Family Business Magazine’s conferences have transformed the
family business conference landscape, engaging multi-generational
family company members in a confidential, ‘safe harbor’
environment, and positioning sponsors as thought leaders to this
audience for a modest investment, and strong return.
Family Business Magazine’s conferences cover issues of family
company succession, generational transition, and family dynamics;
operating family company wealth management; and the governance of
privately-owned companies.
SponsorshipOur conference model is unique and proven: Conference
speakers come solely from family-owned companies or are serving
board members, owners and executives of family-owned and
privately-owned companies. Sponsor executives are engaged, where
appropriate (and depending on sponsorship level) as session
moderators or facilitators, serving as stewards of the
conversation. No direct selling during our events is allowed.
• Sponsorship slots for Family Business’ conferences are
limited, and offered on a first-come, first-served basis, with
first right of refusal on renewals
• Sponsors may provide marketing materials for inclusion in the
registration bag and on tabletop displays.
• All sponsors have access to special registration discount
codes to offer to their top clients and prospects.

The Transitions East and West conferences feature more top-notch
family speakers than any other conference, and offer sponsors an
opportunity to meet and network with important multi-generational
family company members.
The US Transitions conferences are held twice a year, in the
Spring (East Coast) and the Fall (West Coast). Each conference is
built on the direct feedback of prior conference attendees, and
features new topics and new speakers vetted and approved by the
Family Business Magazine conference advisory board. Attendance at
the conference is limited to 250-280 owners, shareholders, family
members, in-laws and non-family executives of 75-80 family
businesses/enterprises.
TRANSITIONS EAST and WEST
Each conference features:• Speakers from family companies: Our
focus is on
speakers from family enterprises, sharing real-life problems and
solutions.
• Intimate, open environment: Limited attendance, and a private
“safe harbor” environment in which to openly share challenges and
opportunities with other families.
• Collaborative discussions: Opportunities to work through
family issues via guided discussions.
• No-Sell Environment: Conference sponsors understand and commit
to participating as thought leaders and experts, and are restricted
from actively selling their products and services.
• Special content and sessions for next-generation and
married-in family members
• Family Networking: Hosted networking, assigned seating,
opening reception, meals, breaks and workshops are all designed to
allow attendees to meet many family enterprise attendees.
• Family focus: Produced by family-owned Family Business
Magazine, we use family-owned or controlled hotels, transportation
services, restaurants and service providers whenever possible. We
believe in, and invest in, America’s family businesses
Family-owned companies and family-controlled enterprises of all
types and sizes attend Transitions. They all share one key
characteristic: They are multi-generational (or intend to be
multi-generational) and want to perpetuate the business and the
family.
The typical family company brings three attendees (a number of
families bring between 4 and 10 family members). Approximately 15%
of attendees are next-generation (under age 30), and 10% are
married-in to the family business.
Approximately 45% of companies have attended more than one
Transitions conference, often bringing additional family members to
each event.
Transitions Conference Demographics
Would you recommend that other family members attend
Transitions? Yes: 100%

“This is one of the best conferences I’ve ever attended. The
diversity of topics, the openness and candidness of the attendees,
the structure. All of it was awesome.”
“The best ever! Messages were clear, consistent and well
organized. People shared openly whether on stage or otherwise.”
“This was a great conference—the person-to person idea exchanges
were vibrant.”
“I always learn something new and meet new people experiencing
the same things I am. I’ve never had a support network like this
one.”
“I was amazed at how open everyone was about sharing their
stories. I got several ideas on dealing with the issues facing our
family and our business. Very beneficial.”
“Loved having access to dynamic family businesses in a helpful
environment. The speakers were so giving and open--a true
gift!”
“Very well done, with friendly people. The conference was set up
to be very easy to talk to others and the crowd was really
good.”
“Best seminar I have attended. Focused on family rather than
sponsors.”
“Good cross section of different family companies dealing with a
variety of relatable issues. Got a lot of very valuable information
throughout the two days.”
“Such an open environment--eye opening would be an
understatement. I look forward to coming back next year and
bringing more family with me.”
“Excellent conference, superbly implemented and presented.”
“Excellent. I appreciated all the takeaways from the conference
and enjoyed meeting and talking with others. I liked the
positive/negative shared experiences from the family
businesses.”
“Transitions is just a great place to learn about family
business issues.”

inspirational and comforting to know obstacles can be
overcome.”

Successfully launched in 2017, Transitions Canada serves the
needs of our Canadian audience, and the US’ largest trading
partner, as well as US family businesses.
Transitions Canada is unique among Canadian family business
forums: all of our speakers are business family members sharing
their stories and experiences in a confidential, “no-sell”
environment. This allows for deep conversation and learning for
attending family businesses.
Attendance at this conference is strictly limited to owners,
shareholders, family members, in-laws and executives of 75 family
businesses/enterprises. The conference is designed to facilitate
conversation on important family issues among generations. There is
special programming for family business members aged 15-29, and for
those who have married-in to the family business.
TRANSITIONS CANADASeptember 26-28, 2018 • Waterside Inn,
Mississauga, ON
Transitions Canada features:• Plenty of time and forums to
network with other families.
• Shared pre-conference survey results.
• Our confidential and no sell environment.
• A pre-conference “Family Business Basics” session for first
timers.

• FAMILY FOCUS: Transitions is brought to you by Family Business
Magazine, a third-generation family owned company, and Next Gen
Anesti Principal John Neretlis, a G2 in his family business and a
G2 married-in of his wife’s family business.

THE PRIVATE COMPANY GOVERNANCE SUMMIT 2018
May 16-18, 2018 • Westin City Center, Washington, DC
Would you recommend that other private company
owners and directors attend this conference?
Yes: 100%
Source: PCGS attendee conference evaluations.
The sixth annual Private Company Governance Summit (PCGS) serves
the governance information needs of owners, shareholders, directors
and advisory board members of closely-held, family–owned and
private equity owned private companies. The conference is produced
by Private Company Director, Directors & Boards and Family
Business Magazine.
Serving Middle Market Private CompaniesPCGS attendees represent
middle market privately-owned companies, ranging in size from $50
million to well over $3 billion in annual revenues. Private Company
Director was launched (in print and online) in 2013 to serve the
governance needs of this important and hard-to-reach
demographic.
According to Deloitte LLP, 75% of the US companies in the middle
market are privately-held. Of the privately-held companies, 36% are
family-owned, 28% closely-held (non-family) and 36% are
private-equity or VC-backed, or had some other ownership
structure.
Middle market companies are leading job growth, employing more
than 50 million people and making a contribution of nearly $6.2
trillion to the U.S. economy. (Source: Middle Market Power Index
from American Express and Dun & Bradstreet.)
The United States is home to 55,700 middle market companies and
generates the highest amount of economic output among such
companies in major global markets. (Source: HSBC and Oxford
Economics.)
Each PCGS conference features:• Speakers who are serving
directors or
private company owners/shareholders, sharing practical,
real-world experiences
• Top flight keynote addresses
• Collaborative discussion sessions
• Breakouts covering key governance topics
• Special content for private companies just beginning to
develop formal governance
• Exceptional networking opportunities
The Private Boards of the Year Awards Dinner is a key feature of
the Private Company Governance Summit.
The Private Boards of the Year are selected through nominations,
and then researched and vetted by the editorial team of Private
Company Director and Directors & Boards magazines. Final
selections and honorable mentions are made by a panel of
independent judges.
