Ensure that your wedding gowncan last through the ages
• Bring in your gown as soon as possible. Your best chance of
returning your dress to new-like condition, is to get it cleaned
quickly before stains have time to set in to the fabric.
• Preserve your gown to its original intergrity: The cleaning
process is all nautral, no chemicals used! Once the dress is clean,
it will be carefully wrapped with white, acid-free tissue paper to
prevent wrinkles and placed in a viewing box.
• Storing your gowns: Store in a cool, dry location. Basements
and attics are not good choices because basement dampness can cause
mildew and attic heat could promote yellowing of the fabric
THE CHOICE IS YOURS!We have tuxedo lines by top designers such

Gene and WandaLitzau of Glencoehave been happi-ly married for 61
years.
At ages 84 and 81 re-spectively, the Litzaushave three children,
eightliving grandchildren and“have enough stories towrite a book,”
said WandaLitzau.
Gene Litzau, who grewup in Glencoe in a familyof 10 kids, and
WandaLitzau, who grew up on afarm by Watkins in a fami-ly of 11
kids, went on theirfirst date in 1955.
The couple met throughtheir older siblings, be-cause Gene’s
older brother,John, married Wanda’solder sister, Jeanette,
in1952.
“Gene kept comingaround wanting to give mea ride on the ferris
wheelor in his convertible and Ireally didn’t want to be-cause I
was more interest-ed in the other brother,”laughed Wanda. “But
hedidn’t give up! And finallyI said, ‘Well, I guess Ishould go on a
date withthe poor guy.’ So I did. Forour first date we went toCold
Spring to a ballroomfor a dance. Then we had acouple more dates and
onthe third date, my mothersaid, ‘Now, Wanda. Whatdo you think of
that Litzauboy?’ And I said, ‘Well,Mother, I’m going tomarry him.
He’s just whatI’m looking for in a hus-band.’ My mother droppedher
dish towel. I was bare-ly 19.”
Gene asked her to marryhim nine months after theystarted dating,
because hewas planning to volunteerfor the war and he wanted
to be engaged before heleft for training.
Wanda, however, had adifferent plan. “I said, ‘IfI’m going to
put an en-gagement ring on my fin-ger, I’m going to put awedding
band on my fin-ger, too! Because whenyou get done with yourbasic
(training), Gene, I’mcoming with you.’ Sothat’s what we did.”
The couple got marriedon Aug. 11, 1956, and, trueto her word,
once Genefinished with his basictraining, Wanda left Min-nesota to
be close to herhusband.
They welcomed theirdaughter, Lynn, in 1958,while Gene was
stationedin California. After he washonorable discharged in1958,
Gene and Wandamade their home in Glen-coe where they welcomedtheir
second child, a boy,Eugene Jr. “Butch”, and,12 years later, their
thirdchild, Bill.
It was always Wanda’sdream to have 12 childrenand, although they
nevergot their 12, she and Genefrequently opened up theirhome to
children andteenagers who neededsomewhere to stay.
Some children includeGene’s younger, 9-year oldbrother David
(Gene’smother died when many ofher children were still veryyoung),
who lived withthem for 10 years, a 16-year-old boy named Ethan,a
friend of their son’s, wholived with the Litzaus untilhe turned 18,
and a littleneighbor girl who oftenneeded somewhere to stayafter
her mother passedaway.
Married couple of 61 years shares their story and secrets to
marital success
Gene and Wanda Litzau’s wedding photo; Gene is onthe left
instead of on the traditional right, because hehad broken his arm
in a car accident not long beforethe wedding and they decided to
hide it behindWanda’s waist.
“We’ve helped raise somany children throughthese 60 years,”
saidWanda.
Both Gene and Wandahave lived very full, busylives with their
family herein Glencoe.
Gene worked at Sam’sTire, managed Glencoe Co-Op for 23 years,
and afterretirement, delivered autoparts for Auto Value for
12years.
Wanda, on the otherhand, worked in the schoolsystem in Glencoe
as a sub-stitute teacher and as acook before leaving tomanage the
bakery at SuperValue in town for 10 years. She also worked for
Mealson Wheels, organized con-gregate senior dining inGlencoe for
another 10years, taught SundaySchool at Church of Peacein Glencoe
for 50 years andcontinues to volunteer therewith Gene today.
As for advice Wanda andGene have for couples, keeping God and
religionin the picture and going tochurch are all important.
Wanda urges marriedcouples to go to church
together (“Italicize andunderline it; I mean it!” shesaid.)
She also adds to never goto bed angry, never beafraid to say
‘I’m sorry’and to be compassionate.“Everyone in this wholeworld
should be more com-passionate towards peo-ple,” said Wanda.
