Report of Board of Elders Elder Julian Sampang, Jr. The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning. Lamentations 3:22-23 NLT

God’s faithful Love indeed never ends. Apart from Him we are nothing. All Glory to God for the wisdom and opportunity for the Board of Elders to serve in this church!

In June 2017 Elder Tim Ilagan ended his term after serving for 5 years. We are grateful for his hard work, remarkable contributions and dedication in serving God as Board member through this church; we wish him sustenance of good health and God’s blessings in his future endeavors. We welcome Elder Edwind Uy who replaced him in the interim to cover his remaining year as an Elder and help during transition.

In the same month, Pastor Nelson Annan retired as Senior Pastor after serving for almost 4 years at RLAC and overall 48 years in ministry. We are grateful for Pastor Nelson and Jan for their hard work and significant contributions to our church. The Elders and the pastoral staff collaborated during the summer and in the interim to sustain the church operations and ensure a smooth transition. We welcome Pastor Daniel and Sara-Lynn as our new Lead Pastor. They started their ministry at RLAC on September 1st, 2018 and were officially installed September 8th, 2018.

In July 2017 Pastor Arnold returned as part-time staff after almost a year of medical leave following his successful liver transplant. By God’s grace he has fully recovered and now serving full time since November 2018. Praise God for being our ultimate Healer.

The Board of Elders in 2018 met for at least 12 times to review and make decisions on church related matters. Highlights of initiatives and resolutions made in 2018 are as follows;

1. Reviewed and approved the 2019 financial budget forecast. 2. Initiated, reviewed and approved the Building and Rental in May 2017. The Policy provided

guidance on how to maintain RLAC facility and schedule of fees for external usage. 3. Collaborated with the Search Committee members and the District Coach with God’s guidance

to finally identify our new Lead Pastor in 2Q18. Thanks to the efforts and many hours of the Search Team spearheaded by Ollie Sicat with members who were composed of the following; Tim Ilagan, Rey Balatbat, Ollie Sicat, Jun Dionisio, Arielle Albania, Jay Manalo, Edwind Uy and Rowena Gonzales.

4. Approved and supported our NextGen short term mission and young adults mission conference attendance at Montreal and St Louis (US), respectively. Their attendance was considered life transforming for all of them.

5. In January 2017 the Building Mortgage beginning balance was $1,028K. Praise God at the end of the year 2018 the mortgage was reduced to $892K and met our goal of less than $1M set in 1Q15.

6. In partnership with the International Action Ministries supported provision of Training space and billeting of 7 young Nipawin Bible School intern missionaries. These 7 young adults eventually went to the Philippines for a 3-week short-term mission in July 2018. Cultural learnings from Host Filipinos from RLAC were very useful for them to assimilate quickly to the culture at the field.

In addition to above the Elders have been involved in the following ministry activities in 2018, all for God’s Glory! 1. Prayed and ministered to families and showed encouragement and compassion brought about

various circumstances. 2. Led bible studies that generated transformation to team members following the work of the Holy

Spirit. 3. Involvement in the worship Team and Small group Ministry Leadership and development as

well. 4. Supported church wide Volunteers’ Appreciation Brunch held last June 2018. 5. Supported Facilities/Building maintenance and improvements in collaboration with Bro. Dan

Vecino. 6. Involvement in the Senior Pastor Search Committee and helped design the selection process,

criteria and evaluation process. 7. Hosted Luncheon for Filipino Alliance Pastors attending the National C&MA General

Assembly.

In the midst of our hectic schedule, the Lord has indeed stretched our time to accomplish His purpose. He has been the source of our strength and wisdom in serving Him through this ministry. We are blessed and privileged during our term to be able to work with our Pastors and committed volunteers who have demonstrated dedication and passion in accomplishing significant things for the furtherance of God’s kingdom. Thank you for the River of Life Alliance Church, for your trust, love, support and prayers for the Elders.

To our Pastoral team – Daniel Kang, Arnold Magtulis, Fe Vecino, James Kricken; thank you for your love for this church and tireless efforts in serving the Lord – special mention to Pastors Jack Gonzales and Shawn Kelly for always being ready to help. We also thank the spouses and children of our pastors for your partnership and releasing them to serve the body.

