2019-20 GEORGETOWN MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTESGEORGETOWN COMMUNITY MOURNS THE PASSING OF MARY FENLON
The Georgetown University community mourns the passing of Mary A. Fenlon, a seminal figure in the history of the Georgetown University Athletics Department and most known for her role as the longtime men’s basketball academic coordinator.
• Fenlon was the first hire made by Hall of Famer John Thompson Jr., when he took over the men’s basketball program in 1972.
• She passed away on Sunday, December 15 in Henderson, Nevada. The 81-year-old lost her battle with cancer.
• To honor Ms. Fenlon, all men’s basketball uniforms have a patch that bear her initials “MAF”. • With just three assistant coaching positions permitted, Thompson hired two assistants
to focus on basketball and one to handle academics – and that one was Mary Fenlon.• Fenlon spent 27 years as the backbone of a program that saw overwhelming
success winning the 1984 NCAA Championship, appearing in three Final Fours, making 25 postseason appearances including 20 in the NCAA Tournament and capturing six BIG EAST Tournament titles.
• During her time on the Hilltop, student-athletes who stayed all four years maintained a 97 percent graduation rate
• Georgetown’s Ya Ya Dia was the program’s first BIG EAST Men’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year.
• “Back then I knew it was ridiculous for an institution of higher education not to have a person who would be responsible for coordinating academics in the face of the great demands and pressures generated by a Division I program. Since our expectations were to build a successful program, it made sense to build our academic foundation at the same time we were building our athletic foundation.”
- John Thompson Jr. • “She was like a parent. She was like a mother figure – even though we all had
mothers – but she was our mother figure here on campus. Because of her and the work ethic that she showed us, we were able to be successful after leaving here.”
- Head Coach Patrick Ewing
YURTSEVEN NAMED TO BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL• Georgetown center Omer Yurtseven was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
on Monday for the fifth time this season. • Yurtseven averaged a double-double with 21.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per game,
shooting 58.1 percent from the floor and tallying four blocks in a pair of games. • In an 83-80 won over then-No. 25/RV Creighton, Yurtseven led the squad with 20
points and 13 boards. • On Saturday against Marquette, the senior managed 22 points and a squad-best 11
rebounds afor his second double-double in as many games. • Yurtseven’s 10 double-doubles ranks second in the BIG EAST Conference.
COACHES VS. CANCER SUITS AND SNEAKERS WEEK• Coaches from both teams will be participating in Coaches vs. Cancer Suits And

2019-20 GEORGETOWN MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES
PATRICK EWINGHEAD COACH | THIRD SEASON GEORGETOWN C’85
On April 3, 2017 Georgetown University named Patrick Ewing (C’85) its new head men’s basketball coach. Ewing came back to Georgetown after serving for 15 years as an assistant coach in the NBA. He served as an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards (2002-03), Houston Rockets (2003-06) and Orlando Magic (2007-12) and as the associate head coach for the Charlotte Hornets (2013-17).
In just two seasons on the Hilltop, the Hoyas have already hit some early milestones. The 2018-19 season saw Georgetown win a major BIG EAST award in the league’s Freshman of the Year honor as well as a trio of athletes named to the All-Freshman Team, just the second time in conference history three honorees have come from the same institution. The 2018-19 campaign saw a return to the postseason for the first
time since the 2014-15 season as the Hoyas earned a berth to the 2019 National Invitation Tournament.
Ewing is recognized as the greatest men’s basketball player to ever don the Blue & Gray. He was selected as one of the top 50 players in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall
of Fame in 2008.
Ewing was a three-time consensus First Team All-American (1983, 1984, 1985) on the Hilltop, leading the Hoyas to three NCAA Championship Game appearances and the 1984 National Championship title. He was named Most Outstanding Player of the 1984 NCAA Championships. His play propelled Georgetown into one of the most respected basketball programs in the country.
During his illustrious career, Ewing had the opportunity to play for, and coach, alongside some of the great coaches in basketball, including Pat Riley (New York Knicks), Jeff Van Gundy (Knicks, Houston Rockets), Stan Van Gundy (Orlando Magic), Tom Thibodeau (Chicago Bulls, Minnesota Timberwolves) and Steve Clifford (Charlotte).
He was the first pick in the 1985 NBA Draft and went on to earn NBA Rookie of the Year honors in 1986 with the New York Knicks after averaging 20.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Ewing scored 24,815 points during his 17-year NBA career to go along with 11,607 rebounds. Ewing spent 15 years with the Knicks and made 10-consecutive NBA All-Star appearances. Ewing averaged 21.0 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.45 blocks in 1,183 career games and was a member of the NBA’s 50th Anniversary
Team. He remains the New York Knicks’ all-time leader in points, rebounds, blocked shots, steals and field goals made.
He still stands second all-time in scoring at Georgetown, averaging 15.3 points in 143 games. He is one of only four players in program history to score at least 2,000 points (2,184). Ewing is the all-time leader in total rebounds (1,316), blocked shots (493) and
games played (143).
