Thisisanoverviewandreflectionofthe2019-2020academicyear.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
• AcademicSuccesso FraternityandSororitymemberscontinuetoexcelintheclassroomthroughoutthe
academicyearattainingacommunityFall2019GPAof3.24(vs.All-StudentGPAof3.15)andacommunitySpring2020GPAof3.54(vs.All-StudentGPAof3.47).AllofourchaptersendedtheSpring2020semesterbeingabovea3.0GPA.
• LeadershipDevelopment:o Createdand/oradjustedprogrammingbasedonstudentfeedbackandlocal/national
trends:§ HostedoursecondSophomoreLeadershipRetreattoengageandfurtherthe
educationofsophomoresinthecommunity.§ SelectedandtrainedofficersfortheinauguralGreekProgrammingBoardthatwill
executelarge-scale,communitywideeventsandalleviatetheworkloadonourgoverningcouncilofficers.
§ CreatedaChapterAccreditationProgram(CAP)thatwasintroducedinMarchandwillbeimplementedinthe2019-20academicyear.Fraternalorganizationsarerequiredtotakepartinthisannualreviewthatwillholdorganizationstomeetingminimumexpectationsofafraternity/sororityattheUniversityofUtah.Thisprogramisalsohasarecognitionpieceaswell.RecognitionwasgiveninApril2020.
o Collectedacomprehensivelistofcommunityservicehoursperformedandphilanthropicdonationsgiventhroughouttheacademicyear.Thecommunityreported16,498servicehoursperformedaswellas$202,471.91donatedintheFall2019semester.FortheSpring2020semester,1,808servicehourswereperformedand$337,500.63donatedtovariouscauses.TheSpring2020effortsweregreatlyimpactedbycancelledeventsduetoCOVID-19.
• RetentionandGrowtho Attainednewandupdateddatadisplayingthecommunity’sretentionandgraduaterates.
• Awards&Recognitiono PanhellenicCouncilwasstillrecognizedfortheiraccomplishmentsthe2019yearinthree
awardareas–Three-Star(toplevel)inCampusCollaborations,Three-Star(toplevel)Innovation,andTwo-Star(middlelevel)inAccountability.
o ThestaffwereinvitedtopresentattheAnnualEducationConferencefortheNationalPanhellenicConference(NPC).
ONEUNIVERSITY
TosupporttheUniversityofUtah’sinitiativetobe“OneUniversity”,theOfficeofFraternityandSororityLifehasstrengthenourcampuspartnershipswiththeCenterofStudentWellness,theOfficeofAdmissions,theOfficeofStudentAccountabilityandSupport,theCenterforCareerandProfessionalDevelopment,theAthleticsdepartment,aswellasstrivingtoutilizemoreon-campusservicesinsteadofoutsourcing.AsastaffwebelievethatitisourroletoconnectourstudentstovariouscampusresourcesandadvocateforourstudentstobeengagedandinvestedinthecurrentstatusoftheUniversityofUtah.Weregularlyinvitecampuspartnerstomeetingswiththechaptersand/orthecommunityandtrytoserveasabridgeinthatconnection.

Asastaff,wevaluethiselementofcampuslife.Weregularlyengageinwebinarstolearnmore,takepartoflearningopportunitiesatconferences,andinfusethistopicintoourconversationsandworkshopswithstudents.ThroughournewlycreatedChapterAccreditationProgram,chapterswillneedtoengageinatleastoneeventthatfocusesonaculturalcompetencyaspartoftheircompliancewithbeingrecognizedoncampus.Throughoutthecourseofthe2020-2021academicyear,wewillbeworkingwithStudentDiversityandInclusiontocreatecurriculumforourcommunitytoengagein.Pleasenote:AjointresolutionwaspresentedtoASUUfromBSUinJuly2020.Detailsandplansregardingplansaddressingthepointsconcerningfraternityandsororitylifefromtheresolutionwillbeaddressedinthe2020-21annualreportasthisreportreflectsthe2019-2020academicyear.
