Welcome to Australia’s national university.

I am proud to be leading a university that over the past seven decades has grown to be one of the finest universities in the world.

ANU offers a research and learning environment second to none. I encourage all post-graduate students making the extremely important decision of where to commit themselves for their postgraduate study, to consider ANU.

Sitting in a beautiful park-like setting in the heart of Australia’s capital, we are the national university, and we represent Australia as a whole. We welcome students from all over the country and the world. We are one of the world’s most diverse and international universities.

We attract and reward the best teachers and researchers, so that the experience at ANU will be one of innovative learning, passion and inspiration. For those who choose ANU, you will have the opportunity to work with some of the world’s top researchers.

We have an added charter – to use our expertise to inform public policy. Through social change and economic transitions, our role is, and has always been, to provide academic rigour and expertise to help politicians and policymakers guide their decisions.

Because of this, ANU students receive an exemplary education in an exciting and relevant environment that produces graduates who are among the most employable in the world.

Students can also benefit from the strong relationships the University has with government, business and other national and international institutions.

An ANU education will give you the basis to play your part in shaping the future of Australia and the world. I look forward to welcoming you to ANU in 2018.

Professor Brian P. Schmidt AC Vice-Chancellor and President

Postgraduate coursework Postgraduate coursework will deepen your knowledge, expand your skills and equip you for a successful career in your field.

Our postgraduate coursework programs include Master degrees, along with a range of graduate-level Certificates and Diplomas. Some coursework programs also involve a research component, where students work with the assistance of a supervisor.

Admission into a postgraduate coursework program requires the completion of a Bachelor degree as a minimum.

Graduate Certificate: six months’ full-time study, or approximately 24 units

Graduate Diploma: one year full-time study, or approximately 36–48 units

Master degree: two years’ full-time study, or approximately 72 units

Master degree (Advanced): two years’ full-time study, or approximately 72 units. Includes a 24-unit equivalent supervised sub-thesis.

“I love teaching. I have so much fun seeing the look of understanding on students faces when you can see a concept just clicks. I believe a good teacher pushes students outside of their comfort zone but provides a safe landing for failure, and a learning pathway forward.”

Postgraduate research Postgraduate research, or a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program, is a research-focused degree usually undertaken by someone who has completed a previous degree with a significant research component.

You can undertake an HDR program at ANU through a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and other professional doctorates.

To be considered eligible for admission to an HDR program at ANU you must:

> Hold, or be about to complete, an Australian Bachelor degree with at least Second Class Honours – Upper (First Class Honours is often required) or its international equivalent; or a Postgraduate degree with a significant research thesis component.

> You must have already identified a supervisor at ANU, willing and available to supervise your research.

> All applicants must meet the University’s English Language Admission Requirements for students.

You can apply online throughout the year. If you are applying for a research scholarship, be aware of scholarship application deadlines. You must indicate on your application form if you still wish to be considered for admission if your scholarship application is unsuccessful.

Because Canberra is a university town, the highest turnover of rental properties is during the December/January summer break.

Renting Advice:anu.edu.au/study/accommodation/advice-procedures/renting

Applying for a leaseIn Canberra, real estate agents and property owners often insist that prospective tenants see the property before applying for a lease, to be seriously considered.

To apply, you will need to fill out an application form which will ask you about your personal circumstances, including your financial situation. You will also be asked for referees, people who can verify that you are trustworthy, like a previous landlord or employer.

If you are applying from overseas, it’s a good idea to attach written references to your application. Given the time differences between Australia and the rest of the world, this will make the process easier for you and the person assessing your application.

The agent should let you know within a week if your application has been successful.

Setting up your homeYour lease will usually be for a period of six to 12 months. You will be responsible for organising the utilities connections. Water will be connected by the owner but you will need to pay for the water you use.

Factor in these costs when setting up your new home:

> Bond is usually four weeks’ rent and is held by the ACT Office of Regulatory Services. Provided you don’t cause damage to the property and maintain it, the bond will be returned to you in full at the end of the lease

> As well as bond, you will probably need to pay four weeks’ rent in advance

> Connection fees for the telephone, electricity, gas and any other utilities you choose to connect at the property

> It’s a good idea to take out household contents insurance > Moving expenses > Canberra has a broad range of recycled, second-hand and

brand new furniture and household suppliers.

If you have a dispute with the landlord or real estate agent, Accommodation Services and the Tenants Union ACT can give you advice and advocate on your behalf.

On-campusANU gives you more opportunities to live on campus than any other Australian university, so you can make the most of your time here. Apply to join nearly 5,000 students from across Australia and around the world who call ANU home.

