EDITORIAL OF KARIMA DELLI

Let’s help startups create the mobility of tomorrow! If our life in transit is too often made difficult, it is because it is punctuated by traffic jams, pollution and even road accidents. What caused this? A system of mobility that has been constructed for decades without the main stakeholders: us, the citizens. In the 21st century, we have the choice: not losing time in transport is possible! The recipe is simple: we, the citizens and entrepreneurs, must create our own mobility throughout Europe. Carsharing and carpooling are already changing the face of transport, but that is just the beginning.

The issues at stake are immense, the challenges all the more exciting: giving priority to everyday transport; reducing the divides between neighbourhoods, rural areas and city centres; eradicating air pollution; preserving every life on our roads; giving each and every individual access to transportation with competitive prices; moving goods quickly across the continent.

Startup creators are already working on it! In this changing world, they have realised that we are inventing the future, here and now. Our duty, for political and economic decisionmakers alike, is therefore to support them and give them all the space they need to bring their projects to life.

Without technological innovation, how can we hope to make our mobility sustainable and efficient? How can we overcome the symbolic boundaries between what we called our individual “means of transport“ and instead consider all the means at our disposal as part of a whole, such as walking, cycling, taking the train or the car? How, now that the death knell of the conventional engine is sounding, can we finally ensure the emergence of clean and intelligent vehicles?

Let’s not hesitate any longer: let’s adopt a pan-European approach, one which is open and inclusive, so that public institutions, established economic stakeholders and startups collaborate in a world at the service of the mobility of Europeans.

This booming sector is an opportunity for the whole of Europe. We have all the ingredients at our disposal to build the future champions of sustainable mobility: talents and innovative ideas, successful universities and high-performance business incubators, committed businesses and citizens, extraordinary infrastructure.

Let us not be afraid to support initiatives that are already shaping the daily lives of millions of citizens. All the partners of the European Startup Prize for Mobility are committed to helping Europeans startups to realize their dreams. With just one goal in mind: that their dreams benefit Europe’s 500 million people. Let’s make intelligence a collective adventure, starting on 7 December 2017.

Karima Delli, ecologist member of the European Parliament President of the Committee on Transport and Tourism, Founder of the European Startup Prize for Mobility

MOBILITY, EUROPEANS AND STARTUPS

2H/day in transit

65% use their car daily

N°1 means of transport

275 € is the cost per citizen of the time spent on average in traffic jams, or nearly 1% of the total per capita GDP of the European Union

61% think that public investments in the area of intermodal transport are insufficient

3. MOBILITY IN 2030 WILL MEAN

2. TRANSPORTATION IS AN ISSUE FOR HEALTH

500 000 deaths per year in Europe are due to air pollution

6 000 €/second: the cost of air pollution in Europe

2.6 billion fewer hours spent in traffic jams for Europeans

77% think that innovation in the field of mobility will have positive impacts on their everyday lives

40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030

80 million fewer cars in Europe

50% of European startups have not yet passed the earliest stages of development. (European Startup Monitoring study 2016)

50 billion € have been invested in R&D devoted to transport by European companies

4. STARTUPS WITH UNLIMITED POTENTIAL MUST RELY ON EUROPE

More than 90% of startups are satisfied with their business opportunities (European Startup Monitoring study 2016)

89.5% of startups consider that their products are new on the market and almost half think they are genuine levers of innovation (European Startup Monitoring study 2016)

THE MOBILITY OF TOMORROW MEANS:• Clean mobility which reduces the environmental footprint of our movements thanks to electric vehicles and shared mobility: “I take an electric self-service scooter to go to work.” • A more inclusive transport system which reduces social and territorial divisions: “I live in an underserved area, so I get my packages delivered by drone!” • A more connected transport system carried by the digital revolution: “I use my smartphone to reserve the bike stationed downstairs.”

• A coherent mobility system through the development of transnational intermodal platforms which offer a true alternative to industrial vehicles: “To go on vacation, I carpool from Genoa to Milan, and then I take a train to Krakow.”

• A safer transport system: “My vehicle receives data to prevent traffic accidents.”

On the one hand, Europe’s transport and logistics giants are already demonstrating a real commitment to sustainable and connected mobility. But on the other hand, today’s European startups, which are vectors of innovation capable of revolutionising the sector, need support to develop their vision in Europe and beyond.

#1 THE OPPORTUNITY OF A EUROPEAN MARKET The European market is naturally diverse in terms of needs and means of consumption. It must adapt its strategy to specific markets: different regulations, market sizes, consumer habits, tax policy, recruitment, financing, etc.

At the same time, Europe also benefits from extraordinary infrastructure, high qualifications, a good quality of life and a single market in constant integration.

#2FINDING INVESTORS European startups raise fewer funding than their Asian or US counterparts for expanding abroad. To move forward, they must look toward Europe to have access to investors from across the continent and a more global network, as well as to benefit from European funds (H2020 ...).

#3DRAWING ON A PRIVATE AND PUBLIC ECOSYSTEM The stakeholders in place – the large public and private groups – aim to collaborate together to a greater extent. We must go further, putting faith in startups by signing contracts, opening mobility data and simplifying internal procedures to become more agile.

European citizens want to travel more quickly and easily while respecting the environment. Through the European Startup Prize, transportation stakeholders, large companies and young startups, both public and private, are coming together today to shape the mobility sector of tomorrow and respond to the needs of citizens on all territories.
