Page 2 2019 ANNUAL REPORT

Senior Pastor Dear Church,

Looking back

through the calendar,

I’m amazed by how

much happened in

2019! We welcomed a

new Organist, Ed West.

We celebrated Tommy

McClinton’s many years

of service to the church.

We hosted Ben Bran-

nan’s ordination to the

ministry of Word and Sacrament, and we said

goodbye to Tim Moe and his family. If my math

is correct, we baptized 15 young people in 2019.

We also held a discernment process, called

Making The Shift. I am very impressed by the

participation. We had 149 at the weekend event,

150 in small groups, and 79 came to the Har-

vesting Event. You participated in the process!

This Annual Report will be published near

the time we debut the six Initiatives that came

out of the Making the Shift Process. I won’t spoil

it here. I will say they are not surprising. Neither

are they magic. The six Initiatives are not a mag-

ic solution to to all of our challenges. They are

the collective voice of the church, as we all have

discerned God’s will. If the Initiatives sound fa-

miliar, it’s because they came out of your mouth.

They are what we, as a church, have created

and spoken together. I’m not saying they’re bor-

ing. I am saying they provide a great direction for

OAPC’s next few years, as we try our best to fol-

low Christ. In my opinion, that is really exciting.

When it comes to 2019, obviously, there’s no

way to list everything God has done in our

church. Obviously there’s no way to thank every-

one. I will simply thank God for sustaining us as

a community of faith, inspiring us to hope and

trust, and sending us out into the world to make

disciples and serve those Christ called “the least

of these, my brothers and sisters.”

Here’s to 2020 and whatever the Good Lord

has in store for OAPC.

God bless, Jeff

Associate Pastor for Compassion

Dear Sisters and

Brothers in Christ, It continues to be a

joy and a privilege to serve the Risen Christ

alongside you! This year has been a time of re-

flection, listening, and discernment in both

Pastoral Care and Mis-sion ministries at OAPC.

Deacons have be-

come more deeply involved in serving members of their DeaconCare groups. Some are reaching

out personally to disciples who seem to be drifting away from the church. Also, they have taken on

oversight of our “hands-on” Caring Ministries. Congregational Care has discerned God’s

call to serve the congregation-at-large, rather than just those who are hurting. They began mak-

ing plans to offer support groups, educational events, and/or enrichment opportunities that will

help disciples live faithfully in their day-to-day lives.

Through prayer, retreats, and conversation, Stephen Leaders have been led to create a vi-

sion for the future of OAPC’s Stephen Ministry program. This vision will begin unfolding in 2020.

Commitment Committee has explored ways to help disciples hear God’s call more clearly and

discover where the Spirit is leading them to serve. They investigated various approaches to connect-

ing disciples with opportunities for service. Mission Committee has begun the process

of relating more deeply with a focused number of

Mission Partners, locally and internationally. Al-so, they informed themselves about immigration

issues and affordable housing. And, of course, our ongoing ministries of compassion engaged

more than 150 people in serving our neighbors, here and beyond.

After a year of “the journey inward,” I am ex-cited to see what God has in store for OAPC in

2020. May we continue to listen for Christ’s call, obey his commands, and follow in his path into

the new year and beyond.

Thank you all for the honor of serving our Lord with you in this place and time.

Blessings, Jane

Youth The youth of OAPC stayed very busy in

2019. We met weekly on Sunday nights and had a range of programs from fellowship to playing our favorite game (Monster) to studying the Bible. Many Bible stories were acted out with varying degrees of creativity and enthusi-asm. We had Youth Sunday in March with 25+ youth participating and one of our seniors preaching.

We also had many well attended youth trips. Both Middle and High School groups went on a ski trip to Winterplace Ski Resort in Ghent, WV. We had 25 youth and adults attend. A great time was had by all and we all returned in one piece! The High School youth spent a week in July atthe Montreat High School Youth Confer-ence. The theme of the conference was Let Love Lead. 9 youth and 2 adults participated. Also during the summer, the youth participated in Mission Mondays. We spent an afternoon at Lige Neighborhood Park reading and playing with neighborhood kids. The youth also spent an afternoon at Urban Ministry Center in Char-lotte. We heard all about the work they do and then assisted in their art studio and helped paint their outdoor benches.