COVID-19IMPACTS&ADAPTIONS
Covid-19hasforcedourstaffandourstudentstoshiftthewaythatfraternitiesandsororitiesoperate.ThishasprimarilybeenthroughZoomforchapteroperations–meetings,education,etc.Shiftingourworktovirtualhaspresentedsomeinterestingchallengesinregardtorecruitmentefforts,typicalmarketingandpromotions,andmembershipengagementopportunities.Ourstudentsandleadersweretornbetweenembracingthisnewrealityandbeingreluctanttodoingso.Mostoftheseeventshavebeentraditionallybeendonein-person.WehavedoneourbesttorolemodelthewaybyofferingeducationonhowtoutilizethevariousfeaturesofZoomaswellasgeneratingideasofwhatcouldbeforeventsthathavehappenedin-persontovirtualdeliveries.Thishasbeeninterestingwithseveraltrialsanderrorsbutmostlytriumphs.
DuetoCOVID-19,wedidhavetocancelseveraleventsthatourstudentslookforwardtoallyear.OneofthoseeventswasGreekWeek.ThisisaweekofactivitiesthatstudentsstartpreparingforinJanuaryandtheyweresadthatitdidn’thappen.Sadly,nothavingthiseventandbeingsenthomewasreallyhardforanumberofourstudentsandhardforyoustudentleaders.Inadditiontothis,wepostponedourFraternityandSororityLifeAwardstomid-April.Whilechaptersandmembersstillreceivedtheirrecognition,itwasn’tthesamedoingitonlineasitisin-person.Bothofourcouncilscancelledeventstosendseniorsoffaswell.Whilethestudentsweremostlyunderstandinginthespringsemester,thishasbeentoughforthem.
Asfortheofficeandthestaff,wespentmostofthesummerworkingfromhome.However,wedidspendtimepreparingforourtimeintheoffice.Todoso,wepurchasedPPEandsignagetosupportsafetyandprotection.Sincebeingintheofficeinmid-AugusttolateSeptember,weutilizedourplanscreatedoverthesummertolimitthenumberofpeoplecomingintotheoffice.Thiswaslimitedasmanyofourservicesandprogramscanandhavebeenofferedvirtually.Chapteroperationslikebills,membershipupdatesandotherpaperworkhavebeentransitionedtoonlineplatformsandmeetingswithstudentshavehappenedoverthetelephoneorZoom.

AsperournewAcademicPolicyforfraternitiesandsororities,whenachaptersfailstomeetorexceedachapterGPAof2.95thatsemester,thechapterwillbeplacedonacademicprobation.Thisprobationisatieredsystemthatrequireschaptersofconcerntodiscusssupportandaddresstheeducationalneedtosupportthechapter.ThispolicywasimplementedinSpring2019.IntheFall2019,threechaptersdidnotmeetthe2.95GPAstandard.IntheSpring2020,allchapterachievedthisstandard.Completesemesterreportsareattachedonpages32and33ofthisdocument.LeadershipDevelopment:
o NewMemberOrientation
NewMemberOrientationwasheldonSeptember29,2019andFebruary19and20,2020.NewMemberOrientationisaprogramforthenewestmembersofthecommunityasanopportunityforthemtolearnmoreaboutthelargerGreekcommunitythattheyhavejoined.Chapterswe’retoldthat60%oftheirnewmemberclassesneededtoattendtomeettherequirementfortheChapterAccreditationProgram.Thecurriculumofthiseventispresentedbystudentleaders,Universityadministrators,andcampuspartners.Topicsofdiscussionincludededucationonalcoholawareness,riskreduction,sexualassault,timemanagement,academictips,healthyrelationships,roleofthegoverningcouncilsandsocialmediaawareness.o HomecomingandSongfestThepurposeofHomecoming,istocelebratetheUniversityofUtahandshowschoolspirit.WithGreekmembersbeingsomeofthemostinvolvedandleadersoncampus,theyleadthewayinparticipatinginHomecomingevents.Homecomingeventsincludesasigndecoratingcompetitiontoshowschoolspiritandbedisplayedthroughoutcampus.ThisreplacedthetraditionalHouseDecoratingContest,wherechapterhomesweredecoratedtoshowtheirSchoolSpirit.Thedecorationofhomeslimitedwhoandhowmany

