CHASING RECORDSJunior forward Deyna Castellanos has been a prolific goal scorer throughout her young career, earning the Golden Boot at the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup and the Bronze Boot in 2016 to set the all-time record for goals scored in U-17 World Cup history at 11.
She has brought that same level to Tallahassee as the Venezuela native is already among the top 10 in program history in four different categories, in just her third season in the Garnet and Gold.
Castellanos leads the team with seven goals scored in 2018, which gives her 33 for her career and ranks fifth in FSU history. Adding in her nine assists, Castellanos’ 75 points is tied for the seventh-most at Florida State.
Her 13 game-winning goals are third-most ever at Florida State, while her seven multi-goal games are the third-highest for a Seminole soccer player.
FSU FINALLY WINS AT UVADespite a storied history that included several ACC regular season and tournament championships, numerous trips to the NCAA College Cup and winning the 2014 NCAA National Championship, there was still one thing that the Florida State soccer program hadn’t done - defeat Virginia on the road at Klöckner Stadium.
The Seminoles entered the match with a 0-9-1 record all-time on the road against the Cavaliers, but had an outstanding showing and shutout Virginia 2-0. Deyna Castellanos scored the first goal in the 18th minute, marking the first goal scored by FSU at Virginia since 2011 and the first time that the Noles had held a lead on the road against UVA since 2007. Anna Patten’s goal in the 44th marked the first time that the Seminoles had ever had a two-goal lead on the Cavaliers on the road.
SPREADING THE WEALTHThe Seminoles have had a lot of success this season offensively as FSU has scored 37 goals through 19 games of the season. What makes it difficult for opponents to stop, however, is that those 37 goals have been scored by 13 different players so far this season. In addition, there are 10 players that have scored multiple goals on the season, led by Deyna Castellanos with seven.
The 13 different goal scorers already ranks in a tie for eighth in program history and exceeds the 11 goal scorers from the entire 2017 season. There are four players that have previously scored collegiate goals that have not yet scored in 2018 - Gloriana Villalobos, Gabby Carle, Macayla Edwards and Taylor Hallmon.

FRESH PRODUCEFlorida State freshmen have done a great job at transitioning to the next level as the newcomers have scored 11 of FSU’s 37 goals this season and have combined to make 83 starts. Yujie Zhao is second on the team with 15 points on six goals and three assists, while Kristina Lynch is tied for the fourth-leading goal scorer with three. Jaelin Howell and Kirsten Pavlisko have each scored one goal apiece, while redshirt freshman goalkeeper Brooke Bollinger has helped post 11 clean sheets in the first 19 matches of the season.
COMING OFF THE BENCHFor many players that come to Florida State, they are not used to coming off the bench, as they have often been one of the best players on their teams growing up. With 24 players that includes a mix of talent from all over the world, it can be difficult to strike into the starting XI, but for those that may not be out there for the opening whistle, they have still been able to stay focused and execute when they have entered the game as 11 of Florida State’s 37 goals, and six of its 34 assists, have been scored by non-starters, including two goals each against Troy, Wisconsin and Middle Tennessee.
EVERYONE GETS INVOLVEDFlorida State’s 13 individual goal scorers also ranks in a tie for fourth in the NCAA this season, trailing only Mercer (16), Stanford (14) and Virginia (14).

MULTI-POINT GAMESFreshman Kristina Lynch found the back of the net on two occasions on August 19 in a 5-0 win over Troy for her first collegiate goal and first multi-goal game. It is the second year in a row that a freshman has recorded a multi-goal game.
Redshirt sophomore Malia Berkely aided on two of the three goals on August 26 in FSU’s 3-0 win over Middle Tennessee. She started the play for the game’s first goal by Jaelin Howell in the eighth minute with a deep run down the right side, while her corner kick in the 63rd minute found Dallas Dorosy in the middle of the box for a perfect header.
Yujie Zhao helped the Noles record a dominant 4-1 win over No. 2 UCLA on September 2 by tallying two assists & scoring a goal of her own.
Deyna Castellanos recorded the seventh multi-goal match of her career on September 20 against Virginia Tech, putting two in the back of the net in FSU’s 3-0 win over the Hokies.
Castellanos and Kaycie Tillman each posted a goal and an assist in FSU’s 4-0 win on the road at Notre Dame on September 27.
Castellanos had her third multi-point game with a goal & two assists on the road at Pitt (Oct 18).
LOCK DOWN DEFENSEThe Seminoles have been outstanding on the defensive end this season, allowing just eight goals through their 19 games this season, including one on a penalty kick and another on an own goal, but what is also impressive is how few chances the opposing teams have had.
Florida State has outshot its opponents in 17 of 19 games on the year, and has put 153 shots on goal to its opponents’ 43. The average time of the first shot on goal by FSU opponents in 2018 is 35:17, including Wisconsin that didn’t have a shot on goal for the entire match, Miami didn’t get an SOG until the 97th minute and Vanderbilt, Troy and Wake Forest that didn’t record a shot on goal in the first half.

HOME SWEET HOMEFSU is 150-13-8 at home since 2005 when Mark Krikorian became head coach at Florida State.
The Noles are 82-5-5 in their last 92 matches played at home, dating back to 2011. FSU has 26 wins over ranked opponents over that time.
ROAD SWEET ROADThe Noles are also impressive away from the friendly confines of the Seminole Soccer Complex, posting a true road record of 30-12-8 since 2013, as well as a neutral mark of 11-4-2.
FSU has lost just 11 times in its last 43 road games - including 10 one-goal matches with six against ranked teams - a 3-2 defeat at No. 14 UF on August 30, 2015, a 1-0 loss at No. 2 UVA on October 25, 2015, a 1-0 defeat at No. 16 North Carolina on October 27, 2016, falling 2-0 at No. 4 Duke on October 8, 2017, a 2-1 loss at No. 22 Wake Forest on October 15, 2017, dropping 1-0 at No. 1 Stanford 1-0 on November 19, 2017, falling 2-1 at RV Boston College on Setpember 23, 2018 and a 1-0 defeat in overtime at Miami on October 25, 2018.
AUGUST SUCCESSThe Seminoles continued their early season success with five games in the month of August. FSU owns an all-time record of 47-8-2 and is unbeaten in 41 of its last 44 matches played during the month of August. The Noles are 38-3-1 in August under head coach Mark Krikorian and have outscored their opponents 139-41 all-time in August with 32 shutouts.
CLEAN SHEET AUGUSTAfter finishing the month of August with a 4-0-1 record and not allowing a goal throughout the entire month, it marked the fifth time that the Seminoles have not surrendered a goal during the first month of the season.
The 2016, 2010 and 2009 teams all went 3-0-0 without a goal in the month of August, while the 2002 squad played to a scoreless draw in its only game in August. Honorable mention to the 1995 and 2007 teams that didn’t allow a goal in August, but primarily because those seasons started in September.
UNCONQUERED NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULEFor the first time since 2013, the Florida State ended its non-conference regular season schedule with an unbeaten record, posting a 7-0-1 mark through its eight non-conference games.
It marked the fifth time in program history - all under head coach Mark Krikorian - that the Seminoles did not lose a non-conference game, joining 2013 (5-0-2), 2012 (6-0-0), 2006 (8-0-0) and 2005 (8-0-0).

In 2007, Mami Yamaguchi won the MAC Hermann Trophy, the first and only player in school history to win the award. Yamaguchi led the country in points that season with 66, while finishing second in goals (24) and assists (18).
NOLES AT U-20 WORLD CUPFlorida State has a long history of student-athletes playing at the international level and this year was no different as a trio of Seminoles competed for their home countries at the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