The youth were back to Montreat in Septem-ber for a kick off retreat. We had 26 youth and 4 advisors and spent the weekend growing our re-lationships with each other and with God, and volunteering at Black Mountain Home for Chil-dren.

College-Aged Young Adults Our college students and college-aged

young adults from OAPC, Winthrop and York Tech are continuing to meet on Monday nights in the PSC. We are now officially a Winthrop organization and have joined the WCCM (Winthrop Cooperative Campus Ministries). We are also now officially a UKirk (University Kirk), the denomination’s ministry for campus ministry. Each Monday we have dinner provided by gra-cious church members and then have a pro-gram. Our programs ranged from Bible study, Faith and Film, watching TED Talks and dis-cussing them, and fellowship nights where we play games. (Scattergories is a favorite!) We have about 8-10 attendees each week from Winthrop, York Tech, and college-aged young adults who are working instead of attending school. In January, we attended the College

2019 flew by! As I reflect back on this past year, I am excited by the many things the Christian Education and Fellowship com-mittees did. Preschool and Elementary Children

The number of children at OAPC is growing fast and it is a wonderful sight to see the wave of children coming down for the Children’s Time! To accommodate all of our children we hired new nursery staff. We also have 20 par-ent and other church members who rotate vol-unteering in the nursery during 11:00 worship. Kids’ Kirk has also boomed and we now have 14 youth and adult leaders and 37+ youth and adult volunteers who take turns leading our 4 year olds-1

st graders in worship while their par-

ents worship in the Sanctuary. Staples for the preschool and elementary

year continued: 1. Thanksgiving lunch for preschoolers 2. Christmas parties during Sunday school 3. Church basketball for children age 5-18, 4. Standard Easter Egg Hunt for preschool children and flashlight Easter Egg Hunt for elementary students 5. Butterflies were released in the Memorial Garden on Easter 6. End-of-year swim party for elementary students 7. Elementary children enjoyed several mission projects in Rock Hill. 8. VBS - This year OAPC conducted our very own VBS! Our theme was ReNew: Growing in Faith, Caring for Creation, and Having Fun! It focused on growing our faith and caring for God’s creation. We had 55 children participate and 18 volunteers help throughout the week. 9. We debuted a new nativity play for the Christmas Eve 5 p.m. service. We had 17 children with speaking parts and many more participate as sheep and angels. They worked hard at rehearsal and impressed everyone on Christmas Eve.

Rev. Landon Dillard

Conference at Montreat which had the theme “Compassionate Community.” We took a group of 10 students/chaperones and enjoyed Montreat in the winter!

Adults Programs for adults abounded in 2019. We

had 2 Disciple classes, a Companions class, TOW, multiple Sunday schools classes, Lenten and Advent study groups, Friendship Fellow-ship, PW Circles, and Faith and Film, just to name a few. Fellowship Committee

Highlights include… 1. February’s Chili Cook-off: It was a wonderful church-wide gathering with

Sharon Lee and her family taking home the trophy for their chili.

2. Rally Day Picnic: the picnic was held on the front lawn following worship and was

highly attended. An ice-cream cart and a bouncy house added to the festivities.

3. Church Wide Retreat: This year, the church retreat was held at the SC Inn with a few people staying at Assembly Inn. We had around 90 members in Montreat for the weekend! We enjoyed hiking, eating, and fellowship time. The children especially enjoyed the freedom of running around Montreat.

