THE PEARL FISHERSLes pêcheurs de perlesGEORGES BIZET
Long before Bizet took the opera world by storm with Carmen, the 25-year-old composer wrote another beautiful score that has stood the test of time – The Pearl Fishers. This story of love, jealousy and temptation features one of the most popular of all operatic highlights – the haunting tenor/baritone duet In the depths of the temple.
In colonial Ceylon two life long friends, Nadir and Zurga, swear never to let the love of a woman threaten their bond. However, when a mysterious young priestess, Leïla comes to bless the pearl fishers, Nadir recognises her as his long-lost love, whom Zurga also loves. Nadir must choose between the oath made to his friend, or the love of his life.
This spectacular new production is directed by Michael Gow, with sets and costumes designed by Robert Kemp. The performances feature an impressive lineup of Australian opera talents, including Desiree Frahn as Leïla, James Egglestone as Nadir, Grant Doyle as Zurga and Pelham Andrews as Nourabad.

THE MERRY WIDOW FRANZ LEHÁR
Lehár’s masterpiece comes to life in a spectacular new production starring Greta Bradman in the title role, opposite one of the nation’s foremost music theatre talents, Alexander Lewis, as Danilo.
The impoverished European principality of Pontevedro is facing bankruptcy, and the nation is in crisis. Its Ambassador in Paris, Baron Zeta, faces the task of ensuring that the beautiful and wealthy young widow Hanna Glavari marries a fellow Pontevedrian. But who? The most likely candidate, the charming Count Danilo, seems far more interested in champagne and the chorus ladies of Maxim’s than doing his duty to the fatherland. And to complicate matters further, it appears that Baron Zeta’s beautiful young wife Valencienne might be far too fond of her ardent young French admirer, Camille de Rosillon.
This jewel of Viennese operetta is loved for its beautiful, romantic music, including the great soprano highlight Vilia, Danilo’s bravura showcase I’m Off to Chez Maxim’s and the beguiling Merry Widow Waltz.
Eminent director and choreographer Graeme Murphy weaves his magic in this sumptuous production, designed by Michael Scott-Mitchell (sets) and Jennifer Irwin (costumes). The Merry Widow is not to be missed.

WAGNER GALA CONCERT
THE MASTERSINGERS OF NUREMBERG, ACT IIIDie Meistersinger von Nürnberg Act lllRICHARD WAGNER
In 2018 it will be twenty years since State Opera of South Australia mounted the first Australian production of Wagner’s monumental Ring Cycle.
To celebrate this milestone, we present Australian and international Wagner specialist singers in the third act of the much-loved The Mastersingers of Nuremberg in a gala performance in the Festival Theatre. The magnificent Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and acclaimed State Opera Chorus will be under the baton of eminent maestro Nicholas Braithwaite.
The third and final act of Mastersingers is a compositional triumph and a chance for great voices to shine, as the ardent young Walther, guided by the wise cobbler Hans Sachs, competes in the Mastersingers song contest for the hand of the beautiful Eva. Not even the opposition of his vengeful rival Beckmesser can stand in the way of his ultimate triumph.
The concert will mark the welcome return to our roster of Kate Ladner as Eva, together with international star tenor Bradley Daley as Walther, leading Australian bass baritone Shane Lowrencev as Hans Sachs and acclaimed British Wagner specialist Andrew Shore as Beckmesser.