To our committed RLAC Volunteers – we are grateful for your dedication, hard work, and support to accomplish 2018 programs, events, and goals in your respective ministry areas. Thanks very much dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ! Finally, we are thankful to our loving spouses and children for their encouragement, unselfish love and prayers. Again, to God be the glory for all the work accomplishment in 2018!

Report of our Retired Senior Pastor !Rev. Nelson Annan January to June 2018

In January Pastor Arnold and Daisy began to attend worship services at River of Life. We praise God for Pastor Arnold’s recovery from major surgery and a stroke. As his strength increased, Pastor Arnold gradually returned to part time ministry with us during these six months, with much help from Daisy.

In February Daniel Komori ministered to our NextGen and parents on the topic of sexual and gender issues, so prominent in our culture. Christians must be clear in our thinking, practices and communication in these sensitive cultural areas.

We also began our first Alpha Course and while we had a surplus of volunteers, guests who attended were few with only 3 or 4 completing the course. Thanks to all who served in this ministry.

Under the strong leadership of Rowena Gonzales, our Missions Committee provided two documents to help us “do short term missions well.” They also led the way in encouraging and preparing our young people to be involved in both a summer outreach in Montreal and our young adults in a Missions Conference in December.

Our staff accepted an invitation from the Evergreen Seniors Residence in SW Calgary to conduct monthly services. We did this in March, April and May.

Many of our people served as volunteers in the National General Assembly of the C&MA held at First Alliance in June. Several of us attended as delegates while others attended some general meetings.

Jan and I are very grateful to God for our four years of ministry at RLAC. It was a joy to serve with a united staff, elder’s board and congregation: as we finalized the purchase and ownership of our church building and as we initiated many new ministries. Our personal thanks for the financial support we received to minister in Hanoi, Vietnam during the summer of 2018.

Finally, thank you for the very special celebration party at the end of September.

We love you all. You are in our hearts and in our prayers.

Report of our Lead Pastor Rev. Daniel Kang Hi River of Life, all I can say is that it has been a whirlwind year for us. In August we moved into our new home in Chaparral, and one month later on September 1st, I started as the lead pastor of River of Life. It’s always quite a unique experience entering into a brand new church culture, but I just have to say that you have welcomed our family so warmly. Here are some notable highlights from September to December.

• We kicked off our Fall Ministry season with a 6-week series in the book of Jonah. • On September 8, I was officially installed as the lead pastor or River of Life. • On November 10-11, as a church we got to witness and celebrate the baptism of 15 individuals.

Thank you Pastor James and Pastor Arnold for your strong leadership during that service. • In December, I learned that RLAC really takes their Christmas Parties to the next level. I’ve

never attended that many Christmas parties before. • Our season of Advent, and our Christmas Eve services were filled with wonder and joy. Thank

you Pastor Fe and Worship Teams for filling our services with wonderful creative forms of worship. The cardboard testimonies during our first week of Advent were incredibly powerful. I really cherish the spirit of worship in this church.

• I am happy to report that we were able to finish the year financially strong, with a surplus of $80,000. Thank you for giving generously!

In terms of what’s on the horizon for us as a church congregation; 2019 is going to be a year focused on instruction and discipleship. We kicked off the year by hosting the Soul Care conference. This was an incredible weekend of worship, healing and deliverance. During the Soul Care conference, we were introduced to a model of peer-to-peer discipleship in the form of triads. I would like to work with our small group ministries at RLAC in an endeavor to implement triads as a way of going deeper in our personal walk with Jesus.

It has been an incredible start for us in Calgary, and we are looking forward to the ways God is going to grow us up, grow us together and grow us out in our endeavor to reach the city of Calgary with the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Respectfully Submitted,

Rev. Daniel Kang

Report of our NextGen Pastor Pastor James Kricken Last year was a significant season for the NextGen Youth Ministry. I am encouraged that the ministry has undergone healthy changes and more importantly, that there has been a growing work of the Holy Spirit and lives that are being touched by Him. The largest shift that the NextGen made in 2018 was the introduction of our Friday Night program. In October, we were finally able to change the primary ministry from a Saturday service to a Friday Youth Night. This moved the youth ministry into a setting that provided more space and time for our youth to worship, fellowship, and have fun! We wanted a place where youth could go deeper with their small groups in discipleship, but also be themselves and have freedom to laugh and play games. Praise God for a successful launch in October and a steady foundation to build upon in 2019.