4. Church basketball: We had a great bas- ketball season! We had 12 teams,107 players, and 20 coaches participate.

A HUGE Thank You to all who made 2019 a wonderful year for OAPC! I am excited about how God is calling us to live, serve, and grow together in 2020! Blessings, Landon

Director of Music Ministry

This was a significant year in the life of OAPC, with several events of note. The year began with the farewell to long-time organist and staff member, Susan Read, and welcoming Ed West to the staff as new or-ganist. Ed hit the ground running in participating in the dedication concert of our newly renovated and enhanced, Casavant

Organ. The first and foremost goal of our choir music ministry is to support corporate worship, and all our choirs have been actively involved in worship on a regular basis. The 2019 choir program year concluded for most choirs at the annual MusicFest celebration at the end of April. MusicFest this year included a performance of the musical, "Moses and the Freedom Fanatics", by Hal H. Hopson. This was staged and performed by the combined Holy COW! Children's and Agape Youth Choirs, ac-companied by Agape Accompanist, Gina Jones, and the Revelation Ringers Handbell Choir. Our church was honored to join with our parent congregation, First Presbyterian Church, Rock Hill, in celebration of their 150

th anniver-

sary. This celebration included a joint concert in September combining our Chancel (adult) Choir with the adult choir of First Presbyterian in a full performance of Gloria, by Antonio Vivaldi, ac-companied by a professional orchestra. Our choir/music scholarship program has continued to enhance our connection with Winthrop Uni-versity, and we welcomed three new scholar-ship students to the OAPC family. The 2019-20 Music at Oakland concert series began with a well-attended and lively concert in November with the Sandlapper Singers from Columbia, SC. The year ended on musical high notes in the Advent/Christmas seasons, with Commun-ion, a jazz oriented service, Holiday Healing,

Lessons and Carols, Westminster Towers Com-munion, Agape Alumni homecoming, and Christmas Eve services. I have been excited for the many ways God has been at work, and con-tinues to work at OAPC. As I now retire as Mu-sic Director, I am grateful for being part of a ministry that has touched many lives. I am confi-dent that God will continue to build on this in the days, weeks, months, and years ahead. Tim

Session Committee Reports

Christian Education Committee

Members: Joanna Swofford Chair, Alyssa Har-dy, Vice-Chair; Leigh Meetze, Preschool Chair; Anna Echols, Elementary Chair; Sharon Lee, Youth Chair; Sally Lenski-Brown, Library; Mary Love Hammond, Archive, and Rev. Landon Dillard, ex-officio. This year OAPC conducted our very own VBS! We gathered each morning in the Sanctu-ary for music and prayer to start our day. Then children rotated through four stations: Bible, games, music, crafts. We had 55 children partic-ipate and 18 volunteers help throughout the week by teaching our preschoolers, shepherd-ing groups between stations, leading stations, teaching the children about the HOPE garden and how to grow things, and preparing and serv-ing snack and lunch. Our theme was ReNew: Growing in Faith, Caring for Creation, and Having Fun! It focused on growing our faith and caring for God’s creation. We read two main stories:

1. The creation stories in Genesis led us in-to conversations about how God created everything and then created us to help care for the earth and all that is in it.

2. The parable of the sower led us into con-versation about how God’s love is a seed growing in us. Seeds start out small, and then get watered and cared for, and then they grow bigger. Kind of like our faith. When we start out we don’t know much about God, but as we get bigger and as people tell us and teach us more about God, our faith grows!

Thank you to all of our volunteers for making

VBS 2019 at OAPC a success for the Kingdom!

Commitment Committee

Members: Anita Case, Chair; Rebecca Evers,

Vice Chair; Ashley Flynn, Dena Kelly, Steven

Moser, Sue Williams, and Jane Summey Mul-

lenix, ex-officio.

The Commitment Committee has focused

our efforts this year on studying several books

and scripture to better understand how OAPC

can help disciples discern their gifts and God’s

call for their lives. We made some changes to

the Every Member Has A Call program to im-

prove congregational engagement in ministry

and service opportunities, resulting in an in-

crease in participation of disciples in the minis-

tries of OAPC. We have explored ways to sup-

port OAPC disciples in discerning their gifts and

their call from God. We look forward to new op-

portunities from this committee in 2020.

