As of April 1, 2018, clean and dry corrugated cardboard will not be accepted in the landfill. (Lincoln Municipal Code 8.32.040). Corrugated cardboard is three layers of paper with the middle layer corrugated or rippled.
All Lincoln and Lancaster County residents and businesses that generate corrugated cardboard and have their garbage collected and delivered to the landfill will be affected by this ban. You have four options for handling corrugated cardboard boxes that are clean and dry:1. Corrugated cardboard boxes can be reused.2. You can use a convenient recycling collection service for a small fee. Ask a
recycling collector if they provide a one-time collection of corrugated cardboard. 3. Residents can take corrugated cardboard to a public recycling drop-off site for no
fee (for household use only).4. Businesses can self-haul to a recycling processor or contract with a recycling collector.
Every garbage collector in Lincoln offers recycling services to both residential and commercial customers. Collection costs vary, so make sure to contact more than one company. A listing of local collectors and processors is available on the City website, recycle.lincoln.ne.gov.
Residents, businesses and landlords will not be ticketed by the City for failure to

Public Recycling Drop-off Sites(For household residents only)Recyclables will need to be sorted if taken to a public drop-off site. Locations and accepted materials can be found on the back page of this guide.
Contractors and businesses need to subscribe to a recycling collection service or self-haul recyclables to local processors. Visit recycle.lincoln.ne.gov for a list of collectors and processors.
Curbside RecyclingContact your garbage service or a recycling collector to subscribe to curbside collection of recyclables. It’s easy, convenient and low cost. Recyclables are mixed together in one container, and you simply roll it out to the curb on your recycling collection day. The weekly cost for this collection service is less than a cup of coffee at a local coffee shop. For a list of garbage and recycling collectors go to recycle.lincoln.ne.gov

TelevisionsLow commodities prices are making it difficult for electronics recyclers to get rid of toxic materials from obsolete television sets. As a result, companies that used to recycle televisions for free are now charging customers to haul them away. This can be inconvenient for residents wanting to clear space or upgrade to a newer television set, but it is a significant step toward a cleaner environment.
Many electronic devices contain toxic substances such as lead, mercury, beryllium and cadmium. Recycling those materials is difficult and costly even when commodities prices are high. Legacy TVs with bulky and heavy cathode ray tubes (CRTs) contain large glass tubes that have an average of 6 lbs. of lead each. These could be melted down
to make new CRTs. As old CRT sets are becoming obsolete and replaced with LED or plasma televisions, which do not contain lead, the demand for such commodities has been greatly decreased, and they have become costly to recycle. It is estimated that in 2015, Americans had around 5 billion
pounds worth of CRT TVs in their homes, which would amount to 30 billion pounds of lead that could potentially be placed in landfills in the coming years*. Although fees with recycling a television set may seem like an unnecessarily expense, it is still a small price to pay to keep those materials out of the landfill and out of the environment.*According to a survey from the Electronics RecyclingCoordination Clearinghouse (ERCC), a pro-recycling nonprofitorganization.

Everyday household products such as pesticides, cleaners and automotive fluids can cause health problems, contaminate the environment and injure sanitation workers when put in the trash.
Pesticides are poisonous and dangerous! Do you really need them? Follow these safe, chemical-free integrated pest management (IPM) steps at home:1. Identify the kinds of pests you have. Sticky traps work well. 2. Once you know the pest, take steps to eliminate sources of food, water and
shelter that they need to survive. Follow these IPM tips at home: a. Keep living areas clean and uncluttered. b. Keep food in tightly sealed containers. c. Keep trash in a closed container. d. Fix plumbing and water leaks. e. Seal all entry points, such as gaps and holes in walls and other surfaces using
caulk, steel wool or other pest-proof materials. 3. Use traps and baits, or contact Lancaster County Extension at 402-441-7180 for
more info.

More than 50 percent of the waste sent to the landfill in garbage trucks comes from businesses and institutions. To achieve the City’s goal of reducing the annual per capita disposal rate by 30 percent by 2040, the private sector’s ability to reduce waste and recycle is extremely important.
Sometimes it’s tough for businesses to know where to start with recycling. They often can have difficulty with tight storage space, collection costs, employee training or sorting.
The Solid Waste Management Division has developed information on business recycling best management practices and sector specific fact sheets that address those challenges and provide simple steps to building a successful recycling program. Visit recycle.lincoln.ne.gov for more information on commercial recycling.
The Solid Waste Management Division also offers on-site consultation and assistance to businesses and institutions that includes:• Personalized waste management
system evaluation• Assessment of barriers to recycling
and/or composting• Development of an action plan that
fits the needs of an organization and its customers
• Program implementation assistance
• Education and training for staff, customers or renters
The City’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Assistance Program (WRRAP) provides rebates to organizations for 50 percent (not to exceed $750) of your recycling and/or composting start-up and service
Commercial waste reduction and recycling On-line Resources AvailableBusinesses and organizations interested in increasing their waste reduction and recycling can access resources on-line to help them gain a better understanding of opportunities available to them to be successful. Recycle Lincoln Leadership Recognition Program
Construction and Demolition Waste RecyclingLincoln is a growing community. As a result, significant amounts of construction and demolition waste have the potential to be diverted from the landfill. Lincoln Public Schools developed new construction waste management guidelines that aim to divert 75 percent of construction waste materials from their building projects. LPS has diverted over 4,000 tons of material from
the landfill, including wood, metal, ceiling tiles, cardboard and concrete and generated $60,000 in revenue since developing the new construction waste management guidelines three years ago.
Visit recycle.lincoln.ne.gov for more information on construction waste management.
For those businesses that already recycle, the Recycle Lincoln Leadership Recognition Program provides an opportunity for businesses to network and achieve citywide recognition for their contributions to sustainability. Businesses and organizations can achieve four levels of recognition, based on the amount of materials recycled or composted.
Businesses will be recognized in several ways:• Window clings and certificates for display at place-of-
business.• Organizational logo and website link posted on the City of
Lincoln website.• Annual print advertisements in a local publication.• Promotion on City social media sites.
