FSU VS. FLORIDAFor the first time in three years, the Seminoles and Gators will be able to play their annual match in the Fresh From Florida Sunshine Showdown on its originally scheduled date, after Hurricanes Hermine and Irma impacted the contests in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
Overall, Florida State is 11-13-0 all-time in the series with Florida, and have won four of the last six matchups.
In their last 20 matches against SEC opponents, dating back to 2010, the Seminoles have posted a 17-3 record, including a 10-1 mark in home matches.
FSU VS. SOUTH ALABAMAFlorida State and South Alabama are meeting for the 11th time on Sunday with the Seminoles holding a 9-1 advantage in the all-time series. The Seminoles are 7-0 at home against the Jaguars and have outscored USA 32-3 in those matches. The two teams have met in each of the last five seasons, with just two coming in the regular season.
ACC PLAYER OF THE WEEKFlorida State freshmen Yujie Zhao was outstanding in the midfield for the Seminoles in matches against No. 7 USC and No. 2 UCLA, which earned her ACC Offensive Player of the Week honors on September 4.
The Shanghai, China native facilitated the FSU offense and defense that held the Trojans to just six shots, and four in regulation, in the scoreless draw on Friday. On Sunday, Zhao was involved in three of the four FSU goals as the Noles domintated the Bruins with a 4-1 win. Zhao assisted on the first goal of the game on a header by Anna Patten and later found Kristen McFarland to make it 3-1 early in the second half. Zhao closed out the scoring in the game with a blast from 25 yards in the 89th minute.
SPREADING THE WEALTHThe Seminoles have had a lot of success this season offensively as FSU has scored 16 goals through the first six games of the season. What makes it difficult for opponents to stop, however, is that those 16 goals have been scored by 12 different players so far this season.
The 12 different goal scorers already ranks in a tie for 11th in program history and exceeds the 11 goal scorers from the entire 2017 season. There are five players that have previously scored collegiate goals that have not yet scored in 2018 - Gloriana Villalobos, Gabby Carle, Macayla Edwards, Alexa Orrante and Taylor Hallmon.
FRESH PRODUCEFlorida State freshmen have done a great job at transitioning to the next level as the newcomers have scored seven of FSU’s 16 goals this season and have combined to make 25 starts. Yujie Zhao leads the team with eight points on three goals and two assists, while Kristina Lynch is tied for the second-leading goal scorer with two. Jaelin Howell and Kirsten Pavlisko has each scored one goal each, while redshirt freshman goalkeeper Brooke Bollinger has helped post five clean sheets in the first six matches of the season.
NO GOALS FOR YOU!With five shutouts to start the 2018 season, Florida State has set a program record by not allowing a goal in the first 507:27 of play in 2018.
The five shutouts surpassed the previous record of three games set in 2009 (349:18), 2010 (343:23) and 2016 (294:23).
Overall, FSU has allowed only two goals in its last 867:12 of play, dating back to the 2017 season, with the only goals in that span coming on the road at No. 1-ranked, and eventual national champion, Stanford in the 2017 NCAA Tournament and another versus No. 2 UCLA at home on September 2, 2018.

COMING OFF THE BENCHFor many players that come to Florida State, they are not used to coming off the bench, as they have often been one of the best players on their teams growing up. With 24 players that includes a mix of talent from all over the world, it can be difficult to strike into the starting XI, but for those that may not be out there for the opening whistle, they have still been able to stay focused and execute when they have entered the game as six of Florida State’s 16 goals, and two of its 15 assists, have been scored by non-starters, including two goals each against Troy, at Wisconsin and versus Middle Tennessee.
MULTI GOAL/ASSIST GAMESFreshman Kristina Lynch found the back of the net on two occasions on August 19 in a 5-0 win over Troy for her first collegiate goal and first multi-goal game. It is the second year in a row that a freshman has recorded a multi-goal game.
Redshirt sophomore Malia Berkely aided on two of the three goals on August 26 in FSU’s 3-0 win over Middle Tennessee. She started the play for the game’s first goal by Jaelin Howell in the eighth minute with a deep run down the right side, while her corner kick in the 63rd minute found Dallas Dorosy in the middle of the box for a perfect header.
Yujie Zhao helped the Seminoles record a dominant 4-1 win over No. 2 UCLA on September 2 by tallying two assists and scoring a goal of her own.
LOCK DOWN DEFENSEThe Seminoles have been outstanding on the defensive end this season, allowing just one goal through the first six matches, but what is also impressive is how few chances the opposing teams have had.
Florida State has outshot its opponents in all six games on the year, and has been the first team to record a shot in five of the six matches. The average time of the first shot by FSU opponents in 2018 is 31:48, including Vanderbilt and Troy that didn’t record a shot in the first half.
ACC PRESEASON POLLAfter earning ACC Championships in five of the last seven seasons, the Florida State soccer program is again expected to have a strong season in 2018 as the Seminoles were voted to finish second in the league, as announced by the ACC on Monday.
FSU tallied 174 points and trailed only North Carolina who received 183 points and four first-place votes. However, the Noles topped all schools with five first-place votes and were also one of two schools to place multiple members on the 2018 Preseason All-ACC Women’s Soccer Team – senior Natalia Kuikka and junior Deyna Castellanos.