Communications and Technology

Chair; Corrie Brannan, Dennis Haire, Brian Ha-

mel, Charles Hardy, Tom Kelly, Jeff Lenertz,

Bob McCann, Keith Oliver, Jimmy Robinson,

Rett Rutland, David Van Zile; and Jeff Bryan,

Louise Kerr ,and Lisa Whisenant, ex officio.

During 2019 our main focus was to be sure

all elements of our recording and production

equipment was meeting the needs of our mem-

bers and guests as they watch services via live

streaming, our website, or on local cable. We

updated the software that controls the electronic

door system so we can be sure our staff and

members are safe. We also have investigated

and are currently working on placing cameras at

our main door access points, this is again for the

safety of our members, guests, and staff. We

have updated various electronic media equip-

ment so that our teachers, pastors, and present-

ers have up-to-date options. We look forward to

continuing to figure out the best methods for

communicating the activities, events and mis-

sions of OAPC to our wonderful members,

guests, and local community.

Congregational Care

Members: Debbie Love, Chair; David Hyatt, Vice-Chair; Pat Calkins, Janet Duffy, Donna Hickey, Cathie Hopkins, Jeanne James, Barba-ra Kurz, Cindy Mayfield, Carol McCann, Mar-tee Patton, Barb Penny, George Sawyer, and Sandra Thomas The Committee maintained oversight of the Congregational Care Ministry Teams, which in-clude Assistance Meals, Bereavement Meals, Baptism Books, Card Ministry, Flower Delivery, Helping Hands, Holiday Flowers, One Another-ing, Prayer Shawls, Quilt/Sewing, and Stephen Ministry. These teams were very active throughout the year. During the second half of 2019, the Commit-tee, with Session’s approval, transferred over-sight of the ministry teams to the Diaconate, with each team having a Deacon liaison. The budget of the Diaconate and the Ministry Teams remain under the Congregational Care Committee. In addition, the Committee will work in 2020 to establish shorter-term programs to satisfy other needs of the congregation. These programs could include new parenting classes, or financial planning for growing families, or CPR classes at various times of the year. The Committee will begin generating ideas in early 2020. If anyone has a suggestion, feel free to contact the committee chair or vice-chair.

Evangelism Committee

Members: Keith Morton, Chair; Charlie McDow, Vice Chair; Jenn Williamson, and Jeff Bryan, ex-officio The purpose of the Evangelism Committee is to welcome visitors and to facilitate the Dis-covery Classes. Four Discovery Classes were held in 2019. Twenty-five new disciples joined OAPC after attending the Discovery Classes. The Friendship Registers are collected after worship. Contacts are made with all first- time visitors and a pound cake will be delivered if de-sired by the visitor. Frequent visitors are con-tacted and encouraged to continue to worship with us and to attend a Discovery Class. Con-tacts are made by phone, e-mail, text messag-ing and postal delivery. The Discovery Classes provide visitors an avenue to church member-ship and to learn more about our local congre-gation and the PCUSA in general. Lemonade on the Lawn was hosted in May. The annual Rock Hill Christmas Parade pro-vides an opportunity to dispense hot chocolate and plenty of smiles and handshakes. These events are staffed by OAPC volunteers. The Evangelism Committee will continue to emphasize our congregation as a welcoming church for all people.

2019 ANNUAL REPORT Page 7

At the start of 2019, the Finance Committee discussed and recommended a proposal to Session for the 2018 budget surplus. One new committee member, Anne Lambert, joined in January 2019. The FC also took on the role as Stewardship Committee in 2019. Our theme was “Discipleship in Action.” Many thanks to Leslie Bickford, Patrick Williamson, and Les Dickert for sharing their stewardship thoughts in the weeks leading up to Steward-ship Sunday.

