The Great Canadian Healthcare Debate offers health leaders a unique opportunity to debate and pass policy resolutions that reflect the current Canadian health system context and address the most pressing issues facing the healthcare system and health leaders today. Our challenge to you This year, NHLC decided to take a deeper dive in the top motions adopted for the last three years. The 2018 debate will be an opportunity to update on our progress and to further advance the past motion themes: mental health, Indigenous health and seniors health. Collectively, we will determine the most pressing next steps within these key policy areas. A lively debate will provide an opportunity to contribute to the discussion and provide advice on the path forward. We are calling on Canadian health leaders - from emerging to seasoned - to propose compelling and potentially controversial policy resolutions aimed at making an important impact on the health system. Together, we will prioritize those with the most power and impact that move forward. To develop your motions, our key question to you is what are the most pressing issues that must be addressed in either mental health, Indigenous health or seniors’ health? Any other key policy priority - the Opioid Crisis and response, national pharmacare, a national dementia strategy - can be used to submit your motion, as long as it links to either mental health, Indigenous health or seniors health. Submitting motions Please submit your motion(s) by Wednesday, April 18, 2018 to [email protected]. The motion form is attached and is also available here. Selection of motions to be debated All motions will be reviewed by the Great Canadian Healthcare Debate Policy Resolution Committee, chaired by Wendy Nicklin, CHE, FACHE (see list of Committee members below). Motions will be reviewed, based on a scan of the current policy environment, to ensure they are a priority for discussion, debate and resolution at NHLC. To be considered for inclusion, the motion should: • be of significance at the national level; or have the potential to create transformation of service delivery at the provincial or national level; • have the potential to reveal new insights or to create positive policy change; • have a broad impact on the population, healthcare delivery organizations and/or system performance; • have the potential to generate public/media interest and debate; and • be actionable with the potential to create concrete outcomes in the first year and in the long-term (e.g., opportunities for HealthCareCAN and CCHL to move the agenda forward).