Gene and Wanda are ex-cited to share that they willbe in a
wedding, in justfour months’ time. Theyhave been asked to be
thering bearer and flower girlfor Jamie Rainwater’s andJoshua
Schroeder’s wed-ding in Hutchinson. Whatstarted as a joke onWanda’s
end became aheartfelt request from thecouple, after Wanda ad-vised
them that they should“just get married, for good-ness sake!”
Gene will be wearing ablack button-up shirt, blackpants and a
turquoise tieand Wanda is still trying tofind a turquoise dress
towear for the big day.
“It’s been a fun ride,”says Wanda about theirmarriage. “I
wouldn’t wantto change a thing.”

Every couple wants to make theirwedding day unique and
personal.Peter Goettl of PJ’s How 2 Spiritshas just the way
(actually a few ways) tohelp couples do that just that.
PJ’s is specialty shop in Glencoe thatsells wine- and
beer-making kits and offersclasses and all the supplies needed to
makethem.
Onething that people who make theirown can do is create their
own label, andGoettl said that is an option for
soon-to-benewlyweds.
“Anyone who is good with a computercan come up with a label,”
said Goettl.
Goettl said one couple designed a labelwith a tree and a saying
about their “rootsin love.” The unique label also had theirnames
and wedding date on it.
Once the artwork is designed, it can beput on labels that Goettl
has available atPJ’s.
There is a caveat to the personal wine —couples either need to
buy a kit and make
it themselves, or buy a kit and have Goettlmake it for them. And
they have to pay forthe kit before Goettl can make the wine.
“I don’t have a liquor license, so I can’tsell wine to them
directly,” Goettl ex-plained.
One kit makes 30 bottles of wine, andGoettl estimates that there
at least 100 dif-ferent varieties that can be made. He hassamples
for those who wish to taste thembefore purchasing a kit.
Most wines take at least six weeks to make, and Goettl said he
needs plenty of
lead time if he’s going to be the one mak-ing the wine.
“It could be even longer if we have a lotof them to do,” said
Goettl.
Couples should also make note that notall wedding reception
venues will allowfamilies to bring their own wine. Manyhave
designated liquor distributors whomust be used for events.
In that case, Goettl said, couples can ei-ther give the wine as
gifts to their weddingparty and others, or use at a groom’s din-ner
or another related event.
Personalized labels, wine glasses help make weddings
memorable
Goettl also suggested that couples put afew bottles of their
personal wine away forspecial occasions, such as anniversaries.
Speaking of wedding parties, Goettl saida fun activity may be to
have a weddingparty take a wine-making class togetherand make their
own wine.
“That’s a memory that will last a life-time, too,” said Goettl.
“There is a sayingthat a couple that makes wine together willstay
together longer.”
Another service offered at PJ’s is custom,hand-painted wine
glasses. He has exam-ples of some of the artwork at the shop.
PJ’s How 2 Spirits is located at 712 E10th St. in Glencoe. The
phone number is320-864-8466, and its website
iswww.pjshow2spirits.com. It can also befound on Facebook.

After attending a barn wed-ding in 2015, Sheila andThomas Hagel
of Browntonthought, “we could do this,”and the planning for
TheRustic Oaks Barn began.
The Hagels had built ahouse on Sheila Hagel’s fam-ily farm north
of Brownton. They say it is a typical farm, with cows, chickens,
pigs, goats, donkeys and one pony. They rent out the cropland.
Sheila Hagel is a McLeodWest High School graduate;Thomas Hagel
grew up inNew Brighton. They havefour children, William,
14,Matthew, 12, Elizabeth, 11,and Jonathan, 10, who helpout on the
farm.
The Hagels visited a num-ber of similar venues as theywere
planning their new ven-ture to see what they did anddidn’t like.
The biggest take-away: bathrooms. The RusticOak Barn features
indoor, cli-mate-controlled bathrooms, something the Hagels saidmany
venues they visited did-n’t have.
The barn is “nicely isolat-ed” away from major roads, but easily
accessible onpaved county roads. There isno noisy traffic going by
thebarn or neighbors to com-
plain about the noise. The wooded property over-
looks the stunning rollingcountryside and Mary Lake, with two
beautiful oak treesthat frame the nuptial area. The beautiful
gardens andpastures are surrounded by awhite, three-rail fence.
Therealso is a large children’s playarea to keep little ones
enter-tained.
A loft in the barn providesan area where the ceremonycould be
moved if the weath-er doesn’t cooperate. The loftcould also be
ideal for a so-cial hour or dance. The mainarea barn can
comfortablyseat 350 for dinner.
Thomas Hagel has beenmaking the rustic tables. They also have
Chiavarichairs, table decor and winebarrels available for
decorat-ing.