Finance Committee 2019 Results --- Overall, our contribution revenue for 2019 came in $31k ahead of budget ($1.143MM vs $1.111MM). This is primarily a result of new/non-pledged contributions. — For 2019, we ended the year with a $14,894 deficit. Although the committees did a good job of staying within their budgets, there were three significant unbudgeted events which accounted for the deficit. 1) Extensive sewer line repairs ($47,000). 2) Replacement of an HVAC unit ($7,000). 3) Making the Shift ex-penses ($7,000). We should be proud that all of the committees continue to be excellent stew-ards of the gifts God has provided us. 2020 Budget ---Pledge cards received for 2020 were flat compared to 2019 ($967K). Out of 268 pledge cards received, 119 increased their pledges for an impact of $44K, and we had 29 new units for an impact of $42K. This was partially offset by a number of families moving or retiring to other communities or congregations. A summary of the 2019 actual financial and the 2020 budget is included in this report (page 10.) If you would like a detailed report (13 pages) including restricted accounts, Lisa Whisenant in our church office is always willing to email or mail you a hard copy. Harry Emerson, Church Treasurer, and Paul Lee, Chair of the Finance Committee for 2020, are both available if you have questions or comments. Note: please see the Financial Report com-mentary following the 2019 actual and 2020 budget, pages 10 and 11.

Missions Committee Members: Fred Smith, Chair; Mary Ann McDow, Vice Chair; Mary Kathryn Black, Han-nalie Ferguson, Donna Hickey, Barbara Kurz, George Sawyer, Lynn Snowber-Marini, Sue Williams, and Jane Summey Mullennix, ex-officio; Weenie Daniel served as member-at large for special offerings. A highlight of 2019 Missions Committee ac-tivities was a focus on serving our neighbors on our southern border. Our support continued for our missionaries Mark Adams and Miriam Mal-donado Escobar working with the Presbyterian Border Ministry in Agua Prieta, Mexico, where Mark has served since 1998. As US coordina-tor of the binational ministry Frontera de Cristo, Mark helps lead six ministry areas, including the Just Trade Center, which aims to reproduce the success of the Café Justo (formerly Just Coffee) cooperative. Because of the funds giv-en to Café Justo through OAPC’s Alternative Gift Fair, three new coffee growers were able to be added to the Cooperative. OAPC also sells Café Justo in support of this mission, and OAPC disciples Mary Ann and Clarkson McDow traveled to Mexico as part of the Bor-der to Border mission to strengthen relation-ships and deepen cross-cultural understanding. Additionally, two children of this church, Angela Williams (a candidate for ministry) and Nate Williams (a Young Adult Volunteer) served in mission at the southern border. An immigration issues team was formed at OAPC as an outgrowth from TOW stud-ies, to encour-age sharing God’s love with our migrant neighbors, and OAPC support-ed Lily Pad Ha-ven, an organi-zation fighting human traffick-ing in South Carolina.

Our focus was in the Sanctuary where we had the trim professionally painted. We re-placed and repaired the lighting over the altar and choir areas. LED lights were used as re-placements which will hopefully give us many years of use.

Worship Committee Members: Brenda Nicholson, Chair, Kat West, Vice Chair; Ed Duffy, Lucille Harper, Maddie Modla, Brittany Morgan, Richard Nicholson (Head Usher Coordinator), Bobbie Roberts, Mary Rogers, and Tim Moe and Jeff Bryan, ex officio. The Worship committee focused on evalu-ating and updating some of the volunteer posi-tions that are the responsibility of the commit-tee. The church staff requested that the Head Usher position be moved from the officer du-ties and a new sub-committee formed. Ten head ushers were recruited to support usher-ing duties on Sunday mornings as well as re-cording attendance and the lock up of the church. Usher recruitment was expanded to families with children. Ushering is a good way to encourage youth to participate in the Wor-ship service. Communion preparation was ex-panded to a small committee for preparation and clean up. World Communion was observed with the use of pottery and tablecloths collected from around the world. It was a beautiful display of other cultures celebrating the Lord’s Supper. Oakland hosted a community ecumenical thanksgiving service this year. Attendance was wonderful and the service encouraged partici-pation in other Christian worship styles that recognized our differences in worshiping the same Lord and Savior.