Postgraduate students can apply for on-campus accommodation in these residences:

Self-catered

> Burgmann College Postgraduate Village > Davey Lodge > Fenner Hall > Graduate House > Kinloch Lodge > Lena Karmel Lodge > Toad Hall > Warrumbul Lodge > Bruce Hall Packard Wing > Ursula Hall Laurus Wing

We cannot guarantee that on-campus accommodation will be available. Also, student residences are not suitable for children, so you may need to explore renting off-campus (non-ANU).

We recommend arriving in Canberra early to find non-ANU accommodation.

Share a house or apartmentShared accommodation can be hard to find if you’re not in Canberra.

Shared households in Australia take different forms; some share meals and rotate household chores, while others have multiple people living in the same house but keeping separate lives.

A good place to start looking for shared accommodation is ANU Housing Online.

W housingonline.anu.edu.au

W anu.edu.au/study/accommodation/advice-procedures/group-housing

Rent privatelyYou can rent an apartment or house privately through a real estate agent or direct from the property owner.

The best place to start your search is online. We suggest these sites:

Live on campus or take a short commute from one of Canberra’s well-connected neighbourhoods.

Domestic studentsMost domestic postgraduate coursework and non-award students at ANU must pay domestic tuition fees. The amount you have to pay is based on the courses in which you enrol. Each course has a set fee, so you will be invoiced for the total fees for all the courses you enrol in for a semester or session.

You can defer part or all of your tuition fees using FEE-HELP if you meet these citizenship and residency requirements:*

> You are an Australian citizen or permanent humanitarian visa holder (living in Australia for the duration of your enrolment).

> You are a permanent visa holder undertaking bridging study for overseas-trained professionals, and will be living in Australia for the duration of your enrolment.

If you use FEE-HELP, the Australian Government will pay your tuition fees while you study, but you will be required to pay back those fees through the taxation system or voluntary payments.

A small number of postgraduate programs offer Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP)* where the Australian Government subsidises your tuition fees. For information about CSPs see anu.edu.au/students/scholarships/graduate-commonwealth-supported-places

Refund policy for international students

If you are an international student and have enrolled at ANU for the first time and you are in your first semester or session, your tuition fees may be refunded in full if you discontinue your studies before the relevant census date.

Health insurance

All non-Australian citizens living in Australia must have health insurance. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is private health insurance that will cover the costs of your medical and hospital care if you need it. We recommend Allianz Global Assistance but you can choose another provider that offers this cover.

Higher Degree by Research International Students - School Fee Waiver

From 1 January 2016 the children of HDR international students studying in Canberra are eligible to have their fees waived in ACT Government schools. This eases the financial burden on HDR students’ families and helps cement Canberra’s position as Australia’s education and research capital.

An eligible HDR international student will need to hold a Postgraduate Research Sector visa (Subclass 500) issued by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and be enrolled in a Masters degree by research or a Doctoral degree.

Cost of livingIn addition to tuition fees, there are other costs you may want to consider before starting your postgraduate degree at ANU, particularly if you’re moving to Canberra from interstate or overseas.

Getting aroundA planned and relatively young city, Canberra is easy and economical to get around.

Our suburbs are arranged around several shopping and commercial hubs. There’s a safe and reliable public bus service and a comprehensive network of bicycle paths. Many buses are equipped with bike racks, so cyclists can hop on the bus for longer journeys.

The road system is excellent and traffic jams are rare. For interstate and overseas travel, Canberra Airport is only about a 15-minute drive from the CBD.

Exploring the regionCanberra is in the Australian Capital Territory. Beyond Canberra, the Namadgi National Park includes many walking trails and lookouts and includes the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve where you can see Australian native animals like brolgas, emus and rock wallabies in their native habitats.

South of Canberra is the stunning Kosciuszko National Park, home to Australia’s highest peak. Camp and bushwalk in the high country during the warmer months and ski in the winter.

The unspoiled New South Wales South Coast is a two-hour scenic drive east. With white beaches and turquoise waters, country villages and wineries to explore.

Best in the countryYou will find some of Australia’s best museums and galleries in Canberra including the National Gallery of Australia, National Portrait Gallery, the National Museum of Australia and the Australian War Memorial.

Home to the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra has excellent facilities for those who love to live an active lifestyle.

The region is etched with bike paths and walking trails and there are plenty of places to swim, kayak and windsurf. Mount Stromlo Park is great for mountain bike riding, horse riding and running activities.
