional Rehearsals
9:00 Informal get-togethers for drum groups, combos, listening
to great music, etc.
Concert Nights 6:30 Crew members set up the stage
7:00 Gazebo Pre-concert performances
7:30 CONCERT – Typically begins with student soloists, duets,
and ensembles. Almost all Percussion & Steel Band concerts are
performed by faculty and students together, so be prepared to work
hard and make some great music!

CAMPUS RULES AND EXPECTATIONS Thank you in advance for abiding
by these rules and expectations. They have been designed to ensure
your stay at Birch Creek is a safe and pleasant one.
FIRST AND FOREMOST • Smoking, e-cigarettes, drugs and alcohol
are not permitted on campus. Students in violation will be
sent home immediately at parents’ expense.
• No members of the opposite gender are allowed in private
living areas.
• Students are NOT allowed in the faculty or staff living
areas.
Safety • Candles, incense, cooking items or flames of any kind
are not permitted in any campus buildings.
• Walking, jogging, biking, rollerblading, etc. on County E is
not permitted. (This is a heavily used road with traffic moving at
60-65 mph.)
• Pursuant to Wisconsin legislation, weapons or firearms are not
permitted in Birch Creek buildings or anywhere on the Birch Creek
campus.
• Shoes are required outside at all times, except on the sand
volleyball court.
Vehicle Policy • Once on campus, students may NOT ride in
another student’s or a TA’s car.
• Students who have driven their cars to campus must turn in
their car keys at Registration for safekeeping in the office. Keys
will be returned at the conclusion of the session.
• Transportation to all Birch Creek events off campus (outreach
concerts, recreational outings, or medical need) will be provided.
Only licensed and insured drivers (Counselors, Faculty, or
Commercial Bus Service) will be permitted to transport students for
Birch Creek events.
• Students leaving campus with a parent or guardian must have
advance written approval to do so, and must check out and back in
with the Counselor on duty.
Student Behavior Responsibility • Curfews are strictly enforced
and vary depending on day of the week. The demanding schedule
warrants plenty of rest to ensure top productivity. Failure to
comply with curfew and “lights out” policies will initially result
in grounding to campus and a loss of free time activity.
• Students may leave the Birch Creek campus only during free
time and only with a parent, grandparent or responsible adult as
approved in advance in the Liability Waivers & Permissions
form; and must sign out & in with the Counselor on duty.
Curfews must be observed.
• Damage fees will be assessed upon Check-Out if the student’s
area is not left tidy and in good repair.
• Usage of cell phones and other electronic devices will be
limited to specific times of day, as outlined by the Program
Director.
• Lockers are provided for storage of instruments, personal
items, and valuables. Birch Creek is not responsible for lost or
stolen items.
• Students are expected to keep their living areas clean and
participate in helping to clean rehearsal and lounge areas.
Pride: Camp Decorum
• Remember that you represent Birch Creek both on and off
campus. Show respect for those performing and act in a professional
manner on and off the stage.
• When not performing in a concert, you are expected to attend
and sit inside the Barn in a designated area. If concerts are sold
out, we appreciate you giving up your seat to a paying patron.
• Birch Creek reserves the right to dismiss, without refund, any
student who disrupts our learning environment. Any student whose
behavior is contrary to the reputation of Birch Creek and disrupts
the living and learning environment, will be dismissed without
refund.

Concert Information Concert Dates Birch Creek Percussion &
Steel Band performs an evening concert on Thursday and Friday, and
an afternoon concert on Saturday of the first week, and evening
concerts on Wednesday through Saturday of the second week: June 20,
21 & 22; and June 26, 27, 28 & 29.
Special dates of note: Matinee Concert • 3:00 p.m., first
Saturday of the session (6/22)
• Prelude Music in the Gazebo begins at 2:30 p.m. Family Concert
• 1:00 p.m., final Saturday of the Senior Track session (6/29).
• Parents and friends are invited to attend the Family Concert
on the final Saturday afternoon of the session. The concert is free
and all students will perform. It is an informal concert, where
cameras and video recorders are permitted. Feel free to bring a
picnic lunch. Alcohol is not permitted.
Final Session Concert • 7:30 p.m., final Saturday of the Senior
Track session (6/29)
• Prelude Music in the Gazebo begins at 7 p.m.
• Advance Reservations are strongly encouraged for the final
evening concert. Reserve by phone or online.
Purchasing Tickets Ticket Prices • Tickets for evening concerts
are priced at $29.00 for adults, $10.00 for young adults (ages
12-20)
and $6.00 for children (ages 11 and under).
• Tickets are available in a special "Premium Section"
comprising the front 3 rows of the center section. All seats are
$34.
Parent Discount (2 free tickets – any night – General Admission
only) • To receive the 2 free General Admission tickets, please
call the office and mention the parent code.
You WILL NOT be able to obtain the free tickets online.
• We are pleased to offer you 25% off your order(s) of all
tickets when you identify yourself as the parent/guardian of a 2019
Birch Creek student. This discount is available online or by
calling the office (920.868.3763) and enter/mention discount code
BCPARENT19. Code is non-transferrable: valid only for current
parents/guardians as identified on the 2019 Student Admission
Application. Payment must be received at the time of purchase. This
offer may not be used in combination with other discounts or
coupons.