organizationscouldparticipate.ThissigndecoratingcompetitionwasopentoallregisteredstudentorganizationstoparticipateinandwasrunincollaborationwithASUU.SongfestisthemosthighlyanticipatedannualeventamongtheGreekCommunity.2019wasthe100thanniversaryofthiseventoncampus,whichmakesitoneofthelongeststandingtraditionson-campus.Songfestisacompetitioninwhicheachchapterchoreographsasonganddanceroutine.Thecelebrationengagedalumni,UniversityAthleticsandthepepband.The2019winnerofsongfestwasDeltaGammasorority.TheinauguralGreekProgrammingBoard(GPB)hostedacoupleofothereventsthroughouttheweekofHomecomingtohelpbuildschoolspirit,engagementincampusandgeneralexcitement.TheGPBhostedyardgameschallengeonPresident’scircle,socialmediachallengesonInstagramaswellasacannedfooddrivetobenefittheFeedUPantry.TheoverallwinnerofHomecomingwasKappaKappaGammasorority.Thisyear,andmovingforward,thewinnerofHomecomingisabletopicktheirGreekWeekpartner.o GreekCouncilRetreatOnDecember11,2019,theInterfraternityCouncil(IFC)andPanhellenicCouncil(PHC)officersparticipatedinaday-longtraining.Thepurposeofthetrainingwastohelpthe11studentleaderswhowereelectedandvolunteertoleadtheirrespectivecommunitieswiththeinformationthattheyneedtodososuccessfully.Beingastudentleaderatthislevelisauniqueopportunitythatrequiresmenandwomentoreceivesomeelevatedleadershipdevelopment,high-levelthinkingandinsightintopolicydevelopmentandcurrentpractices.TheretreatcoveredthedifferencebetweenOfficeofFraternityandSororityLife(FSL)policiesandcouncilbylaws,aswellasFSLprogramsversuscouncilprograms.Wediscussedvalues-baseddecisionmaking,riskmanagementpolicies,expectationsandgoal-setting.
o InstallationCeremonyGreekCouncilOfficers,studentswhovolunteertobetheleadersoftheGreekCommunity,areelectedeachNovember.Aslatingcommitteesrecommendwhichstudentsshouldserveasofficersanddelegatesfromeachcouncilthenvotetoaccept,decline,orchangetheslate.Onceofficershavebeenelected,theOfficeofFraternityandSororityLifecelebratesthenewlyslatedofficerswithanOfficerInstallationCeremony.ThiseventwashostedonDecember2,2019.TheceremonyincludestheprecedingGreekCouncilPresidentsspokeaboutthesuccessesandchallengesoftheyearaswellaspresentedthenewofficersfortheupcomingyearwithanoathofoffice.Newlyelectedofficersarepinnedatthisceremonyasasymbolofthestartoftheirtermandcelebratewiththeirconstituents,friendsandfamily.
o ChapterPresidentsWorkshopOnJanuary8,2020,theOfficeofFraternityandSororityLife(FSL)hostedaChapterPresident’sworkshop.Thisworkshopreplacedtheretreatthathadhappenedinpreviousyearsbasedonlogisticsandfeedbackfrompaststudentleadersthattheeithertheretreatwastoolongand/ortooktoomuchtimeawayfromtheirchapter.Anotherissuethatweranintointhepastisthatinter/nationalorganizationswillhosteducationalopportunities

