Fall term (WED EVE) Stone, Rachael
Course Description This course explores current and emerging boundaries and opportunities that an aging population presents within the realm of health and social services. In a seminar format, this course aims to foster critical thinking and challenge our definitions of what it means to age and to have freedom of choice. The effect of aging on Canadian health and social systems, and the policies needed to support healthy aging will be examined thoroughly. Special attention will be given to evaluation of programs that address social, physical and economic determinants of wellness for older adults in Canada, as well as knowledge mobilization strategies that foster inclusion, empowerment and innovation. Key issues of focus include: the health care system, stigma and ageism, elder abuse, the aging workforce, retirement and social supports, “aging in place”, community services, leisure and physical activity support, and formal and informal care. Through the weekly readings, academic assignments and discussions, you will have the opportunity to gain vital knowledge about the key issues in the field of Gerontology that can be applied to current and future academic, work and social settings.

HLTH 497/3.0 Special Topics in Health Studies Topic ID: Ecological Embodiment: The Politics of Food, Fitness, and the Environment
Fall Term King, S.
Description Is a high protein diet bad for the planet? What does it mean to hike on stolen land? Can I wear yoga pants and still be a friend to fish? This course will consider a variety of approaches to answering such questions. We will start from the premise that “the environment” is not located outside the body, but is instead part and parcel of it. Understanding what “ecological embodiment” means, and what it implies for thinking about health in the context of climate change, will form the focus of our work. Drawing on a broad range of interdisciplinary literature on food, fitness, and the environment, we will undertake case studies of topics ranging from mud running to the microbiome, and from protein power to the paleo diet. We will be guided, especially, by scholarship in Indigenous, critical race, feminist, multispecies and science studies as we learn to think relationally, rather than individually, about diet and exercise.

• The Arts & Science Calendar is the final authority on all course information. (An “equivalent” prerequisite would be a course with academic content similar to the prerequisite, e.g. a course taken at another university).
• The official Course Timetable (University Registrar) is scheduled to be posted on SOLUS on MON JUNE 17 and is subject to change up to the beginning of classes. It is the final authority on time and location of classes.
• If a course is not listed in the official Course Timetable on SOLUS it will not be offered. (Not every course in the Arts & Science Calendar is scheduled every year due to faculty sabbaticals and other professional commitments).
• This SKHS Draft Timetable does not include times and locations of classes but is intended for planning purposes.
• Students are advised to consult the SKHS Registration website for updates (see date in footer of this Draft Timetable to ensure you are working with the latest version). This document is subject to change.
• Warning: All courses have enrolment limits, be sure to select your courses at your assigned time. Print off the Registration Timelines and post it where you can see it!
• Each course clearly states which courses are available to students in specific degree plans and years during courses.