Another Highlight from last year was our youth retreat to Gull Lake Centre. The retreat was filled with a new energy from an increase in our younger Jr. Highs that attended. Our camp theme was ‘Fearless’ and focused on having faith and trusting in God despite the storms that may be around us. Our guest speaker, Alison Springer, rocked it (as usual) and we enjoyed games in the gymnasium that kept us warm from the blizzard outside. We also had the privilege of several intercessors driving up and joining us for our sessions. Praise God that we had 6 NextGen come forward on Sunday to dedicate their lives to Christ.

God has also been putting a greater desire in the Next Gen for missions. In July, we were so blessed be able to send a NextGen team to Montreal, on a short-term missions trip. The SOAR program is a combined effort from the Mennonite Brethren and Alliance in Quebec. While we were there, the team interacted with people from Quebec, New York, France, Switzerland, Ontario, Abbotsford, and Rockpointe Youth in Calgary. The youth were able to encounter God and learn more about him through the discipleship program, but also be engaged in street, children and youth ministries, and volunteering through a local gardening organization. This trip was incredible, and I was so encouraged to see the youth stepping out in faith in the beautiful but broken city of Montreal. There is so much more to say, so please speak to a member of the team to hear more.

An additional initiative that several of the NextGen have been involved in is the Alpha Program at Bishop’ O Byrne High School. Last year we volunteered and partnered with Richard Sampang and WIM youth ministries, along with the staff at the school, to run the weekly program. Last year we had two youth consistently attend Next Gen that were first connected through Alpha. Praise God that there have been other youth that have come to Christ and were also plugged into other churches, so it has been a kingdom initiative.

Lastly, with all of the exciting things happening with the Next Gen, what is the most encouraging is to see an emergence of the work of the Holy Spirit and growing love for Jesus in the youth and young adults. There have been a growing number of testimonies of experiencing and being filled with the Holy Spirit, alongside healings, and other manifestations. I believe that greater things are in store for the younger generation. I am excited to see what God will do as we begin looking beyond our church groups to the many youth that need Jesus.

Report of our Young Adults Ministry Hi, River of Life! Our group continues to grow and we were able to welcome a couple new attendees during our Monday YABS (Young Adults Bible Studies) this year. In April, we studied Prophetic Ministry, the purpose of prophecies, and got to experience putting it into practice during times of activation. This opened up opportunities for those attending to begin exploring their spiritual gifts like dreams and visions. In October, we decided to include times of worship and extended prayer regularly during the first Monday of the month. We felt that adding in this time would cultivate intimacy and establish a place for us to slow down and spend time with God. In November 20 (20!!!) of our young adults (and three high school students) attended the Pursuit Conference in Medicine Hat, AB for the second year in a row. We thank RLAC for helping financially support our YAs to be able to attend this conference. A week later, we celebrated two of our friends get engaged in front of our church family. God is so good! We are so grateful that we get the privilege to serve the young adults here at River and grow in our faith and understanding of the Bible. For 2019, we are currently using the inductive Bible study method to learn more about the history and storyline of the passages and ask questions during our Monday evening bible studies. The team is anticipating God working in the lives of our young adults. Pray with us to deepen our friendships with one another and activations of calling and Sola Gratia, Maxel, Sharmian, Arielle, Gino, Maeralene, and Szarina 2018 Young Adults Ministry Facilitators

