A Closer look at the Patriots.... A Closer look at the Patriots....• A new starter for the Patriots

impressed in his first game of the season. Gavin Wilkinson threw for 257 yards and two touchdowns in his first ever start for the Patriots

• The Patriots were especially effective last week in slowing down the run for the George-town Tigers. The team allowed only 51 yards of rushing in the loss.

• Cumberlands has two talented receivers in Darius Young and D’Andre Boggs. Youing last week went for over 130 yards receiving and will be a ver tough matchup for the experienced Cumberland seconday.

• The talented Patriots have seen a reviving of their program under Matt Rhymer. He has taken them to back to back 10-2 records over the past two seasons including last year when the team went deep into the playoffs

The offense averaged 20.0 points per game while averaging 324.9 total yards per game. In 2019, Mathis, second season as head coach, the team finished with a 5-5 record. After wins in the first three games of the season, the NAIA ranked Cumberland as the no. 23 team in the country. His triple option offense had the Phoenix runnig game going to the tuner of 185 yards per game which was the 22nd best mark in the NAIA Mathis served as an assistant coach for 10 seasons at Shorter University when the Hawks started their program in the NAIA in 2005. He was the team’s offensive coordinator his last five years at Shorter, including during the transition to NCAA Division II. Mathis was a member of the Shorter staff for the inaugural season in 2005 and served five years as the team’s offensive line coach. The Hawks led the NAIA in rushing, won the Mid-South Conference championship and earned the program’s first-ever postseason playoff berth in 2008. Two players earned All-America honors and a dozen offensive linemen were named All-Mid-South during those five seasons. He moved into the role of offensive coordinator from 2010-14, working with running backs for two seasons and quarterbacks and fullbacks the final three. Shorter ranked second nationally in rushing at 310.9 yards per game and posted 30.5 points per contest in 2010 and ranked third in the country in rushing (271.9), averaging 30.0 points per outing in 2011, the program’s last in the NAIA.

In 2012, the first transition year to Division II, the Hawks ranked ninth nation-ally in rushing at 268.5 yards per game and ranked third the Gulf South Confer-ence in rushing (227.9) and second in time of possession.

Shorter ranked third in total offense in 2013, with fullback Bradley Moon lead-ing the GSC and ranking sixth in rushing yards and quarterback Eric Dodson ranking fifth in the conference in total offense. Shorter ranked third in the Gulf South and 22nd nationally in rushing in 2014 with 225.3 yards per contest.Mathis was the head coach the last two seasons at St. Francis High School in Alpharetta, Ga., posting a 2-8 record in 2016 with freshmen and sophomores making up 74 percent of the roster. He registered a 4-6 mark in 2017 with the Knights. Prior to his time at Shorter, Mathis worked four years at Trion City Schools in Trion, Ga., coaching the offensive line all four seasons as well as serving as de-fensive coordinator for two years. He was also the wrestling coach for two years and the golf coach for two seasons. Mathis earned his bachelor’s in History with a minor in Political Science from Georgia Southern in 1996 and received his master’s in Leadership from Shorter in 2010. sNOw practiceCumberland will enter this game with very little practice after a snow and ice storm rocked the region. The storm re-sulted in campus being closed through the end of the week. The men should be well rested headed into Sunday’s game.

Phoenix rivalry Game These two programs have met alot over the yearsincluding last year when UC handled Cu 26-8. The Phoenix have a tough matchup historically with UC at their home field where the Cumber-lands has won 7 of the 13

The 2019 season recap 2019 was an up and down one for the Phoenix as the team jumped out to a hot 3-0 start that saw them ranked at No. 23 in the NAIA. Cumberland then faced a tough three-game stretch with matchups against 24th ranked Keiser University, #10 Lindsey Wilson Col-lege, and #11 University of the Cum-berlands. The Phoenix fell to 3-3 after going through the gauntlet of Keiser, the Cumberlands, and Lindsey Wilson, who all finished the season ranked inside the Top-10 and made deep runs in the playoffs. The team managed to finish the season with a .500 record

after defeating Bethel University and Campbellsville University but falling to Pikeville and Georgetown College.

Where the Phoenix excelled in 2019Last season, Cumberland was one of the best teams in the country at get-ting to the QB. They ranked sixth in the NAIA with just north of three sacks per game. The Phoenix defense was also 23rd in the NAIA in total yards allowed per game with 321.2 allowed and 25th in pass yards allowed per game with 182.1. On the offensive side of the ball, Mathis’s triple-option at-tack finished ranked 22nd in the NAIA with 185.6 rushing yards per game.

Fresh Faced OffenseThe 2021 season brings in a lot of new faces for the Phoenix as the team is only returning four starters on of-fense. The offensive line, the team’s most experienced unit, returns three of those starters this season including redshirt-sophomore Josh Mathis, red-shirt-senior Greg Davis, and redshirt-senior Wyatt Page. Cumberland is also trotting out a new man under center in Wade Cartwright. Cartwright had a decent start in his first game going 6-10 for 85 yards.

Saints hold off the Phoenix 19-14

The Phoenix scored a late fourth-quarter touchdown, but it was called back after a holding penalty allow-ing Thomas More’s defense to hold on and get the 19-14 victory in the spring 2021 season opener.

Cumberland (0-1) struggled offen-sively only putting up 195 yards of total offense and converting just 20% (2-of-10) of their 3rd down tries. 110 yards came from the ground while redshirt freshman quarterback, Wade Cartwright, tossed for 85 passing yards on 6-of-11 attempts.

Sophomore running back Treylon Sheppard toted the rock 20 times for 65 yards and two touchdowns while Cartwright added 32 yards. Wide receiver Jaylen Taylor hauled in three catches for 77 yards.

The Cumberland defense forced two takeaways in the game but struggled to get off the field on third down allowing Thomas More to convert on 10-of-20 tries and 2-of-3 fourth-down tries. Cumberland allowed 391 yards of total offense led by sophomore quarterback Jay Volpenhein. Volpen-hein tossed for 220 yards on 18-of-34 attempts and rushed for 91 yards on the ground and one score. Monalo Caldwell ran for 43 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries as Thomas More picked up 171 yards on the ground.
