The Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce serves a community of 6,000 businesses serving a regional population of about 120,000. We create special occasions like the Nanaimo Business Awards, Vancouver Island’s largest business trade show: Business Expo held during Small Business Month; our Christmas Luncheon & Auction with close to 500 guests and many other entertaining events connecting business professionals.
Throughout the year, we offer unique and valuable professional development opportunities to members, particularly with our ‘Good Morning Mastery’ series. We present monthly luncheons that regularly attract 100+ guests to hear speakers of social and economic significance. We shine the spotlight on individual member businesses by helping them host networking events called ‘Business After Business’. Welcome To NanaimoThe City of Nanaimo is a community of 90,000 located
on the east side of Vancouver Island, approximately 110
km north of Victoria, the capital of British Columbia.
The Regional District of Nanaimo has a population of
approximately 150,000. The primary trading and services
area served by Nanaimo is the 400,000 people living
north of the Malahat – about half of Vancouver Island!
OUR HISTORYNanaimo was first settled thousands of years ago by the Coast Salish Peoples who named the area “Sne-ney-mous” which means “a meeting or gathering place”. The Coast Salish traveled from villages along the Nanaimo River and False Narrows to build longhouses at Departure Bay.
The Snuneymuxw First Nation is one of the largest Nations in B.C. with a population of over 1,700 people. Snuneymuxw territory encompasses one of the most productive and resource rich areas at the heart of the Salish Sea.
Change began with Imperial Spain’s explorers charting these coastal waters in 1791. Control over the area passed to the British Empire in the early 19th century and the first settlers arrived in the early 1800’s and set up a trading post, which established Nanaimo as an important hub of commerce. A fort was erected by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1853 and is now a restored landmark. From 1852 until 1952, Nanaimo was primarily a coal town. Originally, coal-burning ships refueled here and coal was exported in large quantities from numerous mines in the area. The City of Nanaimo was incorporated as a municipality in 1874.
By the middle of the 20th century, increased demand for lumber and a declining need for coal brought the area’s thriving forests to the forefront. Nanaimo’s fishery also maintained a high profile as an economic driver during this time. Around the turn of the millennium, economic conditions were changing dramatically and resource industries started to lose their position as the driving forces of business and employment in the region.
Nanaimo has since risen in prominence as a centre for education, health care, government services, tech innovation & development, communications, tourism and as a transportation centre. This changing economic landscape will shape Nanaimo’s future and its changing demographics. Meanwhile, Nanaimo continues to develop as a centre for the meeting and movement of products and people – a gathering place, as always.
CLIMATENanaimo boasts one of the mildest and sunniest climates in Canada, experiencing close to 1850 hours of sunshine annually. The city is protected from Pacific weather systems by a range of mountains which run the length of Vancouver Island. Nanaimo’s climate is also moderated by the Strait of Georgia.
The region’s range of moderate precipitation makes it the ideal place for year-round recreational pursuits. You can truly golf, sail, surf and ski all on the same day for many months of the year!

Once the smaller cousin to B.C.’s growing
metropolises, in the last five years, Nanaimo has
surpassed the national rate for attracting new people
to the city. In fact, from 2011 to 2016 almost 7,000
people came to the waterfront city – a positive trend
that’s being echoed by its local businesses.
For Harbour Air Seaplanes, a BC-based company that’s been operating in the city for almost 20 years, and across B.C. for more than 35, the airline has experienced tremendous growth. Since opening its Nanaimo terminal in 1999 the operation has grown from a handful of local staff to 25 today, welcoming more than 70,000 passengers through its doors in 2017.
We sat down with Harbour Air’s Nanaimo Base Manager John Winter to chat about the growth of business in Nanaimo and how the company’s been able to leverage this growth into corporate success:
What do you think is driving the demand for people travelling in and out of Nanaimo?I believe the lifestyle and lower cost of living that we enjoy on the mid island is driving huge demand for the area. Add the growing pressures on work and home life with the convenient options for getting in and out of the city, and Nanaimo is becoming incredibly attractive for new businesses and commuters.
We’re seeing that passengers value the benefits of living the west coast lifestyle with the ease, affordability and convenience of commuting by seaplane. Our daily schedule allows passengers to travel, door to door, from Vancouver to Nanaimo within the hour or less – similar, if not significantly quicker and often less frustrating than your typical commute within the Greater Vancouver Area. As the city grows, so too does its attraction for tourists.
What are some of the trends you’ve seen in the Nanaimo market?
Nanaimo in particular is very price driven and aware of the value of a product. Certainly, we’ve noticed travelers are keen to take advantage of special deals or pricing to try out
new operators. However, for each the tourism,
business and leisure travel markets, we’re seeing a renewed emphasis on the entire customer experience. For us, each of our employees plays an incredible role on the guest experience – which we believe begins well before and ends well after their time on the aircraft. From booking their flight, to text updates and the greeting they receive when they walk in our doors, if the experience and level of service doesn’t meet their expectations, customers are quick to react.
What factors do you contribute to the success of Harbour Air’s growth in Nanaimo?
Consistency, reliability and an engrained commitment to customer service. We offer an incredibly unique west coast experience. However, our success is driven by delivering this service with a steadfast commitment to our core values of safety, service, integrity and team spirit. Each member of our team – from the dock crew, to front counter and management – is empowered to do what’s right for our customers and each other. This creates a level of trust and authenticity that truly resonates with both our team and passengers. As a result, while our business continues to grow we’ve also been named a platinum recipient of Canada’s Best Managed companies, have been honoured as Business of the Year on Vancouver Island, Canada’s 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures and BC’s Top 55 Employers, among others.
What’s next for Harbour Air? Is there room for more growth in Nanaimo?
Absolutely! One of our biggest and most successful milestones to date, was the merger of West Coast Air in 2010. Looking ahead, we’re always looking for new opportunities to grow and expand. Whether we look further into the tourism sector with island packages and escapes, expanded flights into the States or “hubbing” more flights to access other locations we serve, I believe the next big milestone would be upgrading or rebuilding our facility. This would give us the ability to provide and be part of the center piece of the Nanaimo Harbour in an even larger capacity – enticing more businesses, residents and benefiting the city as a whole.

