2018 BULLDOG BASEBALL - 2 -
TALK ABOUT A FAST REBOUND: Redshirt sophomore Jordan Carr sat out last season due to Tommy John surgery. However, the left-handed pitcher has recovered quickly. He has started two games this year, and he has been stellar for the Bulldogs. The Pasadena, Md. native has totaled 10.1 innings and has struck out nine. In his first start of the year at Lipscomb, Carr twirled 5.1 innings en route to striking out six and only allowing one run. The start earned him the title of Big South Conference Starting Pitcher of the Week. Prior to this season, his last appearance was on May 19, 2016, when he started at Radford and tossed six innings, allowed three runs and struck out a trio of batters.
SCORING EARLY: UNC Asheville likes to score early. In fact, the Bulldogs have scored at least one run in six straight games in the first inning. Overall this year, UNC Asheville has out-scored its opposition 9-3 in the first frame. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs are only 2-4 when scoring first.
OFF TO A QUICK START OFFENSIVELY: Sophomore Joe Gruszka has posted at least one hit in all seven games this season. In those seven games, Gruszka has recorded three multi-hit games. Chris Troost paces the Bulldogs with four multi-hit games. Troost opened the season collecting a pair of hits in all three games at Lipscomb. Carmine Pagano and Gruszka are each riding a seven-game on-base streak.
SCOUTING THE SEMINOLES: Florida State enters the three-game series with an unblemished 8-0 record, including a 7-0 mark at home. Inside the confines of Dick Howser Stadium, the Seminoles have defeated Xavier, USF and Troy this year.
The Seminole offense is hitting .264. Leading the offensive surge is senior outfielder Steven Wells with a .429 clip. J.C. Flowers and Drew Mendoza are right behind their teammate, as all three are hitting .310 or higher. In the eight contests this year, Wells and Flowers have combined for seven doubles and 11 RBIs. Mike Salvatore and Rafael Bournigal pace FSU with a pair of steals each.
On the mound, Florida State will send out three quality starting pitchers this weekend. Of the trio, they have combined for four wins in five starts. The trio has also combined for 39 strikeouts and only six walks in 32.1 innings of work.
Out of the bullpen, Jonah Scolaro has made the most appearances with four. The freshman left-handed pitcher has twirled six innings, where he has not allowed a run and struck out seven. Redshirt junior Cobi Johnson has made four appearances out of the bullpen this season, where he has struck out 10 batters in four innings of work.
BEST REGULAR SEASON FINISH IN SOME TIME: With their 11 wins in 2017, the Bulldogs have posted the most conference wins since winning 12 Big South Conference contests in 2012 en route to finishing sixth in the league standings. Coincidentally, 2012 was also the last time UNC Asheville earned a berth into the Big South Conference Championships.
20-WIN SEASON: Under the Scott Friedholm era, the Bulldogs have posted two seasons of at least 20 wins. Last year the Bulldogs went 25-32, which was the most victories since the 2012 season when UNC Asheville went 25-30. The previous 20-plus win season under Coach Friedholm was in his first season (2015), when the Bulldogs went 21-34.
BULLDOGS WINNING 20+ GAMES: In the NCAA Division I era, only head coaches Bill Hillier, Matt Myers and Willie Stewart recorded more 20-win seasons with the Bulldogs, as all three had three 20-win campaigns. Hillier’s 1997, 1998 and 1999 teams finished with 20, 27 and 21 wins, respectively. Myers’ 2002, 2003 and 2004 squads recorded 21, 27 and 26 wins. Stewart’s 2006 Big South Conference Tournament Champions, 2007 and 2008 teams recorded 28, 22 and 24 wins. Current skipper Scott Friedholm is the only other Bulldog head coach to have multiple 20-win campaigns. The 23 wins is the ninth-most wins in program history for a single season. The 2006 team set the standard with 28 wins while the 1990 squad went 25-25.
THE BULLDOGS AT HOME: For the first time since the 2012 season, UNC Asheville baseball boasted a winning record at home in 2017. Last year, the Bulldogs went 12-11 at home, and in 2012, UNC Ashe-ville went 13-12 in home games.

2018 BULLDOG BASEBALL - 3 -
TURNING DOUBLE PLAYS: The Bulldogs turned 47 double plays last year, giving UNC Asheville 13 more than last season. The 2015 Bulldogs turned 57 double plays while the 2014 ‘Dogs rolled up 35. The Bulldogs finished third in the Big South Conference for double plays behind Campbell and Liberty.
SAVING THE DAY: Eric Whitecavage finished the 2017 season with three saves, which gives him six in his career. In 2017, he also broke into the top-5 in program history for appearances (27) in a single season.
WALKING UP THE RANKS: Danny Wilson finished last season with 41 walks, which ranks tied for 4th in program history in a single season. Current Volunteer Coach Pete Guys holds the programs record for the most walks in a single season with 53 in 2016.
TAKE A LITTLE OFF THE TOP: Win the game, lose the hair. That was the recipe for success on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, as the UNC Asheville baseball team worked to raise donations for a special cause in an attempt to capture a bigger victory than the 5-3 win over Western Carolina at McCormick Field. The Bulldogs held their annual Vs. Cancer Game at the historic baseball venue located in downtown Asheville. It was the fifth year of the event and it was possibly the biggest one yet. Over the previous four years, UNC Asheville baseball has raised close to $24,000. As of the most recent count, the Bulldogs had collected over $9,200 in 2017 alone, with hopes to add to that total throughout the rest of the season. The over $9,200 raised has UNC Asheville currently fifth in the nation amongst baseball programs that are raising money for the worthy cause of battling childhood cancer. The money raised will be donated to the Vs. Cancer Foundation, a non-profit orga-nization based in Raleigh. The foundation, which operates on a 50/50 model of giving, raises funds for childhood can-cer research as well as helps children live more comfortably during treatments at local children’s hospitals. Vs. Cancer gives half of the proceeds raised to pediatric brain tumor research and the other half goes back to a local hospital in the community where the money was raised. For UNC Asheville, that is Mission Children’s Hospital.
FORMER BULLDOG DULL IN THE PROS: 2012 gradu-ate and former Bulldog great Ryan Dull begins his second full season in Major League Baseball with the Oakland Athletics. Dull made his debut on September 1, 2015, pitching 1 complete inning against the Angels where he gave up just one hit and struck out one batter. He ended 2015 with a 1-2 record and one save in 13 appearances, pitching 17.0 innings. He struck out 16 batters compared to giving up just 12 hits, eight earned runs and six walks. In 2016, his first full season in the majors, Dull saw action in 70 games, pitching 74.1 innings while posting a 2.42 ERA and a 5-5 record to go along with three saves. He struck out 73 batters while giving up just 50 hits, 20 earned runs and 15 walks. Last season, Dull set a major league record by stranding 36 straight inherited runners without giving up a run. It was the longest streak at any point of a season dating back to at least 1961 and was the longest streak of 36 stranded inherited runners by any major league reliever to start a season in the expansion era. At one point during his streak, opponents were batting just 0.75 with men on base and he allowed just one hit in 47 at-bats with a runner in scoring position.
