Conversations with Pastor Kathleen
I am so excited to celebrate my installation with you - but this is not my day, it is yours. It is a recognition of the hard work you all have done during my Interim time, and the hope and vision you have for the future.
As we move ahead, we are going to try a lot of different things. Some will work (over 25% of the congregation signed up to participate in our first year of Lenten prayer partners - what a great start!). Some will not, and that’s OK. We’ll learn from both. It’s only failure if we stop trying. We’re going to need to be creative (check out the new idea on page 5), and always - ALWAYS - stay focused on our mission. Session is studying a new book this year called Real Good Church, written by the pastor of a church who went through a revitalization process, and it holds a lot of good ideas that we can adapt. But you have more. Keep praying, keep dreaming, and keep listening for the prompting of the Spirit. When an idea speaks to you - something you want to try, we’ll test it against our mission. If it fits, you’ll hear me say some of my favorite words - “How can I help you make this happen?!?!”
On a ‘housekeeping’ note: I intend to keep my posted office hours the same. As much as emergencies and meetings permit, I’ll be in the office Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. I’ll be in more than that, but those are your best times to catch me (other than my new ‘community hours’ - see pg. 3) Fridays I’ll almost always be out of the office for pastoral visitation and sermon preparation. I’ll keep Monday as my day off. I guard that pretty carefully and won’t do ‘normal’ work - but absolutely call if there is an emergency! That is never an interruption or bother!!

Kathleen’s Coffeehouse
Chats
New weekly off-site coffee shop office hours! Sometimes people are more comfortable talking with a pastor outside of the walls of a church. This is your time to drop by or to bring a friend to visit. You don't have to have a particular need to stop by, but it is fine if you do. Join me for conversation on anything from personal matters to church concerns to world peace – or anything else. This month, you can find Pastor Kathleen at Panera at Jefferson Pointe on Tuesdays from 11am to 1pm. We’ll switch up sites and times every other month or so, to move around the city and fit different schedules. Suggest your favorite place!
Movie Night
A W T
Sunday, March 18
Time TBD
Madeleine L'Engle’s classic story explores powerful Christian themes: light and darkness, the power of love
to overcome evil, and the willingness to risk non-conformity to do what is right. And - it’s a great story!
It’s coming out as a major movie this spring. Let’s get a group to go see it on a Sunday afternoon, and then catch
some dinner together.
We’ll finalize plans once we know show times (hopefully at Jefferson Pointe). There will be a sign up sheet on the
table in the Narthex.
Easter Flowers
Easter Sunday is April 1! If you would like to contribute to the purchase of spring flowers in the sanctuary on Easter morning, please use a Pew Envelope. Each plant is $9. We will be using Easter lilies, daffodils, hyacinths and tulips. Unfortunately, due to confusion regarding the time of placing the order, you cannot specify which type of flower you want but will be able to select one to take home with you following worship on Easter. Thank you!

Homebound Communion
Our next time to deliver communion to our home and residence bound members will be on Sunday, May 6.
Training will be offered before worship on Sunday, April 22 for those who have not helped with this ministry before. If you have EVER been ordained as a Presbyterian Elder or Deacon, you can help! We plan to visit as many of our Home/Nursing home bound members as we can, to bring them the Sacrament of Communion, so we need a lot of help. Please mark your calendars NOW and become a part of this very special outreach ministry!
Lenten Prayer Station,
set up here for Ash
Wednesday’s service.
After months of planning, we’ve almost completed the pew shortening project. Our great team (Dave Kelley, Kip Lytle, Ken Smith, Brian White, Jerry Huffman, and John Meier) were able to do the work themselves, rather than contracting it out. After a long Saturday, we now have a more flexible, accessible space - especially for those in wheelchairs or using walkers. We’re just waiting for the cushions to be finished and this project will be done. During Lent, we’re also able to use the more open space to include a prayer station. Each week we add a symbol to reflect that week’s theme - one of Jesus’ “I Am” statements.
Fishes and Loaves Collection
During the Lenten season, we will participate in Associated Churches Fishes and Loaves food collection. As you do your grocery shopping, please remember to purchase cans of fish and boxes of crackers. Boxes of Tuna Helper also help make the canned tuna stretch into a larger meal. A table will be in the Narthex for your food donations. All of our gifts go downstairs to our Food Pantry. Thank you for helping to keep our food shelves full!
Page 5 Mission
Help us reach our neighbors!
A new front sign will cost us about $10,000. We need to raise $9000. Once we do,
Pastor Kathleen has pledged to contribute the final $1000 (10%).
So far, we’ve received $2170!
Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far. Every gift makes a difference!
Let’s keep going. How can you help?
One Great Hour of Sharing
As we journey through Lent, we will hear stories of how our gifts to the One Great Hour of Sharing are used. Around the world, millions of people lack access to sustainable food sources, clean water, sanitation, education and opportunity. The programs supported by One Great Hour of Sharing-Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program and Self-Development of People-all work to serve individuals and communities in need. The Presbyterian Disaster Assistance program works alongside communities as they recover after natural or human-caused disasters, and provides support for refugees. The Presbyterian Hunger Program takes action to alleviate hunger, to care for creation, and to reduce the systemic causes of poverty so all may be fed. The Self-Development of People program invests in communities responding to their experiences of oppression, poverty and injustice and educates Presbyterians about the impact of these issues.
The One Great Hour of Sharing is the single, largest way that Presbyterians come together every year to work for a better world. We will dedicate our gifts to the offering on Palm Sunday, March 25. Learn more at: http://specialofferings.pcusa.org/oghs
Calling all Vegetable Gardeners!
We are exploring the idea of starting a “Pantry Patch” - planting a vegetable garden in the strip of land along the west side of the back parking lot (along the metal fence). The produce and herbs grown would be free to folks in the neighborhood and used to supply the food pantry over the summer. If you enjoy gardening and want to help, please talk with Dave Kelley so we can see if there is enough interest to start this unique community outreach!

Holy Week Bible Reading and Prayer
You were a man of suffering acquainted with grief, loved and despised in equal measure. You understand humanity, know our failings, love us despite the people that we are. When we, like Peter, deny you by word or action, forgive us. When we, like Judas, are tempted to follow a different path, forgive us. When we, like those in the crowd allow you to be crucified, forgive us. Bring us to the foot of the Cross to stand next to the one who, looking into your eyes declared ‘Surely this is the Son of God'