Report of our Children’s Ministry Pastor Pastor Fe Vecino

I must say that 2018 has been my most difficult year in my personal life. There were so many challenges within my family life during the first half of the year, that I felt like my life was a roller coaster ride. My dad’s numerous heart surgeries from March to May, my mom’s dementia getting worst and her passing away in May, and Daryll’s surgery on his cheeks in May were just a few of all the other challenges in between. But through it all, our Father always reminded me that He is good, simply because of who He is, and not because of the season that I am. His words in Ephesians 3:16-21 have become my fortress during those difficult seasons in my life. And that is what I want to echo to you “Now glory be to God! By his mighty power at work within us, he is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope!” (Eph. 3:20) So let’s look back, declare God’s goodness and CELEBRATE… THREE SOULS ADDED TO THE KINGDOM OF GOD… Last March during our Sunday school lesson leading to our Easter story, we talked about why Jesus had to die on the cross. I ended with the message of salvation. Praise the Lord for the three young hearts that opened up to receive Jesus! WE ARE FAMILY…one of the things I encourage the children in our Kids Min to do is to pray for one another especially when there are some life events that happen among our church families. One of our boys in our Kids Min lost his mom, and so during one of our classes, we spent time praying for him and the family. Months after, while we were practicing our song for Mom’s Day, I noticed one of the girls feeling very sad and in tears – she was feeling very sad as she was sympathizing with the boy who lost his mom. In the midst of my sadness, I was also rejoicing knowing that we are not only teaching lessons but also building relationships. MANY NEW LEADERS… Last September, when we had our Fall Kick Off Weekend, several people signed up to be involved in Kids Min. Praise God for the 4 new volunteers, and for the 3 that are “coming back”. Praise God also for some of the Youth and Young Adults that expressed their desire to help when the need arises. SOME HIGLIGHTS OF THE YEAR… Kids participation in Mother’s Day, Easter and Christmas celebrations; Annual Fall Festival, Operation Christmas Child Shoe boxes. So, as we’ve looked back and celebrated God’s goodness in the lives of our children, I pray that we will be encouraged as parents, volunteers and as a church that God’s Word is alive and powerful even in the lives of the little children! May the celebrations of the past move us to… look ahead and dream BIG because our God is BIG!!! River of Life Alliance Church: thank you for the privilege of being able to serve you through our precious little children. To the Board of Elders and co-pastors, thank you for all your support and encouragement. Parents, thank you for entrusting me with your precious ones. And to my amazing team of awesome volunteers, a MILLION THANKS! You are all God’s wonderful blessings to me, as I could never do this alone. To my Lord God Almighty, may all the glory be unto YOU alone!!!

Report of our Worship Ministry Pastor Pastor Fe Vecino

!How to even begin… a lot happened in worship this year! We began 2018 with our first-ever overnight worship gathering, In His Presence in February. Seeing everyone together singing, dancing, and praying together was powerful – and what I can only imagine as a glimpse of what Heaven will be like!

In March, our Good Friday service was centered around this: We can rejoice more on Easter Sunday, when we meditate more and mourn on Good Friday. We handed out nails to represent the nailing of Jesus Throughout the year, we had many presentations, including our ever-enthusiastic KidsMin songs, a quartet for Easter, and a men’s trio serenading us with a rendition of “Isn’t She Lovely” during Mother’s/Women Appreciation Day. The next few months were focused on our ministry internally – taking time to recognize our volunteers through an Appreciation Brunch, a prayer and worship morning, and team building. Towards the end of the year, a worship admin team was formed to be able to share the workload of worship ministry This year, we also got a chance to bring back creative art back into our service by inviting one of our young adults, Leilanie Ong, to do a live painting during a worship service. We hope to include even more opportunities to incorporate creative arts in the years to come. From the band members, special presentations from all ages, and our media and sound tech team members, we are truly humbled and thankful for everyone involved in

serving through worship and making this ministry what it is! Continue to pray for the music ministry, for the rising up of leaders both in youth and adult worship teams and that in all things, we are guided by the Lord’s will. Blessings, Szarina Cabling On behalf of Pastor Fe Vecino

Report of our Volunteer Community Pastor Pastor Jack Gonzales

PSALM 113: 1 - 4

Praise the Lord!

Praise Him, you servants of the Lord; praise the name of the Lord. The Lord’s name should be praised now and forever. The Lord’s name should be praised from where the sun rises to where it sets. The Lord is supreme over all the nations; His glory reaches to the skies.