Business compositionAs with Canadian business composition, the majority of the businesses in the Nanaimo region are small to medium size enterprises. Approximately 88 percent of the businesses are small, employing fewer than 19 people; 155 businesses (4%) have more than 50 employees.
Businesses operating in Nanaimo are required to have a City of Nanaimo business licence. As of Dec 31, 2015 there were 5,782 licences issued for businesses operating in the city.
Most of Nanaimo’s businesses are locally owned operations. 67% describe themselves as locally owned and operated, 3% are franchise operations and 9.49% are branch offices of larger companies.
Home-based businesses account for about 36% of total business licences issued. Many people choose to use their home as a “business incubator” to test their initial business ideas and later move into commercial space.
The figure below details the number of business licences issued by the city of Nanaimo, by industry sector. As of December 31, 2015, the construction sector had the highest number of licenses, accounting for 17.4% of the total. The retail sector has the second highest number of business licences accounting for 14.0% of the total. The chart does not include unlicensed businesses, government service operations, or not-for-profit organizations. City of Nanaimo data includes businesses of every size including single proprietors.
Trade areaNanaimo’s location has helped the city develop as an important retail, service, transportation and distribution centre for central and northern Vancouver Island. The city has about 57% of the Nanaimo Regional District population, but has 75% of the region’s retail and service floor space.
The city’s primary trade area comprises about 154,495 people drawn from the Nanaimo Regional District and the town of Ladysmith. This trade area has been growing due to population growth. On average, the primary trade area grew by 5.7% between 2006 and 2011.

TRANSPORTATIONOne of Nanaimo’s greatest natural assets is its geographic location. It accounts for its early establishment as a ‘gathering place’ and has led to its acknowledgement as a transportation hub for the island. An all-weather airport, floatplane terminal, 3 BC Ferries terminals, a recently enhanced highway system (Island Parkway), and a public transit system spanning a widely spread-out community. The average commute time from the outer boundaries of the city to downtown is 20 minutes.
AirThe Nanaimo Airport – YCD, operated by the Nanaimo Airport Commission, is located 15 km south of the city. It is an all-weather (ILS) airport capable of handling medium size passenger jets (Boeing 737’s etc). The airport’s commercial interests are served by carriers such as WestJet, Air Canada & Island Express offering multiple flights daily to Vancouver, Calgary, Victoria, Abbotsford, Boundary Bay, Sunshine Coast and Comox. The Nanaimo Seaplane Terminal, operated by the Nanaimo Port Authority, provides customer comfort and technical/security services for seaplane flights from downtown Nanaimo aboard carriers Harbour Air (www.harbourair.com), Sunshine Coast Air (www.sunshinecoastair.com) and West Coast Air. Charter flights are also available. Multiple daily regularly scheduled flights to YVR South, the Sunshine Coast and the downtown Vancouver Float Plane Terminal are available. Daily Helijet service operates from the Port of Nanaimo Cruise Ship Terminal, next to downtown Nanaimo, landing at their Heliport on the downtown Vancouver waterfront next to SkyTrain, WestCoast Express, and Seabus in the heart of the waterfront commercial district. www.helijet.com
FerriesRegularly scheduled ferry service is available between Nanaimo and Vancouver via the Departure Bay/Horseshoe Bay route (1 hour 40 minutes) or the Duke Point/Tsawwassen (2 hour) route. The third ferry terminal operated by BC Ferries runs between downtown Nanaimo and Gabriola Island (40 minutes). Adjacent communities offer BC Ferry services to Gulf Islands.
