Vaishampayan, Vice Chancellor, CSJM University, Kanpur. During the refresher course, twenty one lectures on various topics e.g. Overall International and National Sugar Scenario, Advantages of Multiple Effect Evaporator for Concentrating Spent Wash, Techniques of Reducing Sugar Loss, Bagasse Drying (a new trend of fuel saving), Slop Fired Boiler (the latest technique of zero discharge), Modern Methods of Energy Saving in Sugar Industry, Methods of Saving of Electrical Power, Treatment of Feed Water for High Pressure Boiler, Alternate Raw Material for Ethanol Production etc. were delivered by the faculty members of institute as well as by the eminent technologists, engineers & other experts from the sugar industry and other organizations. Large no. of participants from Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Haryana attended the refresher course.

Refresher Course:-
To enhance & refresh the knowledge of the
in service technologists and Engineers of the
sugar factory, five days Refresher Course was
organized at the Institute from 7th – 11th July,
2014 which was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. J.V.

Scientific Society Inaugural Function –
The inaugural function of the Scientific Society
under the Council of Student’s Activities was
organized on 03rd September 2014 at National
Sugar Institute, Kanpur.
The function was inaugurated by Dr. N. P. Singh,
Director, Indian Institute of Pulses Research,
Kanpur. In his address, Dr. Singh called upon the
students to study the technology available in
other food processing industries so as to
facilitate possible transfer of technology for
overall development of sugar industry. A poster
& debate competition on the topics “Co-
generation in Sugar Factories” & “Ethanol
Production as future fuel” was also organized
and the participating students were awarded.
Seminars Organized:-
1. The institute organized an All India Seminar
on “Diminishing Productivity of Sugarcane
and Sugar recovery in Northern India –
Reasons & Opportunities” jointly with The
Sugar Technologists’ Association of India at
Lucknow on 18th July 2014.
Large no. of delegates from U.P.,
Uttrakhand, Bihar & Haryana attended the
same to discuss reasons for continuous
lower productivity of sugarcane & sugar in
sub tropic region & to draw action plan for
improvement.
2. An All India Seminar on “Process Options to
Produce Sugar for Domestic and Global
Requirements” was jointly organized by
National Sugar Institute, Kanpur, S.
Nijalingappa Sugar Institute, Belgaum and
Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvarya Sugarcane
Research Institute, Mandya on 08th August
2014 at Mysore, Karnataka, Delegates from
various sugar factories from the state and
other parts of the country attended the
seminar and seven technical papers were
presented.

Seminars/Convention attended:-
1. Director and Shri D. Swain, Professor of
Sugar Engineering attended the 44th
Annual Convention of SISSTA at Vizag,
Andhra Pradesh on 25th & 26th July, 2014.
Addressing the delegates, Shri Narendra
Mohan Called upon the delegates to take
a pledge for undertaking water
conservation in their factories so as to
minimize fresh consumption.
2. Director attended a programme on
“Biofortification of Food Crops”, as Guest
of Honour on 04th August, 2014 at Indian
Institute of Pulses Research, Kanpur.
3. Shri Narendra Mohan, Director, Shri Doctor
Swain, Prof. Sugar Engineering, Shri M. K.
Banerjee, Sr. Instrumentation Engg. and Dr.
P.K. Jain, Physical Chemist attended 73rd
Annual Convention of STAI at Bengaluru
from 9th to 11th September, 2014. Shri
Narendra Mohan, Director delivered the
Gundu Rao Memorial Lecture on “Sugar
Industry in India-Roadmap for Sustainable
Profitability” at 73rd Annual Convention of
STAI at Bengaluru. Shri M.K. Banerjee, Sr.
Instrumentation Engineer also presented a
paper during the convention.
Extension Lecture:
Eminent Experts from the sugar industry
delivered lectures on various important topics
for the benefit of the students as well as faculty:
I. “Raw Sugar Production – Indian
Perspective” by Shri K. Jagdeesh, J.P.
Mukherjee & Associates, Pune.
II. “Design & Operation of Evaporators” by
Shri S. K. Bhojraj, Sucrotech Equipments
Pvt. Ltd., Pune.
III. Shri A. K. Pandey, General Manager,
Sugar Corporation of Uganda delivered a
lecture on “Practical Hints for Achieving
High Efficiency in Sugar Processing” at
the institute. He described the working
of sugar factories in Uganda and about
the type of sugar produced there,
particularly, keeping in view the
demand-supply position in that country.

Iv. Shri S. K. Gupta, Ex Director, National
Sugar Institute delivered a lecture on
“Recent Advancements in Process
House for Energy Conservation in Sugar
Factories”. He described the various
energy efficient devices and
configuration to save energy thus to
boost up power exports.
v. Shri Narendra Mohan, Director
delivered a lecture on “Various Aspects
for Sustainable Profitability of Sugar
Units” for final year Sugar Tech. & Sugar
Engg. students.
Video Conferencing:-
Institute participated in the video conferencing
programme on 05th August 2014 through which
Hon’ble President of India addressed the staff
and students of various Universities and
technical institutions. The Hon’ble President of
India addressed on the issue of “Democracy”
and “Governance”.

Award:-
Research paper entitled “Treatment of Raw
Distillery Effluent by Double Compartment
Electrolytic Cell using KCL as Reference
Electrolyte” under Environment and Co-product
Section presented by Dr. P.K. Jain et al during
72nd Annual Convention of STAI at Lucknow was
conferred with prestigious Noel Deer Gold
Medal Award for the year 2013-14.
The award was received by Dr. P.K. Jain, Physical
Chemist during the 73rd Annual Convention of
STAI.

Orientation Programme:-
Institute arranged an Orientation Programme
for the fresh batch students admitted during the
academic session 2014-15 in various courses
conducted by the institute.
Shri Narendra Mohan, Director addressed the
students and stressed upon the need for
maintaining discipline in all spheres of life. He
advised the students to be more interactive with
their teachers for rooting out their problems in
studies and otherwise. Shri J. P. Shrivastava,
Education In charge and other senior faculty
members also addressed the students. The
senior and fresh batch students also expressed
their views on this occasion.
Independence Day Celebrated:-
Institute celebrated 68th INDEPENDENCE DAY on
15th August, 2014.
On this occasion, Shri Narendra Mohan, Director
hoisted the National Flag and called upon the
staff and students of the institute to work hard
with positive attitude, so that, the institute may
achieve greater heights. He further emphasized
upon improvement in teaching/training to the
students and technical services being extended
to the sugar and allied industry.

Army Seeks Technical Support:-
Major General M. P. Singh, Additional Director
General-Supplies & Transport, Army HQ-New
Delhi along with his team visited the institute on
8th July 2014 to seek institute help in testing
quality of procured sugar & also for setting up
laboratory in future.
Visitors from Abroad:-
A three members delegation from Iran led by
Mr. Valiollah Taghipur, Industrial Research
Deputy Manager, visited the institute on 19th &
20th August, 2014 to seek first hand information
about the teaching/training programmes and
consultancy activities of the institute.