forPresidentssuchasacademies,conferences,retreats,etc.,thatPresidentsmustattendtokeeptheirleadershipposition.Becauseofthis,weoftendidn’thaveeveryprimarychapterleaderattendbutinsteadanotherchapterleader,whichchangedthedynamicoftheexperience.Theworkshop,inthisformat,allowedforallofthePresidentstobepresentbecauseitwasduringtheschoolweekandstudentswereon-campus.Atthisworkshop,wecoveredtopicsthatconsistedofvalues-baseddecisionmaking,thesemestercalendar,andFSLpoliciesandexpectations.Throughoutthisworkshop,weinvitedeachchapter’snewmembereducatorstoattendwiththePresidentssowecouldcovertheUniversity’sstanceonhazingaswellashaveconversationsabouthazingprevention.Wealsoinvitedchapter’ssocialchairstobepartofourconversationonriskmanagementandreviewoftheFraternalInsuranceProgrammingGuidelines(FIPG)policies.Thiswasdonetofosterthepromotionofvaluesandsafetywithinthecommunity.FIPGareeventplanningguidelinesthatmostinter/nationalorganizationsexpecttheirchapterstofollowintoensurethateventsarebeingplannedsafelyandfollowingtheirinsurancestandards.o SophomoreLeadershipRetreatOntheweekendofFebruary14–16,2020,theOfficeofFraternityandSororityLife(FSL)hostedthesecondSophomoreLeadershipRetreat.Asastaff,wewouldoftenhearfeedbackfromchapterandcouncilleadersthatthereareanumberofresourcesandenergythatfocusonfreshmanornewmembers,thatweseesophomoremembers“fallthroughthecracks”morethananyothergroup,whichweknowmirrorsthenationaltrendandconversationaroundthegeneralcollegiatesophomoreexperience.Basedonthiswecreatedanopportunitytoconnectwithsophomoresacrossthecommunityandhavethembeexposedtoandengageinhigherlevelconversationsaboutthestateofthecommunity,developasleadersandweighinonthefuturedirectionandfocusonthefraternityandsororitycommunity.Forthisexperience,thereweretwostudentsfromeachchapter,aswellascouncilleaders,whohelpedtofacilitatethisexperiencethatwasledbyTinaVanSteenbergen.Tinadesignedthecurriculumtofocusonelevatingone’sleadershipthroughauthenticandinclusiveleadership,leadingchallengingtimes,andcommunityvalues.Duringthisexperience,theparticipantsdiscussedissuesandconcernswithinthecommunityaswellasareasofgrowth.
o GreekWeekEachyeartheGreekcommunityhostsGreekWeek,aweektocelebratetheGreekCommunityasawholeandprovideopportunitiesforchapterstobreaksocialbarriersandcometogether.Thisyear’sweekwassupposedtotakeplaceonMarch23-27,2020.However,thiswascancelledduetoCOVID-19.
o ChapterAccreditationProgram
ThisyearwelaunchedandrecognizedchaptersfortheiraccomplishmentsviaournewChapterAccreditationProgram(CAP).Thispurposeofthisprogramistoensurethatorganizationsarerelevanttotheirinter/nationalorganization,governingcouncilandtotheUniversityofUtah’sexpectations.Thisannualreviewisareflectionofwhattheorganizationhasaccomplishmenttoenhancethemembershipsexperienceandeducation

throughoutthecalendaryear.Theareasofaccreditationare:academicsuccess,membershipdevelopment,communityoutreachandphilanthropicendeavors,retentionandgrowth,chapteroperationsandriskmanagementandreduction.Theareaofmembershipdevelopmentfocusesonvariousareasincluding:leadershipdevelopment,culturalcompetencyeducation,healthyrelationshipandsexualmisconductawareness,hazingprevention,alcohol/otherdrugeducation,healthandwellnesseducation,familyengagement,alumni/aerelationsaswellasfaculty/staffoutreach.Fororganizationstobeingoodstanding,organizationsmustachieveat70%orThreeStarStanding.Resultsfromtheprogramarelistedstartingonpage27ofthisreport.
Thiswasdevelopedin2018andreleasedinearly2019forchapterstoengageinandcompleteduringthe2019calendaryear.Chaptersreceivednotificationoftheirstatusduringthe2020FraternityandSororityLifeAwardsCeremony.Unfortunately,duetoCOVID-19thisceremonywascancelledandheldvirtuallyinstead.