1. Bible Study a. Seniors Group

The Bible study with the seniors in our church was a great experience. They are a fun-loving group who longs for fellowship and learning God’s Word. They still thirst to be close to God. I thank Tatay Sonny Acocoro. He led some of our studies. I also thank my love Rowena, for all her help.

b. Seekers Group We studied using Rick Warren’s, “The Purpose of Driven Life”. These groups met with people who used to be live-in caregivers and term-employment BUT are now landed immigrants. I also trained a couple of people to lead Bible Studies. Thanks a lot to Rowena Gonzales, Fe and Henry Ibe, Nash and Lorna Rubiano and Magdalena Barril for their support to the group.

2. Visitation It was a privilege to visit people. Not only do I get to know them, I also developed friendship and spiritual fellowship with them. Together with stories, smiles and praying for one another, we longed and appreciated each other. Thanks to Rollie Florendo for his support when we visited people in our church.

3. Basketball Sweat to Reach out! God continued to give us strength to serve Him. People were open to hear the Good News even when “zonked” out. We just have to keep going!

4. Music Ministry It is always with outmost joy to have served and praised God with the gifts He gave us.

2018 Annual Report of the Cross-Cultural Ministries

Iris and I are very blessed to be serving as pastors at RLAC. It is always our joy to be part of the RLAC family to journey with you, as we all strive to be better followers and to be More Like Jesus. We are also very grateful to our Lord for the many opportunities to serve our Lord by visiting and ministering to our cross-cultural friends and other newcomers to Calgary and we specifically want to say Thank You for your partnership and prayers towards our ministry in Calgary. Philippians 1:4-5 (NIV) “In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now”. Of the 10 families that we are weekly walking with & visiting, here are some updates: A & D – Kurdish, Yazidi family. So, I have been helping them for over a year: visitation twice a week, ESL, and doctor appointments. “D” had a very difficult and painful pregnancy, but I waited with friends as “D” gave birth at the hospital to their daughter. We brought the family to Banff, helped them move to Calgary Housing Deer Run and for one week I helped their children with catching the school bus and making sure they were settled in their new home. Many times they mentioned we were like a brother and sister to them. N & E & 5 Children – This Oromo family moved to Calgary and for 4 months I had been helping them with everything to get established: bank accounts, government documents, cell phones, Boardwalk housing, driving to Edmonton to get their 10 pieces of luggage, schooling, health cards, AB Driving Book in Amharic, Doctor Appts, Resume & to apply at different jobs, and Other needs as they came up. Every time we went out, we prayed before leaving the parking lot and asking Jesus to bless us and Jesus did and “N” saw Jesus’ blessing on our day together. His family is watching Muslim Prayer videos on TV, but I am praying that Jesus will visit them in dreams and visions. I help disciple “M”, an Iranian university student that I have known for 5 years, who came to know Jesus.

**This year I went through a major lesson in Cross-Cultural Conflict. I needed to buy a snow blower for my Bangladeshi renter of a house I am managing and I have a close co-worker who is reaching Bangladeshis. I suggested that my friend put together the snow blower with my renter and build a stronger friendship. My renter said Emphatically “NO, I am NOT Available”. I even had to return the snow blower and have it put together and delivered. I almost lost my 25year friendship with my Bangladeshi home owner over this. A week later the renter told me that my friend was too pushy with the Gospel and he wanted nothing to do with him, but said I was different. He said “I know you love Jesus and always try to help, but we are happy being Muslims, but I want to keep my friendship with you.” I keep praying for him and his family. Other Ministries Include: Deer Run Outreach, Bannister Weekly ESL Class, and being part of the Calgary Network of Loving Muslims Together and Promoting the 30 Day Prayer Guides to 80 Churches. I have been tutoring a student twice a week since Febuary 2018 (now Life skills & Learners License).

I had the opportunity to Preach at different churches and preside at funerals.

Seminars I Attended: Leadership Matters Course, Soul Care in Airdre, Dai (Cultural) Leadership, Intercultural Competency Training course and lead an RLAC Alpha Group.

Thanks Again for all your Faithful Support, Prayers, and Encouragement Shawn Kelly

Report of our Mission Coordinator Luisa Rowena Gonzales Kings 8:60

“That all the peoples of the earth may know that the Lord is God; there is no one else.”

2018 started with a visit from the Silk Road regional director. As an after-thought the teams that went to Greece & Hanoi were gathered to debrief with these international workers (IWs). All nine young adults were in attendance and gleaned on their reflections as the IWs asked questions and shared their experiences. The event also allowed the missions committee to see how a debrief session with short term teams is conducted.