Accommodations for Parents Door County Visitor Bureau Given Door
County’s reputation as a prime vacation destination, finding
accommodations in summer
can be difficult. We highly recommend making advance

said, Egg Harbor and surrounding communities are only 10-20

Auditions Learning Community Placement
All students will audition for placement in one of our unique
Learning Communities. Placement auditions will have three
components: snare drum, keyboard and drum set. In most cases,
All-State audition material, solo and ensemble pieces, or private
study repertoire are appropriate for placement.
Students should prepare each area below to the best of their
ability. Snare Drum
• One concert snare drum solo or etude at an intermediate or
advanced level, or any rudimental snare solo. A second solo in a
contrasting style is encouraged.
• Sight reading Keyboard Percussion (two and four mallet)
• One two-mallet solo or etude at an intermediate to advanced
level.
• An intermediate or advanced four-mallet solo is highly
encouraged.
• Sight reading Drum Set
• Demonstrate basic beats in different styles such as rock,
funk, swing, and Latin. Students who have abilities and interests
in playing piano, or any other percussion instruments such as hand
drums, steel pan, or jazz vibes are encouraged to demonstrate those
talents as well.
NOTE: All applicants will be given a sight-reading audition for
ensemble placements, so be sure to practice your sight reading!

campus (depending on your provider).
Banned Substances Birch Creek is a smoke-free, drug-free, and

requires us to have certain demographic, emergency, and medical

Birch Creek’s national reputation is attributable to the quality
of its students as well as its faculty. We publicize your
activities while at Birch Creek, as well as your accomplishments
elsewhere as appropriate; including your local and school newspaper
if you provide us with that information.
• Photo/Video We ask that any photographs taken or recordings
made while you are a student at Birch Creek remain the property of
Birch Creek and may be used and disseminated by Birch Creek without
further approval and without compensation.
• Social Media Throughout the session, we will post photos,
video clips, updates and announcements on our Facebook page,
session-specific Facebook group, and/or website.
• Permission for Off-Campus Leave There are times when
grandparents or other relatives, friends of the family living in or
visiting the area, and/or parents of other students would like to
take a student off campus. A student may leave the Birch Creek
campus for such activities only with the permission of a parent or
legal guardian, and only if accompanied by the parent, legal
guardian, or a responsible adult designee of the parent or legal
guardian. Sign-In and Sign-Out procedures and all Curfews must be

Health & Medications Form

health history and medical emergency contact information, as well
as:
Authorization of Care If your student falls ill or requires
medical attention while a student at Birch Creek, Birch Creek staff
(or an ambulance in the case of an emergency) will take the student
to one of our local clinics. The Health Care Provider(s) will not
be able to treat your child without this form indicating your
consent to do so. Health History/Allergies Our kitchen staff
prepares vegetarian and nut-free choices for each meal, and can
accommodate other dietary needs when necessary. Insurance Birch
Creek's Limited Liability Insurance covers injury in the event of
accident only. If your son or daughter falls ill, or needs medical
attention for a pre-existing condition or prior injury, he or she
will need to present your insurance information to the Health Care
Provider.
Medications
Wisconsin State Law requires Birch Creek to administer and log
the dispensation of all medications for
students. Please see below for common over-the-counter items
Birch Creek will have on hand; you do
NOT need to bring these. We’ll need a list of all medications
your student will be bringing, and your
consent to administer them (exceptions for emergency/rescue
medications; please see below). Even if
your student will not be bringing and/or taking any medications,
we must have a copy of this form on
file stating that.
Packaging: All medications not on the Birch Creek stock list
should be brought in with you during
Registration. Medications must be in their original, date, and
properly labeled containers.
Rescue/Emergency & Topical Medications: Students requiring
rescue medications such as
asthma inhalers and EPI pens, and students using topical
prescription medications, may keep them if
they are capable of self-administering and agree not to share
them with other students under any
circumstances.
Over-the-Counter Medications: Several common non-prescription
over-the-counter medications
will be kept on-hand and administered by counseling staff (see
list below). You do NOT need to bring
these medications. You may supply an alternative for your
student if you prefer a different
medication be used. The following OTC medications will be
available:

• Advil/Ibuprofen
• Mucinex/Decongestant
• Robitussin/Guaifenesin
• Midol/Acetaminophen-Caffeine-Pyrilamine
Maleate
• Benadryl/Antihistamine

Invoice An invoice outlining all applicable Tuition and Fees,
and Deposit and Balance Due deadlines was sent to you after your
original Acceptance notification email. (Note: additional fees may
apply, if Shuttle Service, etc. is added.)

• First Payment
o A payment of $500 is required within 30 days of Acceptance, to
confirm your enrollment and hold your spot. ▪ Cancellation notice
must be conveyed in writing, and must be received not later than
30
days prior to the beginning of the session. The $100 initial
deposit will be forfeited. ▪ Scholarships: if you have questions
regarding your pending scholarship request and how it
may affect your deposit deadline and/or balance due, please
contact the Registrar at [email protected].
• Balance
o The remaining balance is due, paid in full, 30 days before the
start of the session. ▪ A Statement reflecting current balance is
available upon request. ▪ Late-season acceptances may be given
additional days to pay; please consult your payment
invoice and/or contact the Registrar for details.
• Damage Fee
o If your son or daughter’s living quarters and common areas are
left dirty, items broken, and/or in disarray, damage fees will be
charged for repairs and/or cleaning of the space(s).
