RECAP: The Rainiers rallied for 3 runs in the top of the 9th inning, but it wasn’t enough as Tacoma fell to Salt Lake 8-7 on Thursday night. 3B Gordon Beckham (3x5, 2 R, 2 2 B, 2 RBI) led the team with 3 hits, while CF Ben Gamel (2x5, 2 R, 2B), C David Freitas (2x4, 2B, RBI, BB), RF Andrew Aplin (2x4, 2B, BB), DH Cameron Perkins (2x5, R, 2B) and SS Zach Vincej (2x4, 2 R) each recorded 2 of the Rainiers 15 hits. Starter Bryan Evans (2.2,7,5,3,1,3) fell to 4-2 with Tacoma after recording the loss, allowing 5 runs (3 ER) on 7 hits over 2.2 innings. ON THE MEND: Erasmo Ramírez began his rehab assignment with Tacoma on July 20, transferred to Arkansas on July 31 and transferred back to Tacoma on Aug. 5. In 4 combined rehab starts with AAA Tacoma and AA Arkansas he has combined to go 0-1 with a 2.77 ERA (4 ER, 13.0 IP): July 20 vs. Salt Lake (2.0,0,0,0,0,3), July 25 at Round Rock (3.0,1,0,0,0,3), July 31 vs. NW Arkansas (4.0,4,2,1,0,6) and Aug. 5 vs. Colorado (4.0,6,4,3,2,4,HB). Ramírez has been on the 10-day disabled list since May 1 with a right Teres Major strain. Prior to his most recent DL stint this season, he made 2 starts with the Mariners, going 0-2 with a 10.24 ERA (11 ER, 9.2 IP). Ramírez opened the season on the 10-day disabled list with a right shoulder-latissimus dorsi strain on March 28 (retroactive to March 26). He combined to make 3 starts on a rehab assignment with high-A Modesto (1 start) and AAA Tacoma (2 starts), April 7-17, posting a record of 0-1 with a 2.13 ERA (3 ER, 12.2 IP) with 10 strikeouts and a 2 walks. Ramírez split the 2017 season between Tampa Bay and Seattle, combining for a record of 5-6 with a 4.39 ERA (64 ER, 131.1 IP) with 109 strikeouts and 31 walks in 37 games (19 starts). He was acquired by the Mariners from the Rays in exchange for RHP Steve Cishek on July 28, 2017. In 7 Major League seasons with Seattle (2012-14, ’17-c) and Tampa Bay (2015-17), he is 30-37 with 3 saves and a 4.29 ERA (287 ER, 601.2 IP) with 469 strikeouts and 170 walks in 184 games (84 starts). Ramírez was traded by Seattle to Tampa Bay on March 31, 2015 in exchange for LHP Mike Montgomery. The native of Rivas, Nicaragua, was signed by Seattle in 2007 and made his Major League debut with the Mariners in 2012. REHAB ASSIGNMENT: LHP Roenis Elías began his rehab assignment with AAA Tacoma on Aug. 9. He struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 6th inning on Aug. 9 at Salt Lake. Prior to his stint on the DL, he went 2-0 with a 2.88 ERA (8 ER, 25.0 IP) with 18 strikeouts and 8 walks in 13 games, including 1 start, with the Mariners after being recalled from AAA Tacoma on June 1. Elias made a spot start against San Francisco on July 24, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5 in 3.2 innings pitched. He has worked at least 2.0 innings in 6 of his 12 relief appearances and has held opponents scoreless in 7 of 12 games out of the bullpen. Elías earned the win in his 2018 Mariners debut, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings in the Mariners 4-3, 13-inning win on June 1 vs. Tampa Bay. Elías was acquired by the Mariners from Boston in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations on April 23. After reporting to AAA Tacoma, he went 2-4 with a 4.94 ERA (17 ER, 31.0 IP) with 27 strikeouts and 12 walks in 7 games (6 starts). Prior to being acquired by Seattle, he was 1-0 with 1 save and a 1.23 ERA (1 ER, 7.1 IP) with 9 strikeouts and 2 walks in 4 games with AAA Pawtucket (Boston). The lefty was originally signed by Seattle as a minor league free agent on May 3, 2011 and made his Major League debut with the Mariners on April 3, 2014 at Oakland. Elías was acquired by the Red Sox from the Mariners on Dec. 7, 2015 along with RHP Carson Smith in exchange for LHP Wade Miley and RHP Jonathan Aro. In parts of 4 Major League seasons with the Mariners (2014-15, 2018-c) and Red Sox (2016-17), he is 17-21 with a 4.10 ERA (142 ER, 312.0 IP) with 262 strikeouts and 122 walks in 68 career games (51 starts).

PLAYER OF THE MONTH: Arkansas Travelers center fielder Braden Bishop was named Texas League Player of the Month for June it was announced by Minor League Baseball. Bishop hit .379 (39x103) with 24 runs scored, 8 doubles, 3 home runs, 12 RBI, 2 HBP, 10 walks and 1 stolen baes in 24 games. He led the Texas League in average (.379), runs (24), hits (39), total bases (56), and on-base percentage (.443). Bishop finished 2ndnd in doubles (8) and OPS (.987) and 3rd in extra-base hits (11). For the season, Bishop is batting .289 (95x329) with 67 runs scored, 20 doubles, 7 home runs, 31 RBI, 3 HBP, 36 walks and 4 stolen bases in 79 games. Since May 5 he has raised his season average from a season-low .154 averge to his current .289 average. Bishop was voted as a Texas League midseason All-Star and was the starting centerfielder for the North Division as well as being named a league player of the week earlier this season. Off the field, he is renowned for creating and promoting the 4Mom charity to raise money and awareness for Alzheimer’s Disease after his mother’s diagnosis in 2014. He was the fifth round selection of the Mariners in 2015 out of the University of Washington. Bishop, 24, was selected by Seattle in the third round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Washington. PDC EXTRENSION: The Seattle Mariners announced the extension of the Player Development Contract with the Arkansas Travelers, the Mariners Double-A affiliate in the Texas League. The Player Development Contract, which would have run out at the end of this season, has been extended to cover the 2019-2020 seasons. The Travelers won the Texas League North First Half Division title and join the Everett AquaSox on being the first two Mariners affiliates to claim a postseason berth in 2018. As the first half North Division champions, the Travs will host the opening two games of the division series at Dickey-Stephens Park on Wednesday, September 5 and Thursday, September 6. The opponent will be the second half champion or the team in the division with the next best overall record. The Travelers have been affiliated with the Seattle Mariners for the past 2 seasons, becoming the Mariners affiliate in the Texas League on September 20, 2016. The 2018 season marked the Travelers 53rd consecutive season in the Texas League, the longest continuously running club in the league.

Canó, 35, has been out of the lineup since being placed on the disabled list on May 14 after sustaining a fractured fifth metacarpal on his right hand after being hit by a pitch in the 3rd on May 13 at Detroit. He was suspended on May 15 by Major League Baseball for 80 games for violation of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Prior to his injury, Canó appeared in 39 games with the Mariners this season, batting .287 (41x143) with 24 runs, 10 doubles, 4 home runs, 23 RBI, 21 walks, a .385 on-base percentage and a .441 slugging mark (.825 OPS). At the time of his injury, he was among American League leaders in walks (T13th) and on-base percentage (14th). Since making his Major League debut on May 3, 2005, he has appeared in 2,037 games, the 2nd-most of any player in that span.