Early in the year the missions committee was busy with reviewing applications & interviewing young people from the Nextgen group to be part of the SOAR Montreal group. The comprehensive application form was compiled by the missions committee to parse through the individual’s sense of calling to partake in God’s mission for his/her life. Along with an interview the process allowed the committee to assess the individual’s need(s) to facilitate the commissioning preparation.

Six of the seven applicants along with RLAC’s youth pastor & his wife were commissioned in June for a one-week short-term experience in Canada’s least reached people groups. The missions committee developed a training program for the SOAR team. It included materials about scripture, prayer, sharing the gospel with a practicum element, team bonding, and cultural lessons. As usual, the team solicited financial support through fund raising events. This allowed them to see how God provided for them as they trusted Him in their faith journey and the church to be part of the mission trip as intercessors, givers, and senders.

The team debrief revealed the extent of how the experience contributed to their spiritual growth as individuals. Reporting to the church showed everyone the potential of RLAC’s young people to expand their reach for God’s kingdom.

In May, one of RLAC’s gentlemen was accepted with Samaritan’s Purse to be part of rebuilding homes in the hurricane devastated area of Houston, Texas. He was commissioned and supported through prayer and finances. The experience left him wanting to use his skills and work experience for God’s glory in sharing the gospel whenever the opportunity arises.

The missions committee was sad to see one of its four members move to London, Ontario in the fall. In God’s graciousness, He provided an elder, small group leader, and our youth pastor’s wife become new members of the team.

One of RLAC’s young adults pursued her call to attend YWAM’s Discipleship Training School (DTS) in Medicine Hat, Alberta in the fall and eventually to the Philippines as part of the internship component. She spent five months away from home to be honed by God.

At the end of the year seven young adults attended URBANA 18 in St. Louis, Missouri. This campus ministry focused conference only occurs every three years. The team worked hard to raise funds for the one-week event. Debriefing with this group after they presented during weekend services showed their excitement and lessons learned from that experience. Two of them signed to commit in going for a short to mid-term missions. Another two emphasized their desire to be more involved in prayer ministry. The others discovered more about themselves as they discerned what God has in store for them. It was encouraging to hear them talk about their growing hunger to study the Bible inductively.

Lastly, the funds raised for an RLAC member to join a CMA group in northern Iraq to minister to Yazidis that did not materialize, was requested to be donated towards the work being initiated in that region.

Respectfully Submitted,

Praise our Heavenly Father, our Lord Jesus and Holy Spirit! May God’s faithfulness toward you goes on forever as we celebrate all of God’s goodness in 2018!

I personally thank our Pastoral staff, Board of Elders, Cell group leaders, Prayer Group leaders and the Intercessory team for your support and encouragement. Your prayers and intercession serve the Lord’s church and people – those who attend our weekend services, those who supported and benefited from our church initiatives and reached out to us with their prayer requests. I know that without you, our ministry would not be complete.

I am grateful for your partnership and service in prayer and rejoicing for the following initiatives completed in 2018.

Lastly, allow me thank the River of Life Alliance Church for giving me the privilege to serve God through the one form of worship that’s precious to me – prayer. I thank my best prayer partner and ever supportive husband Nilo for serving God and his prayer ministry. To the Prayer Committee Team who help me do this ministry, A Million Thanks! You are all supportive and encouraging to me, as I could never do this ministry alone. I will be forever grateful to all of you!

To our Heavenly Father: I will give thanks to you, LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.

2018 SPENDING SUMMARY

CHURCH BUILDING MORTGAGE

For the year 2018 surplus realized, we were able to generate a cash inflow of $81,958 (see Statement of Cash Flow) that enabled us to pay-off $78,574 of our mortgage principal.

CONCLUSION

While increase in 2018 giving was not significant, spending was well managed in line with contributions. We continue to praise God for the generosity seen throughout the year. We pray that we continue to depend on God to meet our needs in the years to come.

In closing, I want to thank our Bookkeeper, the Counters and the Ushers, who have been of great assistance in allowing me to perform the treasurer’s role. Our thanks also go to all Church members and adherents for the generosity shown during the year.
