Following the success of our inaugural Research Report last year, the 2018 compendium showcasing our research achievements across Logan & Beaudesert Hospitals is now available. Notably, research activities have expanded both in volume and reach. Throughout these pages you will discover considerable evidence of research outcomes, grant successes and demonstrable collaboration between our hospital clinicians, industry and partnering academic organisations.

Congratulations to all researchers on their accomplishments during 2018. Metro South Health Centres for Health Research continues to provide operational support and we are grateful for their ongoing support. This Report is truly a testament to our development as we become a mature research centre of excellence.

Education key in cardiac

monitoring

Ward 3B will be implement four cardiac monitors later this year to assist with monitoring respiratory patients who may be in Atrial Fibrillation or have right heart strain from pulmonary embolisms.

Nurse Educator Emily Smith said the 3B nursing team had taken part in a robust education program to ensure they had the fundamental entry level cardiac knowledge prior to ward go live in June.

“The education has included simulations, workbooks and on-site cardiac workshops and most recently Anne Evans Murray, a renowned RN educator, has provided three Basic Cardiac Rhythm Interpretation workshops.”

Emily said the workshops, held at three sites across Metro South, were attended by 330 nurses and midwives from across the health service.

“This workshop was also financially supported by the Division of Medicine at Logan Hospital and provided an exciting opportunity for our nurses and midwives to be not only supported through roster modifications to attend, but also to have their attendance financially supported by the organisation.”

“Anne has the ability to teach the most comprehensive methods in a refreshing way that can make the most junior to the most experienced clinician understand clearly,” she said.

John a valuable voice in recruitment process

A Logan Hospital consumer has played a vital role in the recruitment of Speech Pathology’s latest senior staff member in a first for the facility.

Director Speech Pathology Marnie Seabrook said John Barnett and his wife had been heavily involved in various areas of the hospital as patients and carers.

She said a consumer perspective was a vital part of every day service delivery to patients, especially in the rehabilitation unit where this role would be located.

“It’s a great opportunity for our candidates to hear questions from a ‘real life’ patient about what is important to them.”

John said he had learnt a lot through the process and was grateful for the chance to play a part.

Jan Phillips, Executive Director and Jo Capewell, Director Clinical Excellence Queensland (CEQ) visited the Logan Hospital Future Hospital Program (FHP) Team on 8 March, accompanied by Sean Birgan, A/Director Nursing Midwifery Services Logan Bayside Health Network.

Following a presentation by the FHP executive, Jan and Jo were treated to a tour of some of the achievements realised through the program. “The commitment of the Program team, staff and clinicians to engage and support the delivery of quality improvement initiatives is exciting.”

“It is clear that the Logan Hospital Future Hospital program is enabling staff, at all levels, to work together to identify new and innovative ways of delivering patient care. These initiatives are clearly supporting the program’s ambition to become recognised for innovation and excellence in the delivery of person-centred care, education and research, but more importantly for delivering safer and kinder care” said Jo Capewell.

“It was my pleasure to accompany Clinical Excellence Queensland team Jan Phillips and Jo Capewell on a tour of our Excellence in Bedside Care pilot wards at Logan Hospital. Jan and Jo were extremely impressed with the improvements that Renal Dialysis and Ward 3A had accomplished as part of the Excellence In Bedside Care (EiBC) program. As the project sponsor and a relatively new member to the Logan Nursing Midwifery team I can say that the enthusiasm of the clinical staff in these areas to showcase their work was electric. Michelle Reardon Principal Improvement Officer in FHP continues to demonstrate enthusiasm as she leads the roll-out of this program. EiBC is a great example of how direct care nurses at Logan Hospital have input into changes that directly affect the delivery of care and work flows in line with our Pathway to Excellence designation”, said Sean Birgan.

Don’t forget to DONATE!

Collection stations are located in the Staff Dining Room and the Emergency

Department My name is TC. My wife P had our beautiful baby boy at Logan Hospital.I just wanted to quickly touch base to say a huge thank you to every single person involved who helped make our experience so magical and memorable.

Firstly I want to acknowledge the midwife who spent the majority of time with us. Midwife Jackie was amazing and our experience could have been a whole lot different should Jackie not been there.

Nothing was to hard and no question was too silly with Jackie. She had this calming sense about her and I know it helped P so much through her labour.

Jackie started her shift at 10:30pm and was never too far away till her shift finished around 7am the next morning. Our baby boy didn’t arrive until shortly after 11am so Jackie unfortunately didn’t get to deliver him. Although to the lovely surprise of P, Jackie visited her the next morning after her shift to say hi and

see how mum and bub were doing. These little things are so amazing and were definitely noticed.

To the rest of the team that helped P throughout her stay, I want to acknowledge with a huge level of thanks and respect for you all. It can be a thankless job and the doctors and midwives are quickly forgotten about once baby arrives, however I just want it known that we are extremely thankful to you all.

Logan hospital was faultless from our first appointment many months ago, all the way through to our first home visit from a midwife yesterday. The service and professionalism has been unforgettable and we highly recommended Logan Hospital to others.

Our experience was made so much more special thanks to everyone who helped us along our journey. P and L are now home and resting well and our little family is filled with so much love.

Thank you all. TC
