    02 | 2018 JBI INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL REPORT

We are pleased and excited to share the leadership of JBI, the world’s largest library of Jewish interest for individuals who are blind and visually impaired. We follow wonderful and inspiring leaders of this unique organization. All our services have always been FREE—and we are determined that they always will be. Led by Dr. Ellen Isler and her devoted sta and wonderful volunteers, JBI helps make the world a better place. We are privileged to help in that work.

None of JBI’s work would be possible without your continued generous support and understanding. By helping to provide free Braille, Large Print and Audio materials, you enable blind and visually impaired men, women, and children to play vibrant roles in their communities.

Because of you, children who are blind or visually impaired are studying alongside their peers, becoming Bar/Bat Mitzvah and participating in communal life. Adults access the written word for pleasure, information, and religious observance. Older men and women who unexpectedly nd themselves forced to adjust to severe vision loss are reconnecting to the world of reading, Jewish culture, and social and communal activities. Whatever materials they request from JBI are delivered right to their doorsteps.

Outreach remains one of our most pressing concerns. We want everyone who needs us to know of and to benet from JBI’s services. e JBI library is always expanding and adapting to meet our patrons’ needs.

rough your generosity, you are ensuring that JBI will continue to be there for all who call upon us. On behalf of JBI’s Board of Trustees, its sta, and all those whose lives are enriched by JBI’s free services, we thank you for your support and for your caring.

JBI MISSION STATEMENTJBI International, founded in 1931 as The Jewish Braille Institute, seeks to empower blind, visually impaired and reading disabled individuals to participate fully in educational, cultural and communal life by providing free access to works of Jewish and general interest through its Braille, Large Print and Audio Libraries. Our global programs in many languages serve people of all ages and backgrounds.

    THE JBI LIBRARY

materials – in accessible formats in English, Russian,Yiddish, Spanish, Hebrew, Hungarian, Romanian and Polish. We serve readers on six continents.

JEWISH EDUCATION & JEWISH CONTINUITYJBI enables blind, visually impaired and reading disabled children to obtain a Jewish education alongside their peers by providing customized educational materials in Braille, Large Print and Audio. The JBI Library also helps adults blind from birth as well as those who have become visually impaired later in life to savor the joys of reading and lifelong learning.

ISRAEL PROGRAMIn 1983, JBI established and has since continued to support the premier Low Vision Clinic in Israel, located at the Sourasky Medical Center in Tel Aviv. The Clinic seeks to maximize the residual vision of those with severe impairment, whether it be the result of congenital disease, aging or injury.

    HIGHLIGHTS OF 2018

    Judy E. Tenney

Through our annual Haggadah Outreach Campaign, we provided 1,578 free Large Print and Braille Haggadot (in various languages and for different denominations) to visually impaired people of all ages who would otherwise have been unable to participate in a seder.

JBI produced Braille, Audio, or Large Print educational materials for every blind and visually impaired student who turned to us. These included Bar and Bat Mitzvah preparation and anything else related to participation in Jewish life and learning. Last year, as always, the variety of requests was extremely wide-ranging. Braille requests included: a few chapters of a Hebrew grammar book for a 14-year-old; Havdalah blessings for a college student so that he could participate in his sister’s Bat Mitzvah; and a 66 page Braille Hebrew book for a 10 year old. JBI’s staff worked one-on-one with parents and educators to make sure that each book was ready for a child when he or she needed it.

We circulated--free of charge--17,100 Talking Books, 18,900 periodicals and cultural programs, and 4,060 Braille, Large Print and Audio liturgical and lifecycle publications.

JBI converted 360 analog Talking Book titles from its archive to digital format.

JBI completed the transcription and production of a Braille edition of the Reform movement’s new High Holy Day prayer book, Mishkan HaNefesh, in time for Rosh Hashanah.
