But hopefully by the time you read this we may be cooling down, awakening from the summer doldrums, and gearing up for some fun and busy months ahead for EGA! Looking forward to our September meeting with our potluck, and our huge Show and Share of what we did all summer. And don’t forget the Summer Challenge! There may still be time to finish a few projects before September 6th — I Hope.... A reminder, please see the EGA stitchalong notice later in this newsletter. The September SAL project will be in support of Alzheimer’s Research. There are 3 sets of 4 projects each. They must be ordered by August 31 st . Let’s show our support by ordering and stitching one of these sets. Then the Deborah Mitek workshop is coming up in October. I took this same class, “Garden View” from Deborah last year and she is a fun and interesting teacher, with lots of hints to help you with this beautiful project. Also this Fall we will be having elections, and we are always looking for a few good women”. So please let me know If you’re interested in serving on our board either by email or phone call, or in person. Regrettably, as of this month our outstanding Hospitality Chairperson Claudia Hester has had to step down, so we are immediately in need of help in this area. We are so very grateful for the many years that Claudia has filled this role with such care and attention. Thank you Claudia! Wherever you are spending your summer, we look forward to seeing you in September or as soon as you return to Tucson. Meantime, wishing you happy hours with your needle in hand, Helen

For the August Stitch‐a‐Long (SAL), we are stitching a beautiful stumpwork butterfly!  The project this month was designed and contributed exclusively for members of the EGA Stitch‐a‐Long by Judy Jeroy.  You can find the pattern and instructions here: egausa.org/free.   While you're visiting the EGA website, you can get caught up on other patterns that we've featured on the SAL page.

A couple of notes on this project: This is an excellent project to use with stash threads.  Judy used DMC's Satin Floss (also called Rayon Floss) to get a very shiny appearance for her butterfly.  You can also use regular stranded cotton floss.  Your butterfly just won't be as shiny.  DMC Memory Wire is used to create the dimensional wings.  Sadly, DMC recently discontinued this product.  That said, it's still available in many outlets and the instructions include substitutes such as Kreinik's Wired Braid (formerly called Hot Wire).   Posting thanks to Kate Gaunt, EGA stitch‐a‐long Administrator and Leslie Gigliardi, President, EGA National

Advance notice for September SAL project!

Spring Splendor

Teacher: Kay Stanis

Finally, after that long cold winter and the long cold drizzle that melted the gray snow and rinsed the earth clean, comes the time of generous sun. Blossoms exuberantly play in the golden light and spring walks among us again. The foundation for this bouquet is Dupioni silk and the silk fibers used are soft twist silk and silk sewing thread. These threads combine with pearl purl, check purl, Japanese twist, Grecian twist, passing thread, and Japanese golds to create the butterfly, blossoms and leaves. The stitches include vertical, radiating, horizontal, voided, and diagonal satin; long and short over padding and split stitch; normal and pattern couching. Students will also learn how to transfer their own patterns and twist flat silk. The focus of the class will be on couching, filling areas with purls, and blending long and short over padding.

Maharajah’s Elephant

Teacher: Mary Long

This glitzy elephant is a Maharajah’s fantasy creature. Perhaps it is a jeweled decoration in a wonderful palace. It could be a toy for the Maharajah’s son and heir. Or maybe a Maharajah really can have a brightly colored elephant with gold feet and tusks! Let your imagination loose when choosing your colors and threads. The decorative border is optional.

Although the primary goal of this project is to teach you the technique of canvas appliqué by attaching the ear to the elephant, you may complete the project by stitching the ear directly on the canvas ground fabric.

Stitches used include tent, rice, eyelet, swirl, alternating Scotch, mosaic, Rhodes, satin, and brick as well as several cross stitches including double, upright and Smyrnas. The background is a bargello pattern.