AUGUST SUCCESSThe Seminoles continued their early season success with five games in the month of August. FSU owns an all-time record of 47-8-2 and is unbeaten in 41 of its last 44 matches played during the month of August. The Noles are 38-3-1 in August under head coach Mark Krikorian and have outscored their opponents 139-41 all-time in August with 32 shutouts.
CLEAN SHEET AUGUSTFinishing the month of August with a 4-0-1 record and not allowing a goal throughout the entire month, it marked the fifth time that the Seminoles have not surrendered a goal during the first month of the season.
The 2016, 2010 and 2009 teams all went 3-0-0 without a goal in the month of August, while the 2002 squad played to a scoreless draw in its only game in August. Honorable mention to the 1995 and 2007 teams that didn’t allow a goal in August, but mostly because those seasons started in September.
PUT IT ON FRAMEThe Noles have dominated their opponents offensively this season and hold a 95-23 advantage in shots, but those shots have been very precise over the first three weeks as 50 of the have been on goal, with 16 goals scored. Patten has started and played all 90 minutes in every match for England in the tournament as the Lionesses won their group after wins over defending champion Korea DPR and Mexico, along with a 1-1 draw against Brazil. England came from behind to post a 2-1 win against the Netherlands on August 17 to advance to the semifinals for the first time in program history. England lost to Japan, 2-0, in the semis and faced France on August 24 in the third-place match, taking home the bronze medal with a 4-2 win in penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw.

MAC HERMANN TROPHYA pair of Seminole student-athletes earned a spot on the preseason watch list for the 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy. Senior Natalia Kuikka and junior Deyna Castellanos were among the 45 players recognized.
It marked the second year in a row that both Kuikka and Castellanos were named to the Watch List.
It is the 15th straight season that the Seminoles have had a student-athlete named to the preseason Watch List and FSU has had at least two players selected 11 times in the last 13 seasons.
In 2007, Mami Yamaguchi won the MAC Hermann Trophy, the first and only player in school history to win the award. Yamaguchi led the country in points that season with 66, while finishing second in goals (24) and assists (18).
FRESH FACESThe Seminoles welcome six newcomers to the squad in 2018, including five freshman and a redshirt senior transfer.
Freshmen Kristina Lynch (Granger, Ind.) and Yujie Zhao (Shanghai, China) started at Florida State for the Spring 2018 semester and were joined in the fall by Kirsten Pavlisko (Middleburg, Fla.), Jaelin Howell (Lone Tree, Colo.) and Makala Thomas (Los Angeles, Calif.)
Coming to Tallahassee for her last year of eligibility, Alexa Orrante (Chino Hills, Calif.) will play for the Seminoles after playing three years at CSU Bakersfield.
A quartet of Seminoles will see action in 2018 after not playing in 2017 as Malia Berkely, Kristen McFarland and Caroline Jeffers were all out with an injury, and Brooke Bollinger was redshirted as a true freshman.
SPRING 2018 EUROPE TRIPThrough generous support of its booster club and fans, the Florida State Soccer program was able to travel overseas for an 11-day tour throughout the Netherlands, Belgium and France on May 5-15.