The venue also features agroom’s room and bridalsuite with
private restroom;both are heated and air condi-tioned.
There is a caterer’s kitchen,a buffet and separate bar area.
The Hagels have been busyattending bridal shows andare getting
bookings for 2018and 2019.
They still have space avail-able in 2018.

Denny and Karen(Lehmann) Vinar,formerly of Brown-ton, got
married in 2015 andhave released a family mem-oir titled “How Did
You FindMe … After All TheseYears?” which tells the storyof their
high school relation-ship, how they reconnected50 years later, and
how theirexperience and marriage hasblessed their families
today.
The couple dated in juniorand senior high and briefly incollege
for six months beforeeventually going their sepa-rate ways. Their
journey toreconnecting again beganwhen Dennis Vinar attended
adinner party on Oct., 252014.
At the dinner party, a friendof the hostess stood up andasked if
everyone would liketo play a game. Everyoneagreed and she posed
thisquestion: “If your primaryphysician gave you 60 daysto live,
who would be oneperson you would want totake to Starbucks or take
outto dinner?”
Many people in the roomlisted celebrities or politiciansas
candidates. Denny Vinar,on the other hand, thought ofhis high
school sweetheartand said, without hesitation,“Karen Lehmann.”
In a stroke of luck, DennyVinar found her on LinkedIn.“I just
smacked my hands andsaid, ‘That’s my lady,’” saidVinar.
He then called her businessphone number in Everett,Washington.
She did not an-swer the phone, but he left amessage with her
assistant:“Just tell her Denny called,an old friend of about
50years from Eden Prairie, Min-nesota.”
“She called me back in 10minutes,” said Vinar.
After their first phone call, the couple began regularlytalking
on the phone and tex-ting (“I call it our electroniccourtship,”
said Karen Vinar)and eventually the conversa-tion led to
marriage.
“‘She said, ‘Would youever ask me to marry you?’”said Vinar. “I
said, ‘No,never. I’ll never ask you tomarry me.’” He had
previous-ly proposed twice, once inhigh school when she was 15and
again when she was ajunior in college.
“[When Karen asked why]I said, ‘Well, Karen askingyou to marry
me is like base-ball — three strikes andyou’re out.
“She said, ‘Well, I have adifferent take on that. It’s thethird
time’s the charm.’”
Originally the plan was tomarry in April 2015 but theyended up
getting married inWashington on Jan. 22, 2015,instead, just two
days aftermeeting each other in personagain.
Two years later, both re-tired and relocated to North-field,
where they began towrite their book.
The couple credits the Rev.Duane Everson, a retiredELCA pastor
and goodfriend, for continuously en-couraging them to actuallywrite
down their story. “If itweren’t for him, we’d proba-bly still be
thinking about it.He pushed us until we did fi-nally write a book,”
saidKaren Vinar.
Published and editedthrough Mill City Press,“How Did You Find Me
…After All These Years?” hasfour authors and follows achronological
order, startingin junior high in Browntonand ending in the present
day.
Karen Vinar believes thattheir story brings a small-town point
of interest forreaders who also grew up insmall midwestern towns
inthe 1950s.
The book is more than justa love story set in a smallmidwestern
town, however. Italso introduces long lost fam-ily into the picture
— Dennyand Karen Vinar’s daughter,Jean Voxland, who was bornand
adopted by loving par-ents when they were in highschool.
“It was sometime after wehad gotten married thatDenny said,
“Have you everthought about looking for ourdaughter?’ And I said
no,”said Karen Vinar. “She’s 50-some years old. It wouldn’tbe fair
to locate her and getinvolved in her life at thistime. But he
didn’t give up.After many times mentioningit, he finally said, ‘I
foundyou now my life would becomplete if we could find
ourdaughter.’
“So that’s when I said,‘OK, we’ll contact LutheranSocial
Services.’”
The Vinars reconnectedwith their daughter in May2016.
Karen Vinar said that intheir book, Jean Voxlandwrites a couple
chapters fromher point of view and her ex-periences as an adopted
child.Near the end of the book,Jean’s husband, Andrew, alsowrites a
couple chapters fromhis own perspective.
“So it’s not just a singlelove story. It’s actually a dou-ble
love story about a familyreunited,” said Karen Vinar.
The Vinars have been busywith book signings and bookevents since
the family mem-oir was published at the endof November 2017.
They are excited to an-nounce that they will be com-ing to the
Brownton PublicLibrary at noon and the Glen-coe Public Library at 3
p.m.on Feb. 15 to present theirbook and sign book copies.
“How Did You Find Me …After All These Years?” canbe found on
Amazon and inselect Barnes & Noble stores(including the one in
the Mallof America). Content Book-store in Northfield also has
it,among other small book-stores.