o GreekLeadershipRiskPreventionWorkshopsandMeetingsTheOfficeofFraternityandSororityLifestaffheldtwoworkshopsthisyearforstudentleaderswhichoutlinedriskmanagementpoliciesandproceduresthatgovernthecommunityaswellasworkshopsonthetopicofnewmembereducationandhazingprevention.OnAugust21,2019,thestaffhostedtwoworkshopsforNewMemberEducatorsonbestnewmemberpracticesandaddressthetopicofhazing.NewMemberEducatorsjoinedtheChapterPresidentsmeetingonJanuary8,2020toreceivethiseducation.Atthismeeting,thesocialchairsjoinedtheChapterPresidentsmeetingtodiscusshowbothleadershippositionscanbestsupporttheirRiskManagers.Withinthefirsttwoweeksofeachsemester,thestaffengagedinone-on-onemeetingswitheachRiskManagerstoensurethattheyunderstoodthefinerpointsofthepolicy,expectationsandhowtoleadthechapterinfollowingthispolicy.Wedecidedtodothisbecauseofthepreviousfeedbackthatwe’vereceivedandbelievethatitallowedforabetterconversationregardingriskmanagementandprevention.Whilethishasprovidedmoreworkforthestaff,wehaveseensuccessinanincreaseamountofcommunicationandlevelofunderstandingwithintheseofficers.Inadditiontothis,theChapterPresidentsandRiskManagersmeetmonthlywiththeInterfraternityCouncilandPanhellenicCouncilmonthlytodiscussrelevantissuestotheircommunity.
o Anti-HazingAwarenessandPreventionWeekNationalHazingPreventionWeekfellonourHomecomingweekin2019.Thecommunityengagedineducationtheweekpriorandafterthroughsocialmediacampaignsandasigningapledgeagainsthazing.Thestaffwereinvitedtochaptermeetingstodiscussandaddresshazingaswell.
o GreekCouncilHearingandConductBoardsEachcouncilandtheConductBoardsmeetasneededtosanctionfraternityandsororitychapterswhofailtoabidebytheGreekCouncilConstitutionandBylaws.Sanctionsaredispensedinanefforttoeducatemembersandchaptersratherthansimplypunish.MembersandchaptersarealsosummonedtomeetwiththeConductBoardinalessformalmeeting,whichisledbyGreekCouncilexecutivemembers,whenconcerningorinappropriatebehaviorisrecognized.Thegoaloftheseconversationsistoeducateandaid

thememberorchapterbeforetheissuerisestothelevelofhearingwiththeConductBoard.Additionally,individualPanhellenicchaptersaregovernedbytheirownnationalumbrellaorganizationthatoverseethejudicialreportingandsanctioningprocess.TheInterfraternitychapters’judicialreportingandsanctioningprocessareguidedbythebestpracticesofeachcampus.ThispastspringtheInterfraternityCouncilstartedaconversationwiththeOfficeofStudentAccountabilityandSupport(SAS)tolearnofwaysthatIFCcanpartnerwithSASonhearingcases,creatingoutcomesandholdingchaptersaccountable.
o DYADStrategiesTheOfficeofFraternityandSororityLifecontractsDYADStrategiesLLC(“DYAD”)toconductresearchonandprovideguidanceonthefraternity/sororitycommunity.Oncefinallyapproved,thesurveytookplaceinJanuary2020.Therewere44%ofourfraternitycommunitywhoparticipatedand52%ofoursororitycommunitywhoparticipatedinthestudy,697studentstotal(49%ofthecommunity)participated.Thissurveyreviewedthestudentsbehaviorandtolerancesaroundfraternalconformity,hazingrationale,hazingtolerance,organizationalcommitment,organizationalidentification,importanceofsocialstatus,unethicalorganizationalbehavior,perceivedorganizationsupport,brotherhood/sisterhood,alcoholconsumptionbehaviors,andfraternal/communityrelations.WewentwiththissurveyinstrumentovercreatingourownbecauseweareabletocompareourcommunitytotheotheracrossthecountryincludingPAC-12institutions,DYADaretheleadingexpertsinFSLespeciallyforthesetopics,andthereareanumberofinter/nationalorganizationsthatutilizeDYADaswell.Thisallowsforthisinformationtobesharedeasilyandwidelywithourstakeholders.

TherecruitmentperiodstartedwithaninformationsessionhostedbytheIFCthatexplainedtherecruitmentprocess,termsthattheymenmayhear,thefinancialaspectoffraternities,howtoaskgoodconversationsduringtheprocessaswellaswhattowear.TheIFCofferedthissessiontwicetoaccommodateinterestedstudentsschedules.Wethenlearnedthatmengoingthroughtheprocesshadabetterunderstandingofhowtobesuccessfulintherecruitmentprocess.Therewere231menthatjoinedtheIFCcommunityduringFall2019.DuringtheSpring2020semester,108menjoinedtheIFCcommunity.
