STAFF UPDATES• The Terrapins welcome two new assistant staff members in 2018. Kati Nearhouse comes on board as the team’s Director of Operations and former Terrapin Kasey Tapman joins as the team’s volunteer assistant coach.• Nearhouse comes to Maryland after spending the 2017 season as an assistant coach at Bryant. Prior to her time at Bryant, Nearhouse worked for two seasons at her alma mater, Syracuse, as the Director of Operations for field hockey. She played her first three seasons at Old Dominion before transferring to Syracuse to finish her career. As a player, Nearhouse was
named an NFHCA Division I Second Team All-American after a standout sophomore campaign in 2011. That season, she started 25 games and tallied 21 points off eight goals and five assists, leading the Lady Monarchs to the Final Four.• Tapman was a part of five Maryland field hockey teams, including a redshirt season. She played in 77 career games. She helped the Terps to the 2011 NCAA title and three total NCAA Final Fours. In her time in College Park, Maryland won four conference titles. She is currently on the U.S. National Team’s Developmental Squad.

HOME SWEET HOMESince its opening in 2003, the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex has provided the Maryland hockey program a huge home field advantage. • The Terps are 171-20 (.895) all-time at the Complex.• Maryland won 38 straight games at the Complex from Oct.11, 2008 through Oct. 14, 2011. The streak ended with a 5-2 loss to then-No. 1 Old Dominion. • The Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex has played home to 26 of Maryland’s NCAA Tournament games, and played host to three Final Fours (2007, 2010, 2014). U.S. Olympic teams. Most recently, Katie O’Donnell Bam and Jill Witmer competed with Team USA in the Rio Olympics this past summer. Bam and Keli Smith Puzo both represented Team USA in London in 2012. Four former Terrapins played in the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Lauren Powley, Dina Rizzo and Smith Puzo were on the 16-spot roster and Sara Silvetti served as an alternate• Kate Kauffman Beach was the Terps’ first Olympian in Atlanta Games in 1996• Terrapin athletes have played on their respective national teams from nine countries around the world: England, Ireland, Chile, Holland, Germany, Australia, Zimbabwe, Scotland and South Africa• Served on the U.S. National Team coaching staff from 1993-1997. Welsh, Infante, Rowe, O’Donnell & Frazer Win Honda AwardIn 2001, defensive back Autumn Welsh became the first athlete under Missy Meharg to be recognized as the national player of the year. Welsh was named the recipient of the prestigious Honda Award, marking the first time in Maryland field hockey history that a Terp attained the honor. After leading the Terps to back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2005 and 2006, defensive midfielder Paula Infante earned the honor both years, becoming only the third field hockey player in the history of the award to win it multiple times. Infante went on to be a top-five finalist for the coveted Honda-Broderick Cup, presented to the NCAA’s Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year across all sports. In 2008, Susie Rowe capped a senior campaign in which she won her third national title with the national player of the year award after setting Maryland records with 28 goals and 74 total points scored. The defender scored the game-winner in the National Championship game, a 4-2 victory over Wake Forest. As a junior, Katie O’Donnell won the nation’s top award after breaking the ACC assist records and leading the team offensively. Megan Frazer, team co-captain, won in 2011 after leading the Terrapins from an unseeded NCAA Tournament berth to another national title. Infante (2005, 06), Welsh (2001), Rowe (2008), O’Donnell (2009), Frazer (2011) and women’s lacrosse standout Jen Adams (2000, 2001) are the only Honda Award recipients in Maryland athletics history.

Head coach Missy Meharg and the Maryland field hockey announced the hiring of Terrapin great Katie [O’Donnell] Bam to the staff in January 2017 The two-time Olympian and four-time NFHCA All-American will serve as an assistant coach. In her first year back in College Park, Bam helped lead the Terrapins to a remarkable run to the NCAA Championship game. After starting the year 6-5, the Terps won seven straight games, including four straight over top 25 teams, and 10 of 11 games to be one of the last two teams standing. They won at No. 2 Duke, to go to the Final Four, then beat No. 3 Michigan, 5-1 in the Semifinals, before falling to No. 1 Connecticut. The Maryland coaching staff was named NFHCA Mid Atlantic Region Staff of the Year. Bam played for the Terrapins from 2007 through 2010, leading them to the 2008 and 2010 NCAA championships, as well as three ACC titles. A four-time NFHCA All-American, Bam was named ACC Player of the Year all four years of her career, and won the Honda Sports Award as the nation’s top player twice. Bam holds Maryland career records of 99 goals, 306 points and 108 assists. Her 32 goals, 34 assists for 98 points in her senior season are program records as well. In 2010, she was named Sportswoman of the Year by the Woman’s Sports Foundation, an award previously won by Mia Hamm and Venus and Serena Williams. She was the youngest player ever named to the U.S. Senior National Team at the age of 16 and earned over 200 caps in her career. Bam competed in the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, helping Team USA to a fifth-place finish in Rio. She also helped Team USA to a fourth-place finish in the World Cup in 2014. She helped lead Team USA to gold in the 2011 and 2015 Pan American Games, the 2014 Champions Challenge in Scotland and the 2013 World League Round 2 Tournament in Brazil. Bam started her coaching career at Maryland in 2012 as a student assistant coach. She helped the Terrapins to a record of 18-6 and the NCAA Final Four. As an assistant coach at Harvard, the helped lead the Crimson to the 2017 Ivy League title. Bam earned her bachelor’s degree in family science in 2013. Her husband, Marvin, is an assistant coach at Maryland.

In 2017, he served as an assistant at Harvard and helped the Crimson to its first Ivy League title since 2004. He served as an assistant coach at Millersville in 2015 and 2016, guiding the Marauders to a 38-6 record during that span, as well as two NCAA quarterfinal appearances and an NCAA Division II national championship in 2014. Millersville players were honored with nine All-America honors in that span. Prior to his stint at Millersville, Bam served as an assistant coach and technical director at Maryland 2012-13. On an international level, he has been an assistant coach for the USA Field Hockey Junior National U19 team since July. Before that, he was the head coach at Cheltenham Ladies College in England for four years. On a club level, Bam is the master coach and co-founder of K16 Field Hockey. He is a certified Level 2 coach in the United States and United Kingdom. As a player, Bam earned 98 international caps, competing in over 30 international tournaments. A native of South Africa, Bam represented his home country in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, as well as at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, the African Cup Championship and the Commonwealth Games. He has also played on various club teams in South Africa and in the United Kingdom. Marvin’s wife, Katie, is an assistant coach at Maryland.

Head coach Missy Meharg welcomed Kati Nearhouse to College Park as the director fo field hockey operations in the spring of 2018.
Nearhouse comes to Maryland after spending the 2017 season as an assistant coach at Bryant. Prior to her time at Bryant, Nearhouse worked for two seasons at her alma mater, Syracuse, as the Director of Operations for field hockey. She played her first three seasons at Old Dominion before transferring to Syracuse to finish her career.
Nearhouse was the Director of Operations for the Orange during their national championship run in 2015. In that role, Nearhouse managed the traveling duties for the team, assisted in recruiting and assisted with the day-to-day managing of the program.
Nearhouse has also gained experience coaching in field hockey camps throughout the east coast, spending time at All-American Field Hockey Camps and working with the USA Field Hockey Futures for two years. She also helped run Old Dominion Summer Camps during her time in Norfolk, and recently helped coach field hockey at Bishops Boys School in South Africa.
As a player, Nearhouse was named an NFHCA Division I Second Team All-American after a standout sophomore campaign in 2011. That season, she started 25 games and tallied 21 points off eight goals and five assists, leading the Lady Monarchs to the Final Four.
As a senior at Syracuse, Nearhouse led the Orange to a spot in the 2014 NCAA Championship game, the school’s first ever appearance in the title match. For her stellar play in the postseason, Nearhouse was named to both the ACC All-Tournament team and NCAA All-Tournament team.

Head coach Missy Meharg welcomed Terrapin field hockey alumna Kasey Tapman back to College Park as the team’s volunteer assistant coach in the summer of 2018.
Tapman was a part of five Maryland field hockey teams, including a redshirt season. She played in 77 career games. She helped the Terps to the 2011 NCAA title and three total NCAA Final Fours. In her time in College Park, Maryland won four conference titles.
“I am so excited to be back at Maryland and on the staff,” Tapman. “My time as a Terp were some of the best years of my life. Once a Terp, always a Terp!”
“Kasey exemplifies the purest definition of Maryland field hockey,” Meharg said. “Being entitled to nothing and grateful for everything took her from Pocomoke, Md. as a three-sport athlete, to being an NCAA Champion and a member of the USA developmental squad. Her hard work and relentless passion is an inspiration.”
Tapman, a native of Pocomoke, Md., was on the USA Developmental Team the last two years. She competed in the USA’s tour of Chile with the USA Developmental Team this past May.
She also served as the head coach of Freedom Hockey’s Under-14 team and was an assistant coach for the Under-19 Team, in addition to helping with administration and media.
Tapman graduated with her degree in kinesiology in the winter of 2015.