o PanhellenicCouncil(PHC)Recruitment“FindYourSunshine”,wasthethemeforSororityFormalRecruitment,whichtookplacefromAugust30–September3,2019.Tofocusonthefoundationalprinciplesofwhatitmeanstobeinasorority,thewomenofthePanhellenicCouncilchosetomakevaluestheirfirstpriority.Avalues-basedrecruitmentmodelwasimplementedforthefourthtime.ThegoalwastochallengechaptersandthePanhellenicCounciltobecomemoregenuine,vulnerable,andtohavemeaningfulconversations.ThePHCwantedtoensurethatourrecruitmentpracticesattractedandretainedqualitymemberswhowerededicatedtomakingthecommunitybetter.Duringthisrecruitmentprocessduringthefallsemester,wewereabletoplaceormatch309womenwhoparticipatedintheprocess,whichis78%ofthewomenwhoparticipated.Inthespringsemester,28womenjoinedthePanhelleniccommunity.

Astheinstitutioncontinuestogrowandtheexpectations/demandsalsoshift/develop,wewillneedtogrowourstaffandofficespacetosupportthecommunitygrowth.Theburnoutandworkloadofthestaffcontinuestobeaconcern.Turnoverinthefraternity/sororityadvisingindustryishigh,andforgoodreason.Campus-basedFSLprofessionalsareexpectedtodomanythingsforstudents–education,compliancetraining,programming,development,andmore.Asgeneralists,weareexpectedtodoanumberofthingsforthestudentsaswellasmovingtheneedleforwardoninitiativesanddevelopmentsuchascurriculumdevelopment,fundraisingandassessment.Thelackofinfrastructurewillcontinuetoincreasestaffburnoutandturnover.Inadditiontothis,anotherconcernisourbudget.MostofourstaffsalariescomefromGreekduesthatarepaideachsemester.Ifmembershipisn’tsustainable,salariesmaybeimpacted.However,withoutadequatestaff,servicesandeducationforanactive,high-riskcommunitycouldbecompromisedandhavelargerimplicationsforthememberexperience.Whilethecurrentstructureandspacearemeetingourneeds,thiswon’tlastforlong.Wearestartingtooutgrowthespace.Thereislimitedstoragespaceaswellaslimitedspaceforourorganizationstomeettoconductbusiness.Onceitisdeemedappropriatetoaddanotherstaffmembertothestaffingstructure,wewillhavetoconvertmoreofthestudentspacetoofficespacetosupportthatstaffmember’soperationalneeds.Thiswillmakethecurrentofficespaceevensmallerandlessfunctionalforstudents.ImpactsfromCOVID-19COVID-19hasforcedourofficeandtheorganizationstopivotouroperations.Mostofthemeetings,eventsandactivitiesthatourcommunityengagesinaretraditionallydonein-personhaveshiftedtozoomorothervirtualplatforms.Forsomechaptersthishasbeenaneasyshiftbutforsomethishasnot.Currently,studentsaremakingdowithvirtualexperiencesandgettinginnovative.AswethinkaboutCOVID-19continuinginfall2020andintospring2021,weknowthatstudentsaregrowingrestlessastheyarewantingthistoendand“returntonormal”.Ourstaffhasworkedwiththecommunitytohostsomewell-planned,thought-outin-personeventsthatfollowtheSLCguidelines.However,aloomingconcernthatisoftenthoughtaboutis“zoomfatigue”fromvirtualexperiences,in-personeventsgoingrougeandalackofengagementthatwillleadtomenandwomenleavingthefraternityandsororityexperience,whichwouldhaveseveralimpactsforourorganizations,programmingandstaffinfrastructure.ANTICIPATEDOPPORTUNITIESAsacommunitythereareavarietyofopportunitiestoenhancevariousareasofthefraternalexperienceonourcampus.EducationandProgramming:Wehaveopportunitiestogrowinareasthatrangefromenhancingoureducationonseveralareasofriskpreventiontoensurethatourcommunitycontinuestoprovideasafe,meaningfulexperienceforourstudents.Inadditiontothis,anotherlargeopportunityisinleadershipprogrammingandengagementinnotonlyastudent’sorganizationbutincampusinvolvementopportunitiesaswell.Wealsorecognizethatthereisworktobedonetoaddressthechallengeslistedabove.OrganizationGrowth:

WehaveauniqueopportunitytogrowthefraternityandsororitycommunityattheUniversityofUtah.TheInterfraternityCouncil(IFC)experiencedasuccessfulexpansionofAlphaTauOmegafraternityinFall2017andlooksforwardtoanotherexpansioninthenearfuturewithPhiKappaPsifraternity.Nationally,ourMulticulturalGreekCouncil(MGC)forfraternitiesandsororitiesthathaveaculturalbasesaregrowingatrapidrates.However,wearen’texperiencingthesamegrowthattheUniversityofUtah.WecancontinuetoexplorethegrowthoftheNationalPan-HellenicCouncil(NPHC)withlocalgraduatechapters.Thisnextyearallowsforustotrysomenewprogrammingeffortstoincreasethissub-community’sgrowth.RacialandSocialJusticeConversationsAswestartourRotationalProgrammingModelofEducation(developedin2019),wearestartingwithEquity,DiversityandInclusion(EDI).Thismodelhasbeenputinplaceforourcommunityforustohostprogrammingall-yearwiththeintentionoffocusingoncomplextopicsthroughoutanacademicyear.WearepartneringwiththeareaofStudentDiversityandInclusionwithinStudentAffairstoengageourstudentsinconversationsandbuildacurriculumaroundEDIforfraternityandsororitymemberstobereleasedinearly2021.ThisprogramwillnotonlybewovenintoourChapterAccreditationProgrambutweanticipatethatitwillcontinuetogrowandevolvethroughoutthefollowingyears.InJuly2020,theBlackStudentUnion(BSU)presentedaresolutiontotheAssociationofStudentoftheUniversityofUtah(ASUU)regardingissuesoftheBlackstudentexperienceoncampus.Therewerethreeissueswithintheresolutionregardingfraternitiesandsororities.ThroughaconversationthestaffandstudentleadersfromboththefraternityandsororitycommunityandBSUleadership,webelievethatweareinaplacewherewecanworktogethertoenhancetheeducationanddevelopmentofthecommunity’sculturalcompetencyandracialawareness.Werecognizethatthiseducationisanopportunityforthecommunitytobroadentheirknowledge,awarenessandunderstandingofEDI.Webelievethatthiswillimpactthelivesofourstudentsasindividuals,theirorganizationsandoursurroundingcommunities.Weknowthateducationonthistopiciswelcomedbymanyofourstudents.Ontheflipside,weknowthattherearesomethatwillberesistanttotheeducation.Webelievethatthepurposeofengagingintheseconversationsisvitaltoourstudentsexperiencesandtheirfuturesascitizensinourever-evolvingsociety.SaltLakeCityPoliceDepartment(SLCPD):ThereisanopportunitytostrengthentherelationshipwiththeSaltLakeCityPoliceDepartment(SLCPD).ThehousedchaptersalongUniversityStreet,100S.,andWolcottStreetarenotownedoroperatedbytheUniversityofUtah.ThesehomesareownedandoperatedbyprivateHouseCorporationsthatfunctionwithineachorganization.Withthat,thesepropertiesdonotfallundertheUniversityofUtahPoliceDepartment’sjurisdiction;instead,thesepropertiesfallundertheSLCPDjurisdiction.ACityOrdinanceforFraternalOrganizationswascreatedwiththeexpectationsofthehousedorganizationstoremainingoodstanding.ThisordinanceistobeupheldbytheSLCPD.Overthepastyear,therehavebeenconversationsthatfocusontheneedforbettercommunicationandcleanerexpectationsforthecommunityandhowitisbeingpolicedwithintheCityOrdinance.

Wewanttoexploreconductingaclimatesurveytounderstandwherethestudentsinvolvedinfraternityandsororitylifearecurrentlyatintheirunderstandingaswellashowtheyfeeltheenvironmentactuallyis.ThiscouldbeinconjunctionwiththeDivisionofEDI’supcomingclimatesurveyoronourown.Webelievethatitwillbeimportanttohavetheunderstandingandperspectiveofthefraternityandsororitymembers,aswellasthegeneralcommunitywillreallyhelpadvisehowwemoveforward.
